Neighbor Announces Late-Night Party, but Months of Frightening Fights Have Tenant Ready to Call Police

in Social Issues

Calling the police over a New Year’s Eve party might sound excessive at first. Context can change that impression quickly, especially when the gathering is only the latest problem in a long history of disturbing behavior that has already left another resident afraid inside their own home.

That was the dilemma one Redditor described after months of trouble with a neighboring couple. Arguments could allegedly be heard through the apartment’s thin walls, along with threats, objects being thrown, and disturbing confrontations between the two residents. Their landlord knew about the situation and wanted the tenants gone, but previous warnings apparently accomplished little.

When one neighbor casually mentioned throwing a party beginning around 11 p.m., the OP started preparing for another sleepless night. This time, however, the landlord suggested involving law enforcement if the noise continued. Keep reading to see why the OP was still hesitant and what timing seemed fair.

A tenant fears a violent neighbor and debates calling police when his New Year’s party breaks noise rules

'I'm calling the cops on my neighbors tonight'

Before you say I'm the a__hole for calling the cops on New Years, hear me out first.

Since I've moved in my neighbors are non-stop fighting and making my life hell.

The couple is slamming doors, throwing s__t, and even physically violent towards eachother.

This man is slapping her, pulling her hair, spitting on her, and even threaten to p__s on her.

Yes, when I heard all of this through my very thin walls I wanted to rush over and tell this woman to RUN or he's going to k__l you.

I live in a very small complex. The guy would of know it was me calling the cops. I fear for my own safety. He has a bad background.

I've reached out to my landlord at least 5-6 times over it. He's 100% on my side and wants to evict them.

My neighbor told me he's having a new years eve party tonight at 11. I didn't really say anything.

Don't throw a f__king party late at night if you live an apartment and know the walls are thin. You're an a__hole!

I immediately called my landlord because my ass is working early tomorrow morning. Landlord encouraged me to call the cops.

He said if I call the cops he can evict him sooner and less likely the guy can fight the eviction and win.

He's reached out to the tentant numerous times and even spoke to him in person. The tentant doesn't give a f__k.

My landlord wants him gone. I want him gone. If this party persist past 12:30-1am I'm calling the cops.

Knowing my neighbor, it's going too. Call me an a__hole, I don't care.

I have a security system to document if he tries anything. I'm scared and doing it!

Any kind words of advice?

The noise ordinance is 10pm here. Since it's gonna be New years, I am thinking I should wait till at least 12:30am to call the police.

I worry the cops won't come or take it seriously because it's New years. Why I thought waiting till late would be better. What time would you call??

UPDATE: I'm shaking, I'm so scared. The plan was to call sometime after midnight. The party hasn't even started yet.

I just called 911 because the neighbors started screaming. He was beating her. The cops came within minutes. I pray to God this girl never comes back.

I really hope this man is arrested tonight. I am currently waiting to find out. I have a doorbell camera watching everything unfold.

The landlord confirmed he's being evicted. I pray he will be gone by the end of next month. Until then, I will remain low and be on guard.

Will likely carry a pocket knife in hand when coming home to be safe until he's gone.

Edit: The cops left. The woman left, and the guy wasn't arrested. The music just started, even though the party isn't supposed to be till much later.

It's clear this party is still happening tonight. When the f**k will this guy learn?!?!? If it gets too loud I am 100% calling the cops AGAIN.

At least I know they will show up after they just came for domestic violence call!

1st update: Less than 3 hours after calling cops the party is in full blast. Oh.. THE WOMAN IS BACK

2nd update: Called the cops at 1:30am. To be honest, I was afraid too again. Why I waited so long. They drove by and said they weren't loud enough.

I can't sleep the partying is so f**king loud. Cop said he'll still file a second police report to make sure he's out.

Landlord is dropping off 30 day eviction notice tomorrow. F**k me sleeping tonight though.

I got so pissed off after finding out the cops won't shut down the party that I started slamming my doors.

Yeah, I know, it doesn't solve sh*t. I am mentally exhausted. I can't do this all night.

Decided I'm gonna blast white noise on the TV and my upstairs one too. Best I can think of to block out this party.

3rd update: Besides the fact I'm losing my f**king mind right now, the white noise is working awesome!

I can hear the guy is shit faced, and he goes, "What's all that noise?" The woman goes, "Oh that's the f**king neighbors!"

Taste of your own f**king medicine. Be grateful it's only white noise and not baby shark on a full 10hr video.

I'd like to see them call the cops on me for f**king white noise. Cops are on my side!

On a side note, I now know what room is their bedroom. Up to them if they choose to continue playing, "F**k around and find out game."

4th update: Now in bed, probably still won't sleep. I'm afraid to sleep. I've never been happier to hear my partner snoring.

I am grateful that at least one of us is getting some sleep.

5th update: Just woke up. I feel like a zombie. I'm so tired. Thank god, I was able to get out of work. Boss was super understanding.

Now it's 9:30am, and I swear there must still be at least 15 people in that apt.

No music, but loud as f**k talking, yelling, slamming doors. No, no one is fighting. When will this f**king end!!!!

OMFG THE MUSIC JUST STARTED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! ITS 9:30 IN THE F**CKING MORNING

This neighbor turns into a bigger and bigger piece of shit by the minute. I swear they are pushing me to the breaking point of getting on their level.

I'm about ready to take some pots and pans and start banging them together. Oh this f**ker ain't sleeping tonight.

I'm about to blast white noise all night directly into their bedroom. I WANT ALL YOUR GUYS SUGGESTIONS! WHAT SHOULD I DO ALL DAY?

Obviously, things that won't get the cops called on me. For example, using the blender excessively, bolting up and down my stairs, etc.

6th update: Everyone is gone now. They all left around 10:30am. My neighbors have been gone since. Thank god!

I really was about to pull out my blender and have my dog race up and down the hardwood stairs for treats! Landlord is picking up eviction papers now.

It should have never gotten this far, but it's nice to know I get the last laugh!

7th update: Pretty sure the landlord only picked up the eviction papers yesterday. 99% they are being posted today on his door.

Shall wait and see on the camera! I'm excited!

8th update: Landlord is here telling him right now he's being evicted.

Unsurprising, the guy completely threw all the blame on his girlfriend. She isn't home yet. News flash, the landlord gave you more than 4 warnings. It's on you

9th update: 2 days after finding out he's being evicted and music is now back on.

Remaining calm (attempting) and reminding myself the asshole has 28 days left to gtfo! I pray I don't have to call the cops again for domestic violence.

Found out he got kicked out of his last place too! Some people really are f**king morons. Side note, I think I'm gonna go vacuum now.

10th update: It's 11pm. It's f**king Sunday. They've been loud as hell since 6pm.

Currently have both air purifiers on the highest setting and white noise on too.

I wake up at 5:30 for work. I'm making sure your ass is waking up at 5:30 too!

11th update: Neighbors were insanely loud from 7pm until 3:30am. I got maybe 3hrs of sleep.

I swear to god it sounded like they were moving furniture at 3am. My partner goes, "Are we the crazy ones? Is there some holiday tomorrow?"

Does no one f**king work? We have another 4 weeks of this shit. Counting down the days!

There is a difference between being irritated by loud neighbors and living beside violence that makes someone afraid inside their own home. Repeated yelling, slamming, threats, and physical aggression can gradually turn an apartment into a place of constant tension. At that point, calling for outside help is no longer simply about wanting peace and quiet.

In this situation, the OP was dealing with two overlapping problems. The New Year’s party was frustrating because of work the next morning and an existing noise ordinance, but the deeper issue was the history of violence next door.

Hearing a man slap, pull hair, spit on, and threaten his partner changes the emotional meaning of every future disturbance. The OP was not only anticipating loud music. They were anticipating another volatile night involving someone they already believed could become dangerous.

A fresh perspective is that the OP may have been focusing on the party because it felt easier to justify than the domestic violence. Noise rules are concrete: there is a stated cutoff time, a landlord, and a straightforward complaint.

Abuse is psychologically harder because witnesses often worry about retaliation, uncertainty, and whether intervention could make things worse. That fear can leave neighbors frozen between wanting to help and wanting to remain invisible.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline specifically addresses this dilemma. Its guidance for neighbors explains that people should consider both the survivor’s safety and their own.

When someone believes there is immediate danger, contacting police can be appropriate, and documenting what is heard or witnessed can help establish a pattern of abusive behavior. The organization also cautions that police involvement can sometimes create additional risks for a survivor, which is why the circumstances matter.

That expert perspective changes the question from “What time is late enough to complain about a party?” to “What exactly is happening when the call is made?” If there is merely music after the local quiet-hours limit, the OP can follow the established non-emergency process.

If screaming, threats, sounds of assault, or an immediate safety emergency begin, waiting until 12:30 or 1:00 simply because it is New Year’s Eve would make little sense. The relevant issue would then be potential violence, not celebration etiquette.

The OP’s fear also deserves recognition. Repeated exposure to threatening behavior nearby can make someone unusually alert to danger, a reaction psychologists describe as hypervigilance. Avoiding a personal confrontation with someone believed to be violent is therefore not cowardice; it can be a sensible safety decision.

The most realistic approach is to keep documenting disturbances, maintain the security measures already in place, work through the landlord, and use the appropriate authorities when circumstances justify it.

The OP does not need to become the couple’s mediator or personally confront the neighbor. Sometimes being a responsible neighbor means recognizing when a problem has moved beyond annoyance and into territory that should not be handled alone.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters urged reporting suspected domestic violence and documenting threats instead of ignoring the situation

Sparky_Dan_UT − Be prepared for life to suck for a bit. But hopefully your landlord can evict them.

When you call the cops, mention you don't feel safe and everything you've heard. Also, start recording what you hear if you hear stuff like that

Excellent-Goat803 − Don’t worry about what people will think if you call police, tell them you want to remain anonymous.

Do you feel like there would be blood on your hands if he does hurt his wife? I would feel that way if I were in your shoes…

1lilqt − Make sure you record threats, to you or from the walls. . because that's intent

LugoLove − You won’t be calling about noise you’ll be calling about domestic violence.

If he is abusing her as you described, the cops don’t need her to tell them nothing’s going on. They will be able to determine by looking at her, but...

These commenters shared experiences where repeated disturbances eventually required police or landlord intervention.

Bigchungus182 − If it makes you feel better I called the police on my neighbour on Christmas eve

because his unofficial roommate got locked out so kicked the door in so him and his scummy mates could come in and it all through the night.

To add to it they left the place in a state according to police and the door was left wide open for the next few days until I called building...

I don't think the guy could get in when he got home but not my problem, what was my problem was the cunts coming in and out of the flat...

while my toddler was trying to sleep and the smell of a dingy flat and stale cigarettes that wafted through the building because the door was left open. F__k em.

Ok_Establishment1951 − I had the same type if situation a few years ago.

Although I lived in a condo but I rented it my landlord didn’t own the one underneath me.

I never knew the landlord was. Had this couple that always fighting in that one underneath me. I believe he was beating her.

I tried to ignore it but I had to be at work at 7 am and my son school the next day. It went on for months.

They would slam things and my wall would be shaking until 3 am. Finally my son couldn’t sleep for school and enough was enough.

I called the police she wouldn’t say he was hitting her.

The police knock down their door down. They knew it was me and called cps trying to say I was abusing my son.

I got through it and was finally able to move. I don’t blame you. I hope you can get it resolved. Luckily the landlord is on your side.

Time-Turnip-2961 − Honestly, just call the cops every time you hear noise,

but don’t say it’s a domestic disturbance because that could possibly make it harder to evict them.

Say it’s for noise and you don’t feel safe maybe.

After a few documented police calls (tell your landlord) they should have to evict them hopefully. Lay low until then.

These Redditors emphasized personal safety and advised avoiding direct contact with the potentially dangerous neighbor

useyerbigvoice − IF the cops come don’t open your door to watch or do anything to indicate you are the one who called.

Don’t engage with that neighbor in any way and good luck!

[Reddit User] − Not to invalidate you, but unless you live in bumfuxk nowhere, the cops willl have more serious things to do tonight, like enforce drunk driving.

Remote_Independent50 − Where I live, you can't make noise past 10. Anything louder than a car starting is illegal. I'd wait till 10:05

Was the tenant right to involve authorities if the fighting continued, or should she have stayed focused solely on protecting herself? And would most people know what to do after hearing the same frightening sounds through their own wall?
