in Social Issues

Birthdays are supposed to be moments when people feel loved, appreciated, and remembered by the person closest to them.

But sometimes, a single disappointing day can reveal much deeper problems that have been hiding beneath the surface for a long time.

The original poster (OP) thought she was dealing with a careless husband who ruined her birthday because of a hangover.

However, as she looked back at their relationship, she started noticing more warning signs that made her question everything.

From feeling unsupported to uncovering painful secrets, she realized the issue was much bigger than one forgotten celebration.

Keep reading to see what happened after OP decided to take a closer look at her marriage.

'WIBTAH for divorcing my husband of 1 year over a hangover?'

Alright folks. This is my first time posting on Reddit! I’m (f28) and my husband

(m36) have been together for over a year. Me and him have had a okay

relationship but I feel like I have ignored too many red flags. Okay, I’m gonna

back up a bit. We had a beautiful wedding with 50 guests, although most of

them were invited by him. About 15 were my friends and family. Looking back I

realize that that is strange but I’m not here to talk about that.

Just a few days ago was my 28th birthday. My husband made no effort what

so ever to make any plans, get a gift, or even lift a finger. In fact, the night

before he had lied to me saying he was out to dinner with some co workers to

discuss plans but he came home WASTED. I mean WASTED!! I’m used to this so

I didn’t think much of it. I now realize that is strange as well… anyways. He was

so hungover the day of my birthday that I had to stay home caring for him. ON

MY BIRTHDAY. The day after my birthday I woke up to my husband angry at me

for thinking my birthday was on my birthday? Okay, let me elaborate. I woke

up to a stern face in our kitchen telling me that it was my birthday on the day

after my birthday? I’m sorry this doesn’t make any sense. But I don’t know how

to say it in a way that makes sense. I think he was manipulating me into

thinking my birthday was a day later because he felt guilty for being hungover

for my real birthday? I have been assessing things, I own the house, all of our

assets, not our dog though. But I did pay for his car, designer watch, and

designer clothing. I feel bad about taking that away from him because it

wasn’t his fault. So, Reddit. WIBTAH for divorcing my husband over a hangover

Or should I calm down and let it go?. update:

Okay. I’m back! I know it’s only a day later but this morning I was reading some

of y’all’s comments and thank you so much for helping me see the gaslighting

and manipulation. I am confused why he came back drunk though.. I might

choose to be petty and try to get him to confess. (I have girl senses that he

was cheating but I don’t know.)

I am deciding that I will divorce him because I realize this was not about a

hangover. I am going to contact a lawyer soon to decide what to do with the

things I got for him, our house and assets. I will try for our dog but I assume

that will be messy. (I don’t know why this is relevent but our dogs name is

Annabel!!!). I will update soon!!. update:

hello! Last night I talked with my husband about this incident and he

gaslighted the a__hole out of me. No literally. lol. Anyway I am out of this

relationshit. (Yes I spelled that correctly) I am going to sell his expensive items

before we get divorced, they are under my name so I am legally allowed to sell

them. I am going to convince my husband to put Annabel under my name. I

think he will comply as he is sorta lazy.

Also, he is cheating. I am so hurt by all of these things combined that I don’t

even feel it. I logged onto his phone last night and saw a missing time stamp.

To my friend. I think I just sat there for 5 minutes staring. Am I overreacting?

I’m gonna play the long game. I set his phone screen to a missed time stamp

and act the same. I’m going to continue on doing that. I need some time.. bye, I

will update soon.. update:. continuing the long game is getting fun. It’s clear

he feels no regret for cheating nor missing my birthday.

Here is a little context I forgot to add: in my culture birthdays are very

important events that have fun celebrations that last through the whole day.

He knew that yet chose to get so extremely drunk the night before he was

hungover for the intire day. That almost upsets me more than the cheating.

The items I put up for sale were sold and I sent them, I got the money and I am

going to ‘buy’ the dog off my ex. (I’m going to refer to my husband as my ex

even before the divorce papers are fully set.) I also saw a comment that was

something along the lines of “I think I know who payed for the wedding” I

think you do too. This girl (me). I am getting my lawyers help with the divorce

papers, nothing is final yet though. I will continue to update but I might not do

it as frequently.. bye!. Update:

I don’t know how but after I dangled money in front of his face he changed the

name on an Annabel to mine soo 🤷 (how did he do it this quickly??? Did he actually change it??). bye!

Many people reach a moment in a relationship where they ask themselves, “Am I leaving because of this one thing, or because of everything that came before it?”

A single disappointment may seem small from the outside, but when it represents years of feeling unseen, unappreciated, or taken for granted, the emotional impact can be much deeper.

In OP’s situation, the birthday incident was not simply about a forgotten gift or a bad night of drinking.

The hurt came from what the moment represented.

She expected basic care and consideration from her husband, especially on a day that held cultural and personal importance to her.

Instead, she found herself taking care of him while he avoided responsibility and later appeared to rewrite what happened.

The confusion was not only about the birthday; it was about whether she could trust her own perception of her marriage.

A different way to look at OP’s reaction is that she was not suddenly ending a marriage over a hangover.

She was responding to a collection of unmet needs.

Relationships are often damaged less by one major mistake and more by repeated patterns: lack of effort, unequal investment, dishonesty, and one partner feeling like they are carrying the emotional responsibility alone.

The financial details also reveal another important dynamic. OP described owning the home, paying for many expensive items, and handling much of the responsibility in the relationship.

While money alone does not determine the value of a marriage, a relationship can become unhealthy when one person consistently gives more while receiving little emotional support in return.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s pain appears larger than the birthday itself.

A missed celebration can be repaired when both people acknowledge the hurt and make an effort to rebuild connection.

However, when someone feels dismissed or manipulated after expressing pain, the injury becomes less about the original event and more about the lack of emotional safety afterward.

At the same time, major relationship decisions are best made with a clear mind rather than only during moments of anger or shock.

Seeking legal advice, emotional support, and time to process the situation can help someone make choices based on their long-term wellbeing rather than immediate pain.

OP’s story reflects a difficult but common realization: sometimes people are not grieving the loss of the relationship they had, but the relationship they hoped they had.

A healthy partnership should not require someone to repeatedly convince their partner that their feelings matter.

Love needs effort, honesty, and mutual care, not one person constantly carrying the weight for two.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters believed OP’s husband showed a lack of love, respect, and effort, questioning why OP stayed in such an unhappy marriage

bookworm-1960 − NTA It doesn't sound like he loves you, likes you, or respects

you. I wonder who paid for the wedding? It also sounds like he married you for

your money. Kick him to the curb. I hope you have your assets protected so he

can't take you to the cleaners in the divorce. Edit for typos

NextAffect8373 − He sounds worthless

PainterChick69 − Why are you with this man? You described your relationship

as “Ok” and you’ve only been married a year. That is a dry white toast, vanilla,

lukewarm description when you’re still technically newlyweds. Get over feeling

bad about the stuff. He’s a grown man. He can get his own stuff.

This group argued the birthday issue was not just about one mistake but a pattern of lying, selfishness, neglect, and prioritizing himself over OP

CADreamn − "I feel bad about taking that away from him because it wasn’t his

fault. " What wasn't his fault? Him lying about what day your birthday is on,

when he knew full well what day it is but decided to get hammered with his

friends instead of planning anything for you?

Him being so hungover that he couldn't do anything, even if he actually had

planned anything?   It was all his fault. He's an a__oholic and a neglectful

husband. Please he's gaslighting you. And lying. And prioritizing literally

everything except for you. And a leech.   Please realize you deserve more from life than this guy.

Even if that means you'll be alone, that's still more than you are getting with him.

Ginger630 − NTA! What wasn’t his fault? Him drinking so much he was

hungover? Him lying? Him forgetting your birthday? Be done with this AH

before you have kids. You should have never stayed to care for him. You

should have made plans and left. Take the designer stuff you gave him and sell

it. It’s still marital property. You can do what you want with it.

Give yourself a belated birthday gift: a divorce. Get a good lawyer.

ErisianSaint − NTA. Look, the guy tried to gaslight you about your own

birthday. And odds are good he was cheating on you. Even if he wasn't, he was

SUPER wasted and then had you taking care of him on your birthday. This is

what your life is going to look like for the future. You're not divorcing him over a hangover.

You're divorcing him because he's incurably selfish.

These users advised OP to protect herself financially and understand potential divorce complications before making decisions

Legendary_maestro − Why are you feeling bad for him taking stuff away ?

while he clearly do not give a damn about you ? what are getting from this

relationship And I am sorry but I feel the age gap is a major issue , 8 years is a

lot taking into consideration his behavior

apothekryptic − Together for over a year? You're just getting to know each

other. You don't even have more than 1 previous birthday together to

compare. Your husband sounds s__tty and frankly, if you feel like you want a

divorce, YWNBTAfor that. You get to feel how you feel and want what you

want and make whatever choices are best for you.

Where you lost me was your ideas about division of assets in a potential

divorce. Good chance that if you're legally married, it doesn't mean who's

name is on what or who bought what for the other, he's still going to be

entitled to a share unless you have a prenup.

If you think he's an a__hole now, things are going to get way worse in a

divorce. That is not a reason to not divorce him if you want to, though. So genuinely, best of luck to you.

This group supported OP leaving the relationship, suggesting the husband’s actions showed he was not worth continuing to fight for

chez2202 − Your husband has two options right now. He can either STFU,

check the date on his phone and admit that he made a mistake or he can admit

that he got so wasted the night before your birthday that he lost an entire

day. And a wife. Before you divorce him you should sell the designer watch and buy yourself a nice birthday present.

Then sell the car YOU own. Then present him with divorce papers. If his

birthday is coming up in the next month or so, you should have them served

THE DAY AFTER and tell him that it’s his birthday THAT DAY and you wanted to give him an extra special gift.

And buy him a bike to go with the papers so that he still has transportation.

Puzzleheaded_Win9400 − NTA, trade him his watch/clothing/car for the dog

and everything else and let him go be someone else’s burden.

OP went into her birthday hoping for a celebration but ended up facing something much bigger than a missed gift or a bad night out.

The forgotten plans, the suspicious behavior, the cheating, and the feeling of carrying the relationship financially all revealed a pattern she could no longer ignore.

What started as one disappointing birthday became the moment she finally chose herself and her future.

Do you think OP was right to walk away, or did she move too quickly after the betrayal?

How would you handle a partner who only changes when there’s something to lose? Share your thoughts below!
