Sometimes, the biggest betrayals in a relationship do not happen overnight.

They build over years through broken trust, hidden decisions, and one person carrying more than their fair share while the other takes it for granted.

When a marriage finally reaches its breaking point, the aftermath can reveal secrets that change everything.

The original poster (OP) watched her longtime friend go through years of struggles with her husband, from financial decisions made without her knowledge to a painful separation filled with accusations.

But after her friend’s estranged husband appeared to move on before the divorce was finalized, OP found herself facing a difficult question.

Scroll down to see why she decided to report the situation and whether others agreed with her choice.

'AITA for reporting my friend's husband for Bigamy?'

Context: My friend Maria (65F) and I (66F) have been friends since junior high.

With that came all the ups and downs that are life. We worked together at one

point and that is where she met her, now estranged, husband Mark (67). He

always seemed a bit "too good to be true" for me, but she believed he was her

soulmate, so I ignored the signs.

They married and had children together: About twenty years into their

marriage Mark did some business financing without Maria's knowledge or

consent. She found out when the new mortgage company sent the "coupon

book" (yes it was before online payment options were available). She asked

Mark what had happened, why they got a new coupon book and why her name

was not included as it had been for the first 15 years. I cannot remember the

"excuse" exactly, but it went something like this. "Well, because you have

received such an increase in pay, I thought it would be a good idea to see if we

could pay the mortgage off quicker, but to do that I had to sign some new

paperwork. When she asked why he didn't tell her or why she wasn't required

to sign the new paperwork, he stated "Oh, I signed for both of us. After all you

sign my payroll checks for me, I didn't think it would be a big deal."

You see, Mark has his own business - thanks to Maria and her good credit -

which is actually in both their names. I should also add that Maria had decided

to change careers about two years into their marriage, went to night school

instead of college during the day so Mark could build his business and not

have to worry about watching their children for more than an hour or two.

Maria still worked within her original field while doing night school, caring for

children, Mark and the house. Again, knowing this was (I didn't know about the

switch of mortgage until much later) my spidy senses were off the chain.

Again, Maria said she loved him, and it was just a bump in the road,

Now, let's get to the good stuff; During the pandemic Mark suddenly decided

he didn't want to be married anymore. It wasn't because they were in each

other's pockets due to lock down as Maria works in the medical field and was

front line from the get-go. Mark was bored because his business had to shut

down, as many had to at that time. He started day drinking and cruising the

internet looking for... something. Mark told Maria during one of the very rare

times she could go home, that he was leaving her, he found his true

soulmate... She was devastated, but only a little, she had realized about four

years prior that she no longer loved him, but due to their kids and grandkids

she thought the best was to stay. I didn't think it was a good idea, but such is life.

So, Mark and his new girl began a rage campaign against Maria, mostly the

B\\\\ (Let's call her Corina), texting and email Maria calling her all sorts of

names and telling her how Corina KNEW Maria was a c\\\* and Mark was so

much off without her. Maria filed for divorce and began emptying her home of

Marks's belongings. While doing that she discovered a LARGE sum of cash in

the back of a dresser, that was actually in one of their daughter's childhood

bedrooms. She said nothing to Mark about it, took it to the bank and

deposited it into a brand-new account. She said she had no idea where the

money came from or what it is for, however, she didn't feel comfortable with

knowing that amount of cash was in her home. Turns out that money was

money Mark had received from the government because of the loss of income

due to the pandemic, his business was customer based, but non-essential.

Now, during the following four almost five years, Mark has become increasing

combative (please read as severe a__oholic) and Corina, believing she knows

all things legal (she's so smart, she enhances women's appeal by applying

eyelashes.) have continued their harassment of Maria. Smart woman that

Maria is she's kept every one of them for use when things are finially in the

true settlement stage. The two alcoholics have tried several things to ensure

that Maria doesn't get certain things; including the house and the boat (Maria

paid for it). Mark has also been claiming that he is not making any money, his

business never recovered, according to him. Side note- Mark has two partners

in his businesses now and neither of them have ever said that the business is

failing, according to them, it's thriving again. However. Mark tells the courts

he has no money, can't make mortgage payments and pay his rent. However,

he and Miss Corine travel all over the world, literally. Mark has been through a

number of lawyers including one recommended by a "mutual" friend. At the

end of 2024 Mark and Corina announced that they would be marrying in mid

2025. Several people have told them that Mark would not be divorced in time -

which sent Corina into a frenzied ranting about people not doing their jobs to

get him "free", while ignoring the fact that he is the one not doing what the

courts have ordered him to do. He's hiding money, everyone in his life knows

he is but he doesn't want the courts or the government to know. BTW, Corina is helping him hide it.

This past May 2025, they went ahead with their plan of getting married: went

to a Caribbean country to do it and are now blissfully living their best life back

in the States. So, here we are he's not divorced from his first wife and now

married to his B\\\\ wife. Yes, their marriage that happened in the Caribbean

country is recognized as lawful, so to speak.

So, Am I the A-hole for reporting him to the authorities in his state for bigamy -

Oh another side note: The state Mark and Maria live in is not a no-fault state.

So, if you commit a__ltery (which Mark has because he's been bonking Corina

since the day they met), double whammy here.

Some betrayals hurt because of what happened once. Others hurt because they reveal a pattern that has existed for years.

Watching someone you love be mistreated, manipulated, or taken advantage of can create a complicated mix of anger, helplessness, and the desire to finally see consequences happen.

In OP’s story, the issue is not simply that her longtime friend’s marriage ended badly.

It is the accumulation of years of questionable decisions, secrecy, and alleged dishonesty that eventually pushed OP to take action.

She watched Maria support Mark’s career, help build a life together, and then experience what appeared to be a painful separation filled with hostility and accusations.

From OP’s perspective, reporting him was not only about the legal violation itself, but about seeing someone she cared about finally have some form of protection after years of being hurt.

However, situations involving divorce, money, and legal disputes are often emotionally complicated.

When someone feels they have witnessed unfair treatment, there can be a strong desire to step in and correct the situation.

The challenge is separating personal anger from actions that genuinely serve justice.

A person can feel protective of a friend while also needing to consider whether involvement will actually help or create additional conflict.

One interesting aspect of this situation is the role of loyalty.

Many people believe friendship means defending someone when they are wronged, but healthy support does not always mean fighting every battle for another person.

Sometimes the most helpful thing a friend can do is provide emotional support, encourage professional advice, and allow the person directly involved to make decisions about their own legal situation.

Legal experts often emphasize that matters such as bigamy, financial misconduct, and divorce violations are governed by specific laws that vary depending on location.

This perspective is important because OP’s intentions and the legal outcome are two separate issues.

She may genuinely believe she is protecting Maria, but authorities will focus on documented facts, not personal history.

If Mark violated laws, the evidence will determine what happens. If the matter is primarily a personal dispute between former spouses, the legal system may handle it differently.

The deeper emotional question is whether OP crossed a boundary by becoming involved.

Some readers may see her actions as standing up for a friend who was treated unfairly.

Others may feel that the divorce process should remain between Maria, Mark, and their legal representatives.

Ultimately, this story highlights how difficult it can be to watch someone we care about experience betrayal.

Supporting a friend does not always mean taking control of the situation, but it does mean helping them find their strength and encouraging them to protect themselves.

When serious accusations are involved, the most powerful tool is not anger, but truth supported by evidence.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters strongly supported reporting Mark, believing he should face consequences for possible illegal actions

bdayqueen − NTA - DO IT!

hijabiexplorer − Absolutely not the AH. You should report the POS. Why has your friend not already reported this

Hot_Blood2962 − REPORT HIM!!!!!! Expeditiously immediately

This group emphasized involving Maria first, making sure she understands the situation and can use the information during her divorce proceedings

Melodic-Dark6545 − Does Maria know? what does she want? Because that can

help her get the house and the boat and accuse Mark and Corinne for hiding

money. She could leave him money blank and even some time in jail for the nice pair.

But Maria needs to want it If Maria is not pressing charges, and doesn't want

to get even, you'll make a fool of yourself

GoodWin7889 − NTA. I’d do it so it isn’t her reporting it. She can say she knew

nothing about it. She needs to get on the legal end before he hides more assets.

noonecaresat805 − Nta. I kind of feel like Maria should be the one to do it and

give all the info to her lawyers to also use in her divorce. But I hope you

updateme and let us know how it goes

These commenters encouraged OP to help Maria gather evidence, hire professionals, and pursue financial recovery through legal channels

abear61 − NTAH. Do it ASAP! ! Advise Maria to hire a PI. Also, ask the court to

order an audit of all of his business and personal accounts. Updateme

wibblewobblej − Yesss do it! And get her to hire a forensic accountant, get

everything she’s owed. What a d__che of a man, hope he and his new wife

enjoy everything that’s coming to them! I read on another post the other day

that it’s okay to help karma out sometimes, give it a little push. .to get to the right people!

Ladyvett − Do it and please Updateme

This group focused on the seriousness of Mark’s alleged actions, especially possible bigamy, hidden assets, and legal consequences

Malibu921 − Bad news for them is that regardless of how legal their Caribbean

marriage was, it voided the moment they returned.

tabularfungus − Uh, yeah its federally illegal to be married to more than 1

person at a time. 100% report this and then come back with the update of the fall-out 👏

Vibe_me_pos − Please do it as soon as you can. He deserves every bad thing

that will come his way as a result. NTA Info: Did Mark ever ask Maria for the cash, and did she give it to him?

Maria spent decades building a life with someone who seemed to value her sacrifices, only to discover that the person she trusted most was hiding finances, rewriting the story, and trying to move on before legally ending their marriage.

After years of harassment and watching Mark and Corina ignore court obligations, OP decided enough was enough and reported the suspected bigamy.

Do you think OP crossed a line by getting involved, or was she simply holding someone accountable for breaking the law?

Should personal loyalty ever outweigh exposing serious wrongdoing? Share your thoughts below!
