Neighbor Blames Tenant for Cannabis Smell Until He Points Out Where Her Teenagers Hang Out

Living beside other people occasionally means dealing with strange smells, mysterious noises, and complaints nobody can immediately explain. The trouble begins when a neighbor decides they already know exactly who is responsible and refuses to reconsider, even when the timeline makes their theory difficult to believe.

One Redditor learned this after their landlord sent a reminder that marijuana could not be smoked on the property. The OP admitted to smoking outside once the previous week and immediately agreed to take it elsewhere. That should have settled things, but a neighbor insisted the smell was still appearing overnight and even early in the morning.

According to her, it was somehow traveling from the OP’s home through the pipes and into the basement where her teenagers liked to hang out. That detail gave the OP a very different theory about the mysterious odor. Scroll down to see how the confrontation unfolded.

A tenant stopped smoking on the property, yet his neighbor insisted her basement still smelled of cannabis

'Neighbour blames me cuz her “teenagers den smells like pot”'

Neighbour seemed perfectly friendly at first.

Then one day the landlord sends a reminder that no marijuana is to be smoked on the property,

and that the neighbours are saying there is a pot smell that starts in the evening and lingers until the morning.

So I had smoked on the back deck the previous week one night...

but I couldnt imagine the smell would be so strong that it lingers until the morning... either way I said no problem!

And moved any wacky tobacky consumption off of the property completely.

So a couple days later I saw Karen outside and she smiled and said hello. I went to talk to her and I gave her my phone number.

I told her that if she has any issues with me I would appreciate it if she talks to me first before the landlord if something is bothering her.

I also told her that any weed smoking has been moved of the property (it's a townhouse) and that it won't be a problem going forward.

So then she starts in on me. Angrily she says "My basement smells like pot! Even this morning it smells like pot!"

I'm relieved at this point as I realize the complaint isn't even about me. I kind of laugh and tell her that there is a basement tenent.

We have no access to the basement, and not only that- but we haven't smoked on the property at all in many days.

She doubled down haha. She said "you (while pointing at me) are smoking pot in the house.

At night and in the morning and it's coming down the pipes to my basement!

The basement is our den, and our cozy hangout spot. That is where my teenagers hang out- I can't have it smelling like pot in there.

I really worked hard not to laugh right in her face. "Through the pipes" and also "where my teenagers hang out".

It is some level of clueless to smell pot in your teenagers hangout basement and assume it's the upstairs tenant neighbours.

AND decide to call their landlord instead of talking first.

Not to mention I have two kids under two- hahaa I'm not waking up with the babies and roasting bongs in the house at 5 am.

So anyways I tell her "if your basement smells like pot this morning- and it is apparently coming from my house- why don't you just come inside and smell.

It must reek in my house if the smell is strong enough to "come down the pipes" to your basement.

She didn't come inside and she hasn't talked to me since. Eat rocks Karen

People often become most defensive when they feel blamed for something they know they are no longer doing. That kind of accusation can feel especially frustrating when someone has already changed their behavior in good faith.

Instead of feeling appreciated for respecting a boundary, they suddenly feel cast as the villain in a story that may have very little to do with them.

In this situation, the OP had already acknowledged smoking outside once and responded reasonably when the landlord sent a reminder. They moved all marijuana use off the property and even gave the neighbor their phone number in an effort to prevent future misunderstandings.

The emotional tension changed when the neighbor continued accusing them despite reporting a smell at times when the OP said no smoking was happening. At that point, the disagreement stopped being about a rule violation and became about credibility, suspicion, and who gets believed.

A fresh way to look at this is through confirmation bias. Once the neighbor decided the OP was the source, every later smell may have seemed like additional proof, even when the timeline no longer fit. Humans often search for explanations that match what they already believe.

The basement itself is also psychologically important: because it was described as the teenagers’ hangout space, the neighbor may have been more comfortable blaming an outside adult than considering explanations closer to home.

Psychologist Raymond Nickerson famously reviewed confirmation bias as the tendency to seek, interpret, and remember information in ways that support existing beliefs while giving less weight to contradictory evidence. His academic review shows how this pattern can influence everyday reasoning, not just major decisions.

That framework helps explain why the OP’s offer to let the neighbor inspect the house was so effective. Instead of continuing an abstract argument, they introduced a simple reality check: if smoke were strong enough to travel from their home into another unit, their own interior should presumably show some evidence of it.

The neighbor declined, which does not prove where the odor originated, but it exposed how quickly accusation had outrun verification.

The OP was justified in feeling annoyed, though one useful lesson is to keep future interactions factual and documented rather than sarcastic. Since a landlord is already involved, dates, written messages, and a clear record that smoking stopped on the property could matter more than winning an argument at the fence.

Sometimes the hardest part of neighbor disputes is not the original problem. It is watching someone become emotionally attached to an explanation before checking whether it is true.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters joked that the neighbor was refusing to accept that her teenagers might be smoking cannabis

JEWCEY − Technically, smoke does go through pipes. Just not the ones she was talking about.

Chaghatai − It sounds like your comment made her realize that her teenagers were smoking pot

and she was too embarrassed to say anything about that afterwards to you

WtfChuck6999 − I'm dying that this woman is so delusional she doesn't even realize her teen is smoking pot. LOLOL

Dazzling-Pizza5141 − Oh I can only imagine Christmas dinner 20 years from now and the mom brings up in casual dinner conversation "

Do you remember that rude neighbor we had that smoked so much pot he made our basement stink? "

Then a slow smile creeps over her grown daughter's face.

These Redditors shared stories of parents blaming mysterious outsiders instead of suspecting their own teenagers

Tigger7894 − Oh this reminds me of the bottles of alcohol my parents discovered full of water.

They swear that it was done by my dad's late brother who was an a__oholic.

Uh, while I didn't do it, there were THREE teenagers in the house at one point. Why can't you just laugh that your kids were kids.

(yeah I think it was one of my siblings, but why my parents' don't, I have no idea. )

CrabFarts − I used to live in a neighborhood where a lot of the two-story houses had chimneys for wood-burning stoves in the basement.

The chimneys each had an outdoor access panel.

My neighbor across the street said "someone" in the neighborhood was storing pot in their outdoor access panel.

Yeah, sure, " someone". Certainly not either of the teenagers living in your house.

That_Ol_Cat − Of course it can't be her innocent little babies. ..

This commenter jokingly compared the situation to a fictional family where teenage characters were known for similar behavior

Theawokenhunter777 − Are your neighbors named red and kitty? Got a son named Eric and Laurie? Hahahaha

This Redditor praised the poster for protecting the teenagers by refusing to expose them

FancyPantsMead − It's cool of you to not rat out those teens! Lol.

This commenter acknowledged that smoke can spread through buildings while criticizing the neighbor’s refusal to consider her children responsible

[Reddit User] − So as someone who lives in a hostel and doesn’t smoke where *all* the neighbours do, the smell gets EVERYWHERE.

Yes, it lingers, and it can cause breathing issues (from experience because of the smoke) smells awful and it’s wholly inconsiderate of others.

There’s a reason you’re not to smoke on the property.

It’s in the f__king walls at this point honestly I’m sick of it But yeah no her teenagers smoke pot too,

and their mother is too blind to the fact that her kids aren’t perfect angels and that everyone else isn’t the problem.

Sorry you gotta deal with someone like that dude 😭

if you don’t watch out she’ll start blaming you for making her teenagers smoke pot- there’s no winning in this situation.

Was the neighbor understandably frustrated but pointing at the wrong household, or could smoke have been traveling farther than the tenant realized? And would anyone have accepted his invitation to come inside and investigate?
