Deaf Customer Asked for Written Help, But Pharmacy Worker Refused Until a Stranger Stepped In

Good customer service is often about adapting to a person’s needs, especially when communication barriers are involved. A small effort to meet someone halfway can make a huge difference, while refusing to adjust can turn a simple interaction into an unnecessarily difficult experience.

The original poster (OP) witnessed a frustrating moment at a pharmacy when a deaf customer tried to explain that he needed written communication. Despite repeatedly asking the pharmacy technician to write things down, the employee continued speaking without making an effort to accommodate him.

OP stepped in to help the customer communicate and was shocked by how easily the situation could have been resolved. Scroll down to see how this pharmacy interaction unfolded and why OP felt the employee’s behavior was unacceptable.

'Entitled pharmacy tech couldn’t be bothered to communicate with a deaf man'

I was sitting inside waiting for a prescription when I see a man approach the counter.

In a loud broken voice, he said “I am deaf. I am going to need you to write on this paper for me to understand you.”

He handed her a pen and paper and continued to ask about his prescription.

Without looking up from her computer the entire time, she says “okay and what’s your name and date of birth?”

He goes, “huh? I can’t read lips I need you to write it down” and pushes the pen and paper closer.

She just looks at him and says it slower. He again explains he can’t read lips well, guesses and gives her his name.

She says “date of birth?” again, without even looking up, and at this point I’m just flying out of my seat.

I walked up to the counter, tapped the man and smiled, and told the technician, “do you understand this situation?

He doesn’t know what you’re saying.”

I opened the notes app on my phone and apologized for the ignorant technician and asked if he would let me help.

At this point the technician goes “alright alright” and starts the write down on the paper he gave him.

When the man realized she was finally communicating with him, he thanked me and said he would be okay.

It was so surreal to me. Like how the f__k is someone that entitled to not be bothered to write something down for a moment.

That man was such an amazing human, he was still so kind to her after all of that.

Edit: I didn’t want to reply to each comment about this, but I did report her to the store manager.

I hope they took the right steps, I didn’t report her further.

This was a month or so ago, I’m going to try to get her name and report her to the correct agencies!

Many people underestimate how exhausting it can be to navigate a world that is not designed with everyone’s needs in mind.

For people with disabilities, everyday tasks that seem simple to others can become frustrating when others refuse to make small adjustments. Often, the difference between feeling excluded and feeling respected comes down to one person’s willingness to listen.

In this situation, the OP witnessed more than a customer service mistake. The deeper issue was that a deaf customer clearly communicated what he needed in order to understand the conversation, yet the pharmacy technician ignored that request.

The man did not ask for special treatment or extra effort beyond what he needed to access basic communication. He provided paper and a pen himself, showing that he was actively trying to solve the problem.

What made the interaction upsetting was not the inability to communicate perfectly, but the refusal to make a simple accommodation.

The emotional dynamic is especially powerful because the customer remained patient despite being dismissed.

Many people facing repeated barriers develop strategies to stay calm because they have experienced similar situations before. The OP’s reaction also highlights how shocking it can feel to watch someone’s basic needs be ignored when the solution is so simple.

A different perspective is that the technician may not have intended to be cruel. Some workplace interactions happen because of impatience, lack of awareness, or poor training rather than deliberate discrimination.

However, good intentions do not remove the responsibility to provide respectful service. When someone clearly explains a communication barrier, continuing to ignore that request sends a message that their needs are inconvenient.

Disability advocates and accessibility experts often explain that inclusion is not about giving someone an advantage; it is about removing unnecessary barriers.

The Americans with Disabilities Act emphasizes that businesses must provide reasonable accommodations to ensure people with disabilities have equal access to services. This includes effective communication methods when needed, depending on the situation and the individual’s needs.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s intervention mattered. Writing information down required only a few seconds, but it completely changed the interaction.

The customer was no longer forced to guess what was being said or repeatedly explain his situation. A small adjustment restored his ability to participate independently.

The broader lesson is that respect is often shown through small choices. Accessibility is not only about laws or formal policies; it is about everyday moments when people decide whether they will make room for others.

A person should not have to fight to be understood when they have already clearly explained what they need. Sometimes the simplest acts of consideration are the ones that make the biggest difference.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters recommended reporting the pharmacy employee and seeking accountability for discriminatory behavior

Puzzle-Peep − Sounds like the pharmacy tech needs to be reported to either the lead pharmacist or the certifying board or both.

Maybe at least they can get some customer service training.

throwaway77914 − Report the tech, I would.

Careful-Self-457 − I would file a complaint. Pharmacies are required by law to be ADA accessible.

That means making accommodations as they come up. This is inexcusable.

I would also write a review on the stores web page and google/yelp reviews.

Wodan11 − If in the States, file an Accessibility complaint. There are laws that specifically prohibit this.

These Redditors criticized the ableist treatment and praised the poster for stepping in

abernothing − she would absolutely have continued along that trajectory if you hadn't stepped in.

that is insanely ableist behavior especially coming from someone in the healthcare field.

i'm sure that man has to deal with stuff like that all the time. it was good of you to do something about it!

Hopeful_Ad_7719 − That seems like a good way for the pharmacy to get an ADA violation citation.

No_Plankton_114 − You're a good person for stepping in. The world needs more of this.

naraic- − Bold of you to assume that the pharmacy tech could write

These users shared frustration toward poor accessibility and supported making communication easier for everyone

OGPasguis − That tech was so rude. At my old job, there was a client who was deaf.

He was the nicest guy and we communicated using pen and paper.

We used to do anything needed to communicate with him.

It wasnt hard. OP, you are so nice. Thank you for helping him.

mnmsmelt − I get infuriated over this type behavior and cannot stop myself from doing something

Have you ever witnessed someone being treated unfairly and decided to speak up? What would you have done in this situation? Share your thoughts below!
