Woman Fooled a Scammer by Thanking Him for Saving Her From His Own Fake Crime

Scammers often depend on fear and panic to make people act quickly. When a person refuses to play along and stays calm, the entire script can fall apart because the scammer no longer controls the conversation.

The original poster (OP) shared a clever interaction with a phone scammer pretending to be a border control agent. Instead of becoming frightened after hearing claims about illegal drugs and possible jail time, OP responded with unexpected gratitude, repeatedly thanking the caller for supposedly protecting them.

The scammer struggled to continue the usual intimidation tactics because OP refused to react the way they expected. Scroll down to see how this simple response completely confused the would-be scammer.

'Foiled a scammer with 2 words he never expected!'

As an older woman, I am sometimes targeted by phone scammers.

Here’s how I handled the latest call from one of these crooks, who I’ll call WBS for Would Be Scammer.

I changed his name because I don’t remember it. WBS, in a gruff, authoritative voice: Is this LeadingKnowllesge712?

Me: Speaking. (I never say yes to any question from an unfamiliar caller so it can’t be used to claim I’ve consented to anything.)

WBS: This is Agent Jack Smith from Border Control, badge number 9570. We’ve intercepted a large shipment of illegal drugs from Mexico addressed to you!

Me: Thank you for doing that!. WBS, sounding a bit startled. You could go to jail because of this highly illegal shipment!

Me: But now I don’t have to worry it because you’ve intercepted it. Thank you!

WBS, after a pause to regroup. Don’t you understand? You’re in big trouble and facing a $5,000 fine that must be paid immediately!

These are very dangerous drugs!

Me: Wow, you’re doing a great job protecting me from dangerous d__g criminals by catching this smuggler before that happened!

Thank you for your service!

WBS, sputtering a bit. But, but, the fine is $5,000 and you need to pay now or you could go to jail!

Me, feigning confusion. That sounds terrible and I’m so glad you stopped this shipment and kept me safe!

Thanks again for protecting me and our border with your diligent enforcement.

I appreciate you and hope you put this dangerous criminal in jail!. WBS. But, but…. At this point, I said thank you again and hung.

Many people know the uneasy feeling of receiving an unexpected phone call that immediately creates fear. Scammers often do not rely on facts; they rely on emotions.

They create panic, urgency, and confusion because frightened people are more likely to react quickly instead of thinking carefully. Staying calm in those moments can be one of the strongest defenses a person has.

In this situation, the OP did something that completely disrupted the scammer’s strategy. Instead of becoming frightened by accusations about illegal activity, jail, or financial punishment, she responded with appreciation and confusion.

Her repeated “thank you” removed the emotional reaction the scammer was trying to create. He expected fear, denial, and desperation. Instead, he received cooperation that made his own story collapse.

The interesting psychological aspect is that the OP did not fight the scammer directly. Many people believe the best response to manipulation is confrontation, but sometimes refusing to follow the emotional script is more effective. The scammer wanted to place himself in a position of authority and make the OP feel powerless.

By acting as if he had already solved the problem, she quietly changed the power dynamic. Suddenly, the person trying to create panic was forced to explain why his “successful investigation” still required money.

A different perspective is that the OP’s approach worked because she understood something important about manipulation: scammers need their victims to participate emotionally. They create a problem, then present themselves as the only solution.

When someone refuses to enter that cycle, the entire scheme becomes harder to maintain. Her humor and calm attitude were not just entertaining; they were a way of protecting herself from psychological pressure.

Experts who study scams and persuasion explain that fraudsters commonly use urgency and fear to weaken decision-making.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman, whose research explored how people make decisions under stress, showed that emotional situations can influence judgment and cause people to rely on quick reactions instead of careful reasoning. His work highlights why slowing down and creating mental distance can help people make better decisions.

This explains why the OP’s response was so effective. She did not allow the scammer to control the emotional environment of the conversation. By staying calm, asking no personal questions, and refusing to accept the false emergency, she protected herself from the pressure tactics being used against her.

The larger lesson is that confidence and patience are powerful tools against manipulation. Scammers often sound convincing because they create chaos quickly.

The safest response is usually the opposite: slow down, verify information independently, and never allow a stranger to rush you into a decision. Sometimes the strongest way to handle a threat is simply refusing to react the way the person behind it expects.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters shared funny ways to waste scammers’ time with jokes and fake cooperation

Threadstitchn − I usually adopt their exact tone/voice "corny cop voice" and try to sell them Union memberships.

I usually get calls from "the police union fund" I tell them I'll donate if they donate to the United fire fighting fund I can take a credit card

your_moms_apron − You need to check out James Veitch.

He’s a comedian that has a series called “scamalot” where he enjoys wasting the time of various scammers. Hysterical stuff.

Bob_12_Pack − "You got the decoy shipment, I'm all good here man"

These Redditors described confidently challenging scammers and making them reveal their lies

eatingganesha − I got one of those calls and this is what I said: “other than this intercepted package, what evidence do you have against me beyond this package?

addresses and owner’s names are public info available on my city’s property search website - so anyone could send a package under my name to my home.

[‘but Ma’am but… ‘ I kept interrupting him lol] Surely you would have run a background check on me and found that I am a law abiding citizen.

So why didn’t you let the package be delivered and then watch to see who picked it up?

As we all learned in training, that is all basic knowledge and investigatory procedure.

So please explain to me why you didn’t follow procedure while I text my sergeant. What is your name and badge number? .” He hung up. lol

IllDoItNowInAMinute_ − My go to is "wait, lemme get my dad for you. He's a detective army vet who works in cyber crimes! !" they hang up so quickly 😂

JudgeAffectionate841 − I worked in JAG as a tax preparer back in 2005. I got a scam call from the IRS saying I owed thousands.

I replied, "Funny, I work for the IRS and didn't see this in my file. " They hung up on me immediately.

These commenters joked about scammers being confused when their tricks failed

JanSmiddy − Option B: just send me the drugs thanks

Rude-Manufacturer635 − “Why didn’t my false sense of urgency trip her up? I could have sworn older people fell for this stuff! ”

These users focused on preventing scam calls through phone settings and safe communication habits

possumhicks − My phone is on Anonymous Call R__ection and sends all calls from #’s not in my address book to VM.

If a caller doesn’t leave a message they are immediately blocked.

I only take off Anonymous Call R__ection on days I’m expecting return calls from #’s possibly not in my address book.

Good job with the scammer but my phone rejects a minimum of 5-10 scam calls a day and I don’t have the desire or patience to deal with the scammers.

OddRevolution7888 − Well done! And smart for not saying "Yes" if you don't know the caller. I do the same thing.

Have you ever received a strange scam call? Would you hang up immediately, or could you keep your cool like this woman? Share your experiences below!
