Pregnant Woman Refuses MIL Newborn Visits After She Turns the Baby Shower Into Family Drama

A baby shower is supposed to celebrate new life, but family expectations can turn it into a loyalty test surprisingly fast. I think that becomes even more painful when the person caught in the middle is watching their own parent prioritize conflict over a milestone that matters deeply to them.

One couple says that is what happened during the months leading up to the birth of their first child. The husband’s mother repeatedly pushed for more control over the shower, argued about who should be invited, and even asked them to move the date because of her work Christmas party.

By the time the event arrived, tensions were already high, and comments from other relatives only made things worse. Now the baby is almost here, and the couple is deciding who gets access during those vulnerable first days. Scroll down to see why “just move on” is not feeling like such a simple solution.

'AITA For Refusing to Let My MIL & SIL Visit Our Newborn?'

My husband (27M) and I (27F) are expecting our first baby in less than two weeks.

Our son is a miracle baby as I was informed by 3 doctors I would be unable to carry a pregnancy.

This pregnancy has been anything but easy on my body but I am grateful for our blessing..

One thing that has made this pregnancy even harder is my mother in law.

The drama all started with the planning of our baby shower. My MIL is a very controlling person. This isn’t an opinion, she says it herself.

I knew she was going to have an issue with sharing the planning of the shower with my family.

I did not want any drama of it being at my families house as opposed to hers so my husband and I decided we would get a small venue to...

The drama started because MIL got upset she didn’t get invitations for people she wanted to invite.

My husband told her it was our party and we are keeping it intimate of who we want there.

She texted the both of us and stated she should be given some ‘grace’ for inviting some people.

This then turned into a bigger fight when she was informed we did not invite his two brothers new girlfriends who we had not met.

(Side note: his brothers are 18 and 19 and had only been with these new girlfriend a few weeks).

She tried demanding we invite them which my husband told her no.

The drama got worse when my MIL asked us to move our baby shower date because it was the same day as her works Christmas party.

We told her we had already placed the deposit on the venue and ordered the invitations.

She then told my husband that both parties were equally important to her

and she will be only able to attend a short amount of time to ensure to makes it to her works Christmas party.

I had never seen my husband so hurt.

After this, my husband told her she was no longer going to be helping with the baby shower to which she responded “maybe it’s best I just don’t come.”

My husband ensured her she was still invited, but that the drama was too much.

This really put tension in the room the day of our baby shower. His mom showed up SUPER late and only stayed for about an hour and left.

My husband was continuously asked the rest of the party why his mom had left and it weighed on him the entire party.

On top of this my SIL was talking about me to members of my husband’s family that even some of my family heard her.

She was saying how I “didn’t go up to them when they got there and didn’t say hi.”

There were also apparent comments from both MIL and SIL about my weight as well.

After all of this, my MIL did not invite us over for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Now that I am approaching my due date she has been reaching out to my husband asking “what did she do wrong for him to not want her in his...

My MIL and SIL really put a sour mood at our baby shower and holidays right after.

I don’t want to say it completely ruined our baby shower but my husband mentally was just not there. He was hurt the entire time and you could see it...

Since she has been reaching out again, I have made it clear that I don’t want to feel anxious or tension after giving birth.

My husband agrees but of course members from his family have opinions and think we should just move on. So AITA?

Few moments make people feel more protective of their peace than the days surrounding a baby’s birth. After a physically difficult pregnancy, the OP is approaching an enormous medical and emotional transition while already carrying months of tension with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

That context matters. She is not simply deciding who gets to meet the baby first. She is asking whether people who recently brought criticism, conflict, and anxiety into important family moments should immediately be invited into one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.

The deeper conflict also seems to involve two definitions of family. MIL appears to view grandmother status as carrying certain expectations of inclusion, while the OP and her husband see access to their newborn as something determined by the parents’ comfort and circumstances. The baby shower intensified that difference.

Attempts to control invitations, pressure over the date, comments about the OP, and withdrawal around the holidays seem to have left the couple expecting tension rather than support. When people repeatedly associate someone with conflict, anticipation alone can become stressful.

A different perspective is worth considering, though. Refusing immediate visits does not necessarily have to mean permanent estrangement or retaliation.

There is an important psychological difference between saying, “You hurt us, so you cannot see the baby,” and saying, “We need a calm recovery period and will decide about visits when we feel ready.” The first makes access to the newborn a punishment. The second establishes a temporary boundary around recovery.

That distinction is especially relevant after childbirth. Psychologist and maternal mental-health specialist Melissa Weinberg notes that postpartum anxiety can be intensified by unrealistic demands and excessive pressure.

Among her recommendations are protecting time and energy, allowing oneself to say no to draining expectations, and deliberately creating supportive boundaries during the postpartum period.

Psychology Today has also emphasized that caring for a newborn creates unusually high stress for couples, making outside support more valuable when it reduces strain rather than adding to it.

The expert perspective helps explain why the OP’s concern should not be dismissed as holding a grudge. The immediate postpartum period may involve physical recovery, severe sleep disruption, emotional adjustment, feeding challenges, and learning how to care for a newborn.

Adding visitors who already make the parents tense can transform a supposedly supportive visit into another responsibility.

At the same time, boundaries work best when they are tied to present needs rather than revenge. The couple could postpone visits, keep early meetings brief, and require respectful behavior once they resume. They do not need to decide the entire future of these relationships before the baby arrives.

The most reasonable priority is simple: the first days should be organized around the recovering mother, the newborn, and the father’s well-being—not around preventing extended family members from feeling disappointed.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These users urged OP to control who is allowed at the hospital and delivery

Careless-Image-885 − NTA. Tell your doctor and nurses that only your husband is allowed in. ...no matter what MIL says.

Do NOT tell them when you go into labor. Do NOT tell them which hospital. Wear your baby in a wrap anytime either is around you.

Go very low contact. Learn to gray rock. Your husband is doing as best he can.

A bit of counseling on how to handle them may help.

CeramicSavage − Have you made it plain mil and sil aren't allowed in the delivery room? Nta

SheiB123 − Let the hospital know that only your husband and people YOU designate are allowed in thedelivery room.

Let everyone know that you will notify them when the baby is born. Then, when you are ready for company, let people know.

Ginger630 − NTA! Why invite people who will just give you anxiety? After child birth is an extremely vulnerable time for a woman.

They won’t be any help. They’ll make snide comments. Tell any relatives their opinions do not matter.

YOU are the parents and can decide who will visit after you have your baby. And I’d block your MIL and SIL.

Let your husband deal with them. You have enough to worry about right now.

These commenters supported strong boundaries and reducing contact with MIL and SIL.

Dragonrider60 − The narcissists have arriven🤣🤣🤣‼️ Tell hubby that she's stressing HIM out, and that affects YOU,

so no contact for the 1st 6 months, or until you feel ok with her interference - I mean, presence ☺️.

ConfusedAt63 − Not at all! Time for radio silence. Limited and even wrong information shared at times.

Like your delivery happening, don’t call for a few days so you have a few days to yourselves.

You are adults and do not answer to anyone. You do not have to share anything you don’t want to, including your baby.

It does not matter what people think or say and shouldn’t.

Being family does not come with the right to be included or intrusive. There is no auto forgive clause and no endless chances clause. You are the boss!

Suggestion: when you are first home from the hospital (for first six weeks minimum) and people are asking to come over to “help “ you,

you ask them very clearly if they are going to come over to help with the baby or be helpful to you.

If they say they want to help you then thank them and tell them to wear clothes they can clean house in.

You will have a list made of the things you need help with when they get there.

If they ask what, you say, general housekeeping like, cleaning the bathroom, the kitchen, sweeping, mopping, Hoover, dusting, folding laundry.

If they are not glad they can help you in ways you need help, then you need to cancel the visit and tell them you do not need help with...

you need help keeping everything else up. No help, they get a short visit, one hour, wearing a mask and fresh clean shirt.

Any more than an hour and it interferes with you keeping up with everything they don’t want to help you with.

Your mother and MIL have both had this experience and to expect and demand they respect you,

give you grace and be helpful like you need is not an unreasonable ask.

You do not have to let either woman tell you what or how to do things if you haven’t asked.

You do not have to share your baby lie it is a toy. It is your turn not their second chance.

CqwyxzKpr − Nothing like boundaries and fafo. Distancing yourself from these behaviors is healthy and beneficial to you and baby. Nta

Suitable_South_144 − NTA and I'm sorry for you and your husband for what MIL and SIL are putting you thru.

They need to be moved to the back burner. No more answering their calls, or visits. Just NO.

And the others who are supporting them, they get the same treatment.

I hope your husband looks into counseling. He's struggled with his mom's issues the longest.

And firmly set your boundaries NOW and don't let anyone cross them. It's your baby, you and your husband make the rules. And congratulations! ! 🎉

These Redditors said OP deserves quiet recovery time before allowing visitors

Greedy_Literature_54 − I would give yourselves 2-4 weeks of NO VISITORS.

You both need time with each other and your new baby, being a Grand or Auntie has no immediate entrance or special access to baby or your home. NTAH

ConsitutionalHistory − Sorry but really sounds like much of this is on you and your husband. Stop leaving cracks and openings for her to enter your lives

Should the couple give themselves several visitor-free weeks, or would one carefully controlled meeting be a better first step? And does being Grandma automatically earn immediate newborn access after months of unresolved tension?
