Woman Demands Homeowner Move His Car Because She’s Used to Parking in His Driveway

Some people become so comfortable with an old arrangement that they start treating it like a permanent right. I think that gets especially absurd when the “arrangement” involves someone else’s driveway and the new homeowner has never agreed to share it.

One Redditor in a German village learned this after buying a corner property with his wife. They had already dealt with strangers parking directly on the lawn, but one woman took things even further. She appeared at the door, asked whose car was blocking the driveway, and then demanded that the OP move it so she could park there herself.

Her reasoning was simple: the previous owner did not drive, so she had apparently been using the space for years. When the homeowner refused, she threatened to call the police. Scroll down to see how that spectacularly entitled plan worked out.

A homeowner is stunned when a neighbor demands access to his driveway after years of using the previous owner’s property

'Parking on my property'

I had the most insane conversation of my life yesterday and the brazeness is so bloody funny I had to share it with y'all.

For context: my wife and I have purchased a house with some bigger corner property in a german village from an 87 year old this January.

The close neighbour's are super friendly and we get along very well, have bbqs and so on.

In the past I already had some issues with several people parking on my lawn (insert get of my lawn meme here).

I mean all 4 wheels on the grass, parallel parking, but a quick towing fixed that for good.

Quick side note: I tried to talk with the folks living a street down the road before I called the tow truck

and they told me to suck a big rooster as they have a party and I should live with their guests parking on my lawn.

So back to the story. I was working from home and my door bell rang and in front was Karen.

She looked me up and down and asked in a quite condescending tone who's car is in the driveway blocking it.

I told her it's mine and what the matter was.

She introduced herself (same folks from above) and demanded

I should move my car because she wants to park in my driveway as she doesn't find a good parking spot on the road.

When I asked why she thinks she can park in my driveway she explained that the previous owner hadn't had a car and never noticed that she parked there.

And because she always did that I should make space or she'll call the cops. Told her to pound sand and closed the door in her face.

She actually called the cops but that was resolved quite easily and we had her removed from our property.

The audacity of these folks is just astonishing.

A new home represents a fresh start, but it can also reveal something unexpected: not everyone accepts that a change in ownership means a change in expectations. When people become comfortable with an arrangement that benefited them, they may mistake familiarity for permission. The moment someone sets a boundary, that comfort can turn into conflict.

In this situation, the OP was not simply reacting to a stranger parking somewhere inconvenient. The issue was that a previous informal situation had created an assumption that the neighbor had a permanent right to use someone else’s property.

The former homeowner’s lack of objection may have allowed the behavior to continue, but it did not transfer ownership rights or create an obligation for the new homeowners.

The emotional dynamic is interesting because the neighbor seemed to view the driveway as a shared resource rather than private property. From her perspective, she was continuing something she had always done.

From the OP’s perspective, a stranger was demanding access to property he and his wife had legally purchased. The conflict came from two completely different ideas of what was considered “normal.”

A different perspective is that the neighbor may genuinely have believed she was not doing anything wrong because the previous owner never objected. Long-term habits can create a false sense of entitlement, especially in close communities where people rely on informal agreements instead of written rules.

However, a past arrangement only works as long as the current owner agrees to it. A new homeowner has every right to decide how their property is used.

Psychologists who study territorial behavior explain that physical spaces often represent security, control, and personal identity. Environmental psychologist Robert Gifford’s research on territoriality describes how people use boundaries to communicate ownership and protect spaces they consider important.

When someone enters or uses those spaces without permission, it can create feelings of intrusion because the boundary is being ignored.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s frustration escalated. The driveway was not just a parking spot. It represented the principle that ownership comes with control. The neighbor’s argument that “the previous owner allowed it” ignored the most important factor: the current owners did not.

The practical lesson is that friendly communities still need clear boundaries. Being a good neighbor does not mean allowing unlimited access to personal property. In fact, respectful neighborhoods often depend on people understanding where one person’s space ends and another’s begins.

A previous homeowner’s habits may explain why someone has certain expectations, but they do not create permanent privileges. The kindest relationships are usually built when people ask first, accept the answer, and understand that someone’s home is not a shared convenience simply because it once seemed available.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These users saw the neighbor’s behavior as pure entitlement and refusal to accept “no.”

FaraSha_Au − That is n__cissism waking and talking there. You can bet she'll be back.

kkkkkkk777 − this the kinda delusion u only get when u’ve never been told “no” in ur whole damn life 😭

These commenters recommended physical barriers, signs, or fencing to keep cars off the property

oldfartpen − I had a similar problem, living close to the center of a tourist town. .

Buy some rocks at least 40cm wide, and place them every 2m on the grass along the border… takes care of people parking on your lawn

[Reddit User] − Time for a fence with a gate and some "no parking/no trespassing" signs! !

People are just out of control with their ridiculously entitled behavior.

I had a neighbor actually get mad that I would not let her use my driveway to spread out her garage sale,

because it would completely block my garage doors and I would be able to get out for hours.

Then she wanted me to move MY vehicles out of MY garage that I OWN so "it won't be a problem".

I told her that NONE of that will be happening and I do not want strangers trespassing on my property. Period.

These users joked about shutting down the neighbor’s claims with sarcastic responses

No-Procedure5991 − My smartass brain went straight to

"That last owner is dead, he died when the ambulance couldn't get up the driveway because somebody was parked in it."

G-Knit − Tell her to park in the last owner's driveway.

These Redditors favored strategic parking to make abusing the driveway inconvenient

krakenheimen − The house I own was vacant for months before I bought it.

The neighbor across from me parked 3 of their 11 cars on or in front of my property during that time

(one car in the single lane driveway and two in front per Google Maps).

When I moved in they obviously stopped parking in the driveway.

I politely asked if they could yield the two cars parked in front as a neighborly gesture. “Kick rocks, public street”.   Fair enough.

They also parked 4-5 cars on their lawn.

So I started parking on the street in front of their house around 9pm and on weekends blocking 2-3 of the cars on their lawn from leaving.

We came to an agreement pretty quick.

RedditReader4031 − Park behind them and put your car up on jack stands with the wheels off and located out of sight.

Tell anyone who asks it’s a long term restoration project.

These commenters were stunned that someone would involve police over another person’s driveway

shitz92 − she called the cops on your driveway??

zanderd86 − The a__hole in me would bait her into parking there. Leave the driveway open and as soon as she parks there boom tow truck!

Since you have told her not to park there and the police know she is not supposed to park there its a hard fight for her to win.

Would you install a gate immediately, or would a camera and another tow truck be enough? And who calls the police because a homeowner has parked in his own driveway?
