She Invited Another Friend After a 20-Minute Silence, and a Simple Water Park Trip Turned Into Family Drama

For a 12-year-old, getting invited to a water park with a free guest pass should have been an easy, exciting plan. Instead, a last-minute invitation turned into a disagreement between two families over how long someone should wait for a response.

A mother had offered to take her daughter and one friend to the water park the following morning. Her daughter first invited Friend A, but A canceled around 9 p.m. With only one spot available, the daughter quickly asked Friend B if she wanted to come.

She Invited Another Friend After a 20-Minute Silence, and a Simple Water Park Trip Turned Into Family Drama

'AITA for telling my 12-year-old daughter she did nothing wrong by inviting another friend when the first friend didn’t respond?'

Yesterday I told my 12-year-old daughter I’d be happy to take her and a friend to a water park today. She had a free “bring a friend” pass, and she...

Around 9 p.m., A told my daughter she couldn’t go after all. I told my daughter that if she wanted to invite someone else, that was fine.

My daughter texted friend B to see if she wanted to go. When B didn’t respond after about 10 minutes, my daughter tried calling her.

Still no response. About 20 minutes after the original text, she invited friend C instead. C immediately said yes, so the plans were set.

At about 10:30 p.m., B finally responded saying she wanted to go. My daughter told her she was sorry, but someone else had already taken the spot.

B replied, “OK, no problem,” and my daughter said she was sorry and that she hoped they could hang out soon. They also spoke by phone and my daughter explained...

B’s mother became upset with my daughter and with us. She said that once my daughter invited B, she should have waited for B to respond before inviting anyone else.

We explained that this was a last-minute plan for the following morning, and my daughter had tried texting and calling B before moving on to another friend. I also apologized...

B’s mother still feels that my daughter, and my wife and I, were rude and thoughtless. I showed her the texts from the night before, including B acknowledging that the...

I disagree. My view is that with a last-minute invitation like this, you can ask someone, give them a reasonable opportunity to respond, and then move on if you don’t...

For what it’s worth, I couldn’t simply take both girls. I only had one extra seat in the car because I was also dropping my son and another child off...

**AITA for telling my daughter she did nothing wrong by moving on and inviting another friend when she didn’t hear back?**

B didn’t answer.

After waiting about 10 minutes, the daughter called her. Still nothing. Another 20 minutes passed, and with the evening getting late, she invited Friend C instead. C immediately accepted, so the plans were settled.

Then B finally responded.

She said she wanted to go, but by that point the spot was already taken. The daughter apologized and explained what had happened. B replied, “OK, no problem.” As far as the daughter was concerned, the situation was over.

It wasn’t.

The next morning, B’s mother called, expecting to drop her daughter off for the water park. When she learned that another friend had taken the spot, she became upset.

According to her, once the daughter invited B, she should have waited for B to respond before asking anyone else.

The girl’s parents disagreed. This wasn’t a trip planned weeks in advance. It was a last-minute invitation for the following morning. The daughter had tried both texting and calling B, and eventually had to make another arrangement.

Still, the parents admitted there was something they could have handled better.

The daughter could have sent B one more message saying that because the trip was happening the next morning, she needed to ask someone else if B didn’t respond soon. That small bit of communication might have prevented the entire misunderstanding.

And that was really the heart of the Reddit debate.

The parents weren’t necessarily wrong for moving on. But several commenters thought the daughter had been too quick to assume that 20 minutes was enough time for a 12-year-old to respond late at night. B could have been showering, getting ready for bed, away from her phone, or simply not expecting an immediate answer.

At the same time, B’s mother seemed to overlook one important detail. Her daughter had already been told that the spot was gone and had responded that it was “no problem.”

What Communication Experts Would Say

Relationship and communication experts frequently emphasize that misunderstandings become much easier to avoid when expectations are made explicit instead of assumed. The Gottman Institute’s communication resources, for example, focus heavily on clear communication and avoiding assumptions about what another person knows or intends.

That principle fits this situation surprisingly well. The daughter wasn’t unreasonable for needing an answer, but she also shouldn’t have assumed B understood that the invitation had an expiration point. A simple message such as, “I need to know soon because the trip is tomorrow, otherwise I’ll ask someone else,” would have removed most of the ambiguity.

At the same time, B’s mother could have recognized that children don’t always communicate every detail to their parents. B may have interpreted “OK, no problem” as the end of the conversation, while her mother later assumed the original invitation was still active.

Nobody needed a family feud over a water park ticket.

Here's what the community had to contribute:

I don't think anyone is really an a__hole here, but it is an opportunity to teach your daughter clear communication.

rialtolido − ESH. You and your daughter handled this poorly. The original invitation should have included a deadline. A simple: “I need to know in the next 20 minutes, otherwise...

Final Thoughts

The daughter wasn’t wrong for wanting to finalize her plans. She made a reasonable decision with limited time and only one available seat. But this was also a perfect opportunity to teach her that clear communication can prevent hurt feelings.

A quick “I need an answer soon or I’ll have to ask someone else” would probably have solved everything.

So, was the daughter wrong for moving on, or should she have waited longer before inviting someone else?
