Woman Stops Cooking After Boyfriend Demands Dinner for His Friends, Then Walks Out After One Comment

Moving in together is often when couples discover how they truly handle responsibilities, stress, and everyday life.

Sometimes, small disagreements reveal bigger problems that were easier to ignore while living separately.

What looks like a simple argument about dinner can actually expose deeper issues about respect and expectations.

The original poster (OP) thought she was building a life with someone who once went out of his way to care for her.

But after moving in together, she found herself carrying most of the financial and household responsibilities while her boyfriend’s behavior started changing.

One exhausting day finally pushed her past her limit when a simple request turned into a much bigger confrontation.

Scroll down to see why OP decided she needed some space.

'AITA For handing my Boyfriend a can of ravioli instead of cooking for him?'

So throw away account because he is obsessed with Reddit. My (36 F )

boyfriend (38 M) is mad at me because instead of cooking him dinner I gave

him a can of ravioli from the pantry and told him “eat up”. So for context we

have just recently moved in together. We met 2 years ago at the aquarium and

hit it off but didn’t start dating until a year ago. He works part time at the local

grocery store because he says his back hurts too much for a full time job after

a car accident as a teen. I work from home and have a well paying job in

insurance so I pay for most of the bills and will typically handle the cleaning he

can’t do ( dishes, laundry, sweeping, moping, vacuuming ). I also as of the last

two months am the ONLY one that cooks.

After an extra rough day where I ended up staying late at work to finish up a

proposal for an attorney I left my office in the spare bedroom of our

apartment and found my boyfriend sitting on the couch with two of his friends

and beer cans already stacked up on the coffee table in front of them as they

played on my ps5. Without even looking up as I came into the room he asked

me when dinner would be ready and said to make enough the guys can eat too.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. A few weeks ago we had a meeting

run long at work and I ended up working a 12 hour shift while he sat on the

couch in the other room watching tv and as soon as I came out of the office he told me go fix his dinner.

I am having trouble believing this is the same man I met in the aquarium two

years ago because he used to be so nice and would go out of his way to help

me on rough days even driving across town to bring me dinner from my

favorite restaurant one day he knew I had a hard day.

Now I know I can have a temper sometimes and when I’m stressed the last

thing I want to do is entertain his friends and go cook a full meal. Admittedly I

did let my temper get the better of me and instead of asking if they could just

order pizza or something I instead asked “ Are you f\*\^cking kidding me? Go

make your own dinner. “ this started an argument with my boyfriend who said

it was “ the woman’s job” to do the cooking. We exchanged a few more words

while his friends just sat there watching us argue. I finally went to the kitchen

just to get away from him. When looking in the pantry I saw we still had the

can of ravioli my nephew loves from when he stayed over a few weeks ago so I

grabbed in and walked back to the living room where he and his friends were

still talking and heard one of them tell him he needs to “ get her in check”. I

couldn’t even speak right then I was so mad I just dropped the can in his lap.

When he looked at me and asked “ what the hell “ I just glared at him and said

“it’s dinner. Eat up” then stormed off to the bedroom and slammed the door.

After a few minutes to get my thoughts together I packed a duffle bag then

went to the spare room and gathered my laptop and equipment I could pack in

the computer bag before heading for the door.

I am currently staying with my parents but he has been blowing up my phone

about how childish I am for leaving and how I embarrassed him. His friends and

sister have even been texting telling me to grow up. Now I’m starting to think I

let my temper get the better of me and mess everything up. So AITA for not

cooking dinner and losing my temper?

Sometimes the most painful moments in a relationship are not caused by one argument, but by the sudden realization that the person you trusted may no longer be treating you like an equal.

A request for dinner might seem small on its own, but when it comes after months of carrying the household responsibilities alone, it can become a symbol of something much bigger.

In OP’s situation, the conflict was not really about a can of ravioli. It was about feeling taken for granted.

She was working long hours, paying most of the bills, managing household tasks, and still being expected to serve as the default caregiver when her partner wanted comfort.

The emotional shock came from the contrast between the man she remembered, someone who once showed care and effort and the person sitting on the couch expecting her to cook for him and his friends after a difficult workday.

What makes this situation complicated is that both people reacted emotionally.

OP admits she lost her temper and chose a sarcastic response instead of calmly explaining how hurt she felt.

However, the larger issue was not the delivery of her frustration.

It was the mindset behind her boyfriend’s expectation that cooking was automatically her responsibility because she was a woman.

Relationships often go through a difficult transition when couples move in together.

Before sharing a home, people can maintain their best behaviors because there is more distance and fewer daily responsibilities.

Living together reveals how each person views teamwork, effort, and respect.

A partner who was once thoughtful may unintentionally reveal beliefs about roles and entitlement once routines become established.

This perspective helps explain why OP reached a breaking point. A single request for dinner would not normally destroy a relationship.

The deeper wound came from repeated experiences where her efforts were treated as expected rather than appreciated.

Having his friends present also added another layer, because hearing someone suggest he needed to “get her in check” transformed a private disagreement into a question of respect and control.

That said, the healthiest next step is not deciding who “won” the argument. It is determining whether both people can honestly examine what happened.

OP needs a partner who recognizes her workload and values her contributions.

Her boyfriend needs to consider whether he sees her as a teammate or someone responsible for meeting his needs.

Moving forward, the important question is not whether she cooked dinner that night.

It is whether both people are willing to build a relationship where care goes both ways.

A loving partnership cannot survive when one person becomes the helper and the other becomes the person being served.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters believed OP’s boyfriend was taking advantage of her and showed a pattern of laziness, entitlement, and disrespect

withcatlikegrace − You know the answer to this. He’s a freeloader. And you

need to be living a life without this lazy creep.

Charlotte992 − NTA He's shown you his true colours now that he "has you" this

attitude will NEVER change. Get out now, while you're not inextricably linked

to him. 🚩 "It's a woman's job" 🚩This isn't the first time it's happened. 🚩His

family doubling down means thats likely how his family lives/lived growing up.

🚩 His friend saying "get her in check" means hes surrounded by people that

are feeding his view on this and he won't listen even if you could have a

respectful conversation about it. Honey, it is not worth your time, effort or

suffering to attempt to change how he sees it.

Preference_Afraid − Yeah this guy is a leech, bail. I have sciatica and I'm

perfectly capable of doing laundry, dishes, cooking, bathrooms, dusting, etc. I

can't do floors without triggering it, but I can run the Swiffer in-between deep cleanings. NTA, obviously.

This group focused on the boyfriend’s sexist attitude and the influence of his family and friends, suggesting those beliefs were deeply rooted

BookEnvironmental689 − Freeloader Wanted to show his boys he has his

woman on a leash and you want to know if you are the one in the wrong. I cant.

_Stephistopheles_ − Given his family's response to the situation, I think we can

safely assume how his dad treats his mom.

These users argued that health issues were not an excuse for avoiding household responsibilities, sharing examples of partners who still contribute despite limitations

Beyarboo − Girl. Girl! ! I do not care how good the s__ is. He is not worth your

time. I have sciatica, RA, and osteoarthritis. I can still clean, do chores, work,

and make dinner. But I don't have to do everything as my husband, who works

full time, does all the laundry, the dishes, and other things around the house.

The bar in your relationship is in hell. You have a hobosexual partner who is

using you. And he is not even hiding his manosphere bs anymore. Please

respect yourself enough to dump this leech. He was nice because he was

hiding his true nature. You are a professional with a bright future ahead of you, he is an anchor holding you down .

ACynicalOptomist − He sounds like a hobosexual. He is using you. You need to

figure out how to get away from this guy. There's a song by Paul Simon called

50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. 🎶You just step out the back Jack, make a new

plan Stan, you don't have to be coy Roy, just get yourself free. 🎶

These commenters described him as a “freeloader” or “hobosexual,” believing he was benefiting from OP’s support without contributing equally

Far_Philosopher6777 − You are a hard working 36 yo woman supporting

herself and her lazy ass boyfriend. Where did he live before he moved in with

you? How did he feed himself and keep his place clean? He is mooching off you

and us apparently hanging out with the red pill brigade.

The only one who needs to be brought in “check” is that lout and just boozing

boyfriends. Don’t worry about losing your temper, worry about losing yourself

in this toxic, one sided relationship. Please make him pack His bags and move in with his family or friends.

VampiresKitten − Definitely not! Drop his ass back at his mother's house. He

wants a bangmaid/mom. He doesn't work your hours, or pay most of the bills

so he should be cooking 75% of the meals anyways.

This group encouraged OP to leave, saying the relationship dynamic was unhealthy and unlikely to improve

Lazybaeallday − If it's "your job" to cook and clean then tell him he better start

paying all the bills as "his job" as a man. But in all honesty, dump him, you deserve and can easily get a better man.

Choice-Education7650 − Losing your temper wouldn't be dropping the can in

his lap. That would be chucking it at his head. Run, far and fast.

OP thought she was moving in with the thoughtful man she met at the aquarium, but instead found herself carrying the emotional and domestic weight of the relationship alone.

One stressful night exposed a bigger issue than a forgotten dinner: expectations, entitlement, and a lack of respect.

While OP admits her reaction was sharp, it came after repeated moments of being treated like a personal chef rather than a partner.

Do you think OP went too far with the ravioli revenge, or was it a justified breaking point after being taken for granted?

How would you handle a partner who suddenly expects traditional roles without discussion? Share your thoughts below!
