She Threw Away Her Coworker’s Giant Desk Fern and Let the Boss Take the Blame for Three Months

The problem started with a plant.

Not a tiny succulent sitting quietly beside a monitor. Not a tasteful office plant that made the workspace feel a little more pleasant. This was a huge, unruly fern in an ugly orange plastic pot that had slowly taken over the space between two coworkers’ desks.

Dave, the owner of the fern, was apparently a perfectly nice guy. Unfortunately, he also seemed to have a very flexible definition of “shared space.”

The fern’s leaves constantly spilled over onto his coworker’s side of the desk. They brushed against her monitor, dropped dried bits onto her keyboard, and generally turned her workspace into an accidental greenhouse.

She asked Dave twice if he could trim it or move it.

He laughed it off.

The plant needed sunlight from the window behind her, he explained.

After months of dealing with dead leaves and dust every morning, she finally decided she had had enough. What happened next was less workplace diplomacy and more botanical eviction.

She Threw Away Her Coworker’s Giant Desk Fern and Let the Boss Take the Blame for Three Months

'I threw away my coworker's desk plant three months ago and let everyone think our boss did it?'

We have this guy in our department, Dave, who is genuinely nice but has zero sense of boundaries when it comes to shared space.

Last spring he brought in this massive, unruly fern in an ugly orange plastic pot and set it right on the edge of the partition between our desks.

Half the leaves were constantly hanging over onto my side, brushing against my monitor and dropping dried brown specks all over my keyboard every single time the AC kicked on.

I asked him twice if he could trim it back or shift it to the other side of his desk, but he just laughed and said the plant "needed the...

After four months of blowing dead leaf dust off my mousepad every morning, I just snapped.

It was a Friday night back in May and I was working late to finish up quarterly reports.

Everyone else had left by 6:30 PM. I looked at that stupid bushy plant, grabbed it by the base, walked it straight out to the big industrial dumpster behind the...

On Monday morning Dave walked in and immediately noticed it was gone. He was super upset and asked around the floor. Our supervisor, who is notoriously strict about office clutter...

"Well, the office should look clean and organized anyway." Dave instantly assumed the boss had tossed it over the weekend as an unauthorized personal item.

The boss never explicitly said he threw it away, but he didn't deny it either—probably just assumed facilities cleared it out during routine maintenance.

Now Dave occasionally makes passive-aggressive comments about how "management has no soul," and everyone on our team agrees with him.

I just nod along and join in on complaining about company policy, but the truth is I just couldn't take another leaf falling onto my keyboard.

The Fern Had Finally Gone Too Far

For four months, the coworker tolerated the plant.

Every time the air conditioning kicked on, pieces of dried fern seemed to drift across the partition. Her keyboard and mousepad collected little brown specks, and she found herself cleaning up after a plant she didn’t even own.

She tried the reasonable approach first.

She asked Dave to trim it.

Then she asked him to move it.

Neither request went anywhere.

Eventually, one Friday evening in May, she was working late to finish the quarterly reports. By around 6:30 PM, everyone else had gone home.

She looked over at the enormous fern.

And apparently decided that Friday night was moving day.

She picked up the plant, carried it through the office, took it outside to the industrial dumpster behind the loading dock, and pushed it underneath a pile of discarded cardboard boxes.

Problem solved.

Or so she thought.

When Dave arrived Monday morning, he immediately noticed his beloved fern was missing.

He started asking people what had happened. The supervisor overheard him and made a comment about the office needing to look clean and organized.

That was apparently enough for Dave.

He assumed management had removed the plant.

The supervisor never actually said he had thrown it away. But he also didn’t correct Dave’s assumption, probably because he believed facilities had removed an unauthorized piece of office clutter.

And that accidental misunderstanding became the story.

Three Months of Silent Guilt

Dave started making comments about how management had “no soul.”

Other coworkers agreed with him.

The coworker who had actually thrown the plant away?

She said nothing.

She even joined in when everyone complained about company policies.

For three months, Dave apparently believed his boss had personally declared war on his fern, while the real culprit sat nearby pretending to share his outrage.

At some point, the fern had acquired a completely unnecessary workplace mythology.

The funny part is that the original complaint wasn’t exactly unreasonable. She had asked twice. The plant was physically interfering with her workspace, and Dave had basically dismissed her concerns.

But getting rid of someone else’s property without permission is a very different thing from asking them to move it.

That distinction is where the Reddit debate became interesting.

Here's the feedback from the Reddit community:

AMG-Life − Dave here, I did have my suspicions but couldn’t believe it, but now I’m sure. You’ll be hearing from HR soon, buddy.

tepid_monologue − What’s with all the desk plant related confessions in the past 2 weeks?

coasstal_drifter − Your desk is your workspace, not a botanical garden for his unruly fern

pickkneegirl − BOT. Fake post. A post with the same format was made a couple of weeks ago except they threw out a noisy keyboard instead of a fern plant.

AdCandid4609 − Sounds like Dave actually had an emotional support plant 😂 He might benefit from a DIFFERENT type of plant. 🌱

rosiiemilk − You were justified in getting rid of it after asking twice, but man, the fact that you’ve been sitting there nodding along while Dave blames management for three...

sweetiepixie2 − The fact that the boss accidentally took the blame and you’ve been silently letting it happen for three months is honestly the funniest part. You had a legitimate...

Street-Question582 − Hi. Fern here. I was rescued by a dumpster diver and am now situated in front of a large window. I was never happy in that office. I...

canarily − Is this a copy paste of a previous story but plant instead of keyboard?

SweatyLettuce88 − I would've done the exact same thing. Always hated it when the booth next to me looks like either a s__t garden competition or an explosion in a...

All you gotta worry about is if Dave finds this post 😆

Final Thoughts

The coworker probably had a legitimate workplace complaint, but secretly throwing away another employee’s property wasn’t exactly the professional solution.

And once the boss accidentally took the blame, continuing to let everyone believe it for three months turned a simple desk dispute into an office conspiracy.

The fern may be gone, but its legacy apparently lives on.

Would you have thrown the plant away after asking twice, or would you have gone to management first?
