Woman Spots Neighbor’s Tablet Over Her Fence, Then Realizes It’s Pointed Inside Her Home

Feeling safe at home is something most of us take for granted until another person gives us a reason not to. I can imagine how disturbing it would be to look toward your patio and realize that a strange device might be deliberately pointed through the glass into your living space.

One Redditor had only been living in her new Florida condo for about three weeks when she noticed something repeatedly appearing above the fence separating her patio from her neighbor’s. At first, she assumed there was an innocent explanation.

Then she watched the device slowly turn toward her living room, and a later encounter finally gave her a close enough look to understand what she was seeing.

As a single mother who was frequently home alone with her toddler, the discovery left her frightened and unsure whom she could trust. Scroll down to see what she photographed and why she considered officially reporting her neighbor.

A single mom grows alarmed after spotting her neighbor’s tablet peeking over her patio fence

'My Neighbor is Using a Tablet stick to pick Inside my Apartment!'

I moved at the end of February into a condo, so it has been only 3 weeks.

Three times, at different times, I have seen some sort of device on a stick that looked like a tablet over the dividing fence of my patio and the neighbor's.

I have glass sliding doors so I saw the device while I was in my living room.

At first I thought it was just reaching up for something and didn't bother much.

The next time I saw it being turned slowly toward my living room, while the person was trying to keep it steady.

Tonight, it was reaching closer and I got the chance to see it about three feet away and noticed the adjusting bolts and exactly what it was.

He placed it down when he saw me and heard me get upset about it as I was talking on my phone, but I got the chance to take a...

It was a tablet on a selfie stick!!!

The older man that lives next door works for the county and is part of the HOA.

I have spoken with him once and the complex manager raved about how nice he was and that they'd known each other for 35 years.

So I'm trying to figure out the best route.

What I know is that I live in Winter Park, FL and this is criminal and falls under Statute 810.14, but more important,

I am mortified, freaked out and feel very uncomfortable just sitting in my living room with the blackout blinds down.

I am a single mom of a toddler and I'm usually home by myself --which I am sure that he knows by now.

If it wasn't for the pictures I was able to take of the tablet, I'd probably wouldn't consider officially reporting.

But, who should I report it to? These are privately owned condos. I rent from the owner. My lease is barely a month.

There's the HOA, the complex mamanagement company, the owner, the police... Advice, please!

And, for the record, I do not walk around in my underwear or less while the blinds are open and I'm sure he's done this more than the 3 times...

I've also been sitting quietly outside and noticed by the sound how unusually slow he opened the screen door but didn't put much thought into it.

Now, it makes sense: I have an fing creep/perve as a neighbor! 😱😳😥

Few things are more unsettling than suddenly feeling watched inside the one place that is supposed to provide privacy. Home normally allows people to lower their guard, move freely, and stop thinking about who might be observing them. Once that sense of security is disturbed, even an ordinary living room can begin to feel exposed.

In this situation, the OP was reacting to more than an unfamiliar device appearing above a patio fence. She described seeing it repeatedly, noticing it being slowly turned toward her living room, and eventually photographing what appeared to be a tablet attached to a stick. That pattern understandably changed how she interpreted earlier noises and movements from next door.

As a mother frequently home alone with a toddler, her anxiety was also tied to vulnerability and uncertainty. She did not yet know exactly what had been captured, if anything, which can make the fear harder to contain.

A different perspective is important here: the neighbor’s good reputation does not resolve what happened. People often hesitate to report troubling behavior when the suspected person is older, respected, professionally connected, or well-liked by others. That social credibility can make someone question their own perception.

Yet reputation and evidence are separate questions. Likewise, the OP should avoid assuming motives she cannot establish while still taking repeated observable behavior seriously.

Psychologically, this loss of safety can create a state resembling hypervigilance. Cleveland Clinic describes hypervigilance as an intensified threat response in which someone becomes unusually alert to possible danger and finds it difficult to relax.

That helps explain why the OP began keeping blackout blinds closed and reconsidering previously insignificant sounds. Her nervous system was responding to a newly perceived threat in an environment that had previously felt ordinary.

There is also a legitimate legal reason not to dismiss the concern. Florida Statute 810.14 addresses secretly observing someone inside a dwelling where that person has a reasonable expectation of privacy when the required intent is present. Whether this specific incident satisfies every legal element would be for authorities to determine, not the OP.

That distinction suggests a practical response. Rather than personally confronting a neighbor she already feels unsafe around, preserving the photographs, recording dates and details, notifying the property owner or management in writing, and making a police report creates documentation without forcing her to prove the case herself.

Stalking-prevention specialists similarly recommend saving photographs and maintaining records of concerning incidents when repeated surveillance-type behavior occurs.

The strongest response here is neither panic nor silence. It is documentation, reasonable safety precautions, and letting appropriate authorities evaluate the evidence. Privacy is difficult to restore once someone begins doubting it, which is exactly why repeated behavior like this deserves careful attention rather than being brushed aside.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters urged reporting the behavior to police immediately instead of confronting the neighbor

Middle-Reindeer-2625 − First check the s__ual offenders list, take this seriously and report it to the police.

Give them the photo and document what and when you first saw it appear over your deck. Don’t mix this up with being nice to neighbors, it’s criminal conduct.

Connect_Office8072 − Take this to the police. If you try and confront him yourself, you will just get a line of crap.

If you report it to the police, you will be making a paper trail, because chances are, this won’t be the last time he tries to pull something like that.

superduperhosts − Cops. Call the cops. Have him arrested before he deletes the photos

RKEPhoto − DO NOT confront him first - that will only give him a chance to destroy any recordings that he's mad.

Just CALL THE POLICE! It's the obvious response.

These Redditors emphasized documenting every incident and preserving evidence to protect the family

BigB322 − If you have a toddler, report him to the police as a child predator. Get a camera and catch him in the act, then report it.

Tell them he is recording you and your toddler in your home without your consent,

and you're worried he is a child predator trying to get pictures of your toddler.

BornFree2018 − Have your phone with you at all times so you can video the next time.

I don't know the legalities, but next time if I was close enough to his device, I'd grab it and drag in down into my yard.

Then I'd drive to the police station with it. If you can recall the 3 other times & dates make notes for your police report.

These users recommended installing cameras to capture further incidents and strengthen any complaint

Anxious-Ad-5048 − Get some security cameras and point them right back at him. Gather evidence. Also think about moving.

Skipadedodah − Ring camera. Excellent video quality and easy to set up and use. First few months of monitoring is free.

Set up a camera, record the transgressions and call authorities You can set it up on your table, and put something over it to disguise it,

like a blanket or a jacket and make a you and the fabric to kinda just drape over it so it’s not just standing out.

You can also check your camera feed to make sure you’re not obstructing anything and then just wait.

These Redditors stressed creating an official paper trail rather than relying on informal complaints

Additional-Aioli-545 − I'd open a police report, provide whatever evidence you have. Don't sit on this - get it documented just in case it escalates.

Then address the window. I bought Window Film so I could see out but no one can see in.

For the windows that I don't need to see out but want privacy and light, I bought Rice Paper Window film.

I installed it myself but I'm considering having someone from the auto window tint shop come redo it so it is flawless.

4LeggedKC − Don’t bother with the HOA because most likely the president and the neighbor know each other.

The Pres will cover the neighbors ass and sweep it under the rug. Get all of the video or photo evidence you can to back up your complaint.

Make a police complaint and ask for a copy of it.

Do it now and don’t back down, we’re talking about your child’s safety and yours. Be safe.

Should she take those directly to police, notify her landlord first, or contact both while documenting anything that happens next? And would anyone confront the neighbor personally under these circumstances?
