She Realized Her Friendship Was Built On Drinking After One Sober Visit Changed Everything

by Leona Pham

OP has known her friend for a decade, but their friendship was mostly built around drinking and the lifestyle that came with it.

After moving away and naturally cutting back on alcohol, OP started seeing the relationship differently.

When her friend came to visit, the trip was disappointing.

Between uncomfortable behavior at a bar, constant complaints, refusing to do activities, and what felt like a lack of personal responsibility, OP realized they may no longer have much in common outside of their old habits.

Now she’s wondering if this friendship simply ran its course.

Woman realizes her longtime friendship feels different

not the actual photo

'My friend came to visit me for a weekend and she was so lazy, it was torture hanging out with her?'

I’ve known her for 10 years, we used to drink together a lot and haven’t

really had a friendships outside of that. Now that we’re close to 30 we’ve

naturally started drinking a lot less and when she came to visit (I moved

away from her last September) it was HORRIBLE.

We went out one night and drank a couple of beers, she YELLED at a

woman in the bar because she thought she was homeless (she wasn’t) and

then tried to convince me that the lady was begging for money (again she

wasn’t, I was very sober and aware of what I saw)

The next day she bitched all day about being hungover and slept on my

couch, I was SO BORED. Then the day after (her last day) she again didn’t

want to do anything because she doesn’t like to walk around and prefers

staying on the couch while in vacation to relax. IT WAS SO BORING.

She bitched about being broke but then told me she pays for a massage

subscription, gets her nails done 2x a month, and eats out nightly. She

complained the whole time about her parents and how they ruined her but she takes a lot of money from them???

Needless to say now that I drink 90% less than I used to and have been

around her sober, she is just likely not really a friend for me 😅

Sometimes a friendship does not fall apart because of one dramatic betrayal. It simply becomes clearer when the activity holding it together fades away.

In this case, the woman had known her friend for a decade, but much of that bond appears to have been built around drinking.

Once alcohol became a much smaller part of her life, she was finally seeing the relationship in a different emotional light.

What used to feel familiar now felt exhausting, awkward, and strangely empty.

The visit exposed more than incompatible vacation styles.

The friend reportedly yelled at a stranger, complained throughout the trip, slept off a hangover, resisted doing anything active, and repeatedly vented about money while maintaining several expensive habits.

None of those things alone necessarily makes someone a bad person.

Together, though, they seem to have revealed a pattern of negativity and passivity that the host no longer enjoys being around.

There is also a fresh perspective here: she may not have suddenly discovered that her friend changed.

She may have changed enough to notice what was always there.

Alcohol can act like social glue, especially in friendships where shared drinking creates the structure, entertainment, and emotional rhythm.

When that routine disappears, people sometimes realize they do not actually share many interests, values, or ways of spending time.

That perspective fits this situation well. Ten years of history still matters, even if the present-day friendship no longer does.

She does not need to retroactively decide every past memory was meaningless just because sober companionship now feels disappointing.

The relationship may have been real for the version of herself who existed then.

The most realistic next step is probably not a dramatic confrontation.

She can simply reduce the frequency and intensity of contact, stop planning long visits, and invest more energy in relationships that fit her current life.

If the friend asks why things have changed, she can be honest without cataloging every irritating behavior.

Outgrowing someone can feel uncomfortable because history creates loyalty. But longevity alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Sometimes drinking less does more than change a lifestyle.

It reveals which connections were built on genuine closeness and which ones depended on always having another round.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters agreed that friendships can naturally fade when people grow in different directions

Wrong_Class8040 − Some people you just grow out of. Nothing wrong with that. But yeah, that sounds boring.

PerniciousVim − Totally normal for your age. It's time to shed those 20-

something friendships that no longer serve you. It's part of the process -- enjoy it! ! You're 150lbs or so lighter.

JMOlive − Sometimes people are in our life for a certain season, and it’s okay to let go.

right_hand_lean − Sometimes you just realize that the only thing you had in

common with some people was alcohol. Beyond that, it's even worse when

you find out that aside from that, there really isn't much to the person that

you WANT to get to know anyway so you just kind of grow out of them.

It's a really unfortunate thing, but it happens a LOT in your 30's. Hopefully

you can meet / make some new friends with some interesting hobbies they can include you in.

These commenters criticized being an unmotivated guest and said relaxing is different from making others accommodate laziness

lulgupplet − Yeah see the couch potato thing is me. I dont make people

suffer with my literal boringness. I dont like bars, but i will go try a new

restaurant. I like museums and historical nerdy fun. Also zoos and botanical

gardens are fun. But i often just love to be home, cook and bake, start a new show.

My best friend likes to do that stuff with me but she has her fun group of

friends too. Sounds like she just has a bad personality on too of being super boring Lol.

LotsofCatsFI −  I am all about a lazy couch rot day but typically you do that

at your own home, not as a guest. When you visit friends you usually expect some activities. Agree that sounds boring

No-Fail7484 − 😆😆😆. What a joy to be around! !😆😆😆. Be busy the next time she wants to drop by.

BlastTyrantKM − I just spent the weekend with my parents since I

happened to be in town on business. They kept begging me to stop doing

the dishes after a meal. "We have a dishwasher. Just put them in there,

come sit down and relax" "But Mom, it's 3 plates and 3 forks. It'll take me less than 3 minutes to just wash them.

And I won't use 30 gallons of water to do it" I also made my bed each

morning and wiped down the shower when I was done using it. I can't

understand how guests can be lazy in someone else's house. For reference, I'm a 57yo male

These commenters shared that quitting alcohol changed their friendships and revealed which relationships were based only on drinking

Player-non-player − I had a lots of friends, until I stopped drinking.

CommitteeThink7683 − When I stopped drinking, I realized I had been

hanging out with a group of obnoxious assholes. Sober me could not tolerate being around them.

nihilt-jiltquist − Two things happened when I quit drinking. .. First I outgrew

my friends who were spending their lives in the bar. Now 25 years later, I've outlived them too.

OP’s visit seems to have revealed something uncomfortable: the friendship may have been built more around a shared lifestyle than a deeper connection.

Once alcohol became less central, OP noticed differences in energy, priorities, and how they spend time together.

The bar incident, constant complaining, and lack of effort during the visit made OP question whether the friendship still fits.

Do you think OP is realizing a natural friendship drift, or is she judging her friend too harshly during a bad visit?
