New Mom Refuses To Shovel Snow Days After Birth, And Reddit Immediately Spots The Chaos

Recovering from childbirth is difficult enough without being expected to host dinner, care for two children, run errands, and shovel a huge driveway at the same time. Add a husband who treats all of that as perfectly reasonable, and the story quickly starts sounding like satire rather than ordinary family conflict.

That is the setup one Redditor presented after supposedly giving birth just three days earlier. Her husband wanted his parents welcomed with duck roast, steak, tartare, soup, side dishes, and two pies, all prepared by his exhausted wife. When she discovered heavy snow blocking her car, she asked him for one favor: clear the driveway.

Instead, he argued that she was on maternity leave and should handle it herself, then suggested the physical labor might help with her weight. Keep reading to see how much more ridiculous the details become.

'AITA for not shoveling snow right after giving birth?'

I (21F) gave birth three days ago to a beautiful baby girl.

We got home from the hospital earlier today. My husband (29M) is beyond excited.

He arranged for his parents to come over for dinner and to meet the baby.

He asked me to make a duck roast, potato salad, beef, tartare, squash soup, steak and two different pies, (pumpkin and pecan).

I am really exhausted. And I’m struggling to care for the newborn and our toddler (2M) at the same time. I exclusively b__ast-feed per my husband’s suggestion.

But I agreed to make the dinner because I am a really good cook.

I needed to run to the grocery store to get some ingredients. But my car and our driveway were covered by inches of snow.

My body is really hurting so I asked my husband if he could shovel the snow for me,

and I can then drive to the grocery store with the newborn and our toddler.

(In our household, the children are solely my responsibility because I gave birth to them.)

My husband refused to shovel snow because I am the one on maternity leave

(I am a physics professor at Harvard and they have a pretty generous maternity leave policy)

so I should be the one taking care of all of the household chores.

I know that my husband is ultimately right as he has to go back to working at McDonald’s the next day.

He is a cashier, so he hast to be constantly on his feet.

However, I really didn’t have the strength to shovel snow in the moment. Our driveway is huge.

I bought the house using the money I got from winning a Nobel prize last year.

We don’t hire any help around the house because my husband believes it is my responsibility

as a woman to run things smoothly without wasting money on things that I can do myself.

I asked my husband if he could shovel the snow for me, but he refused and mentioned that my waist had grown over an inch from my pre-pregnancy body.

I used to have a 9 inch waist but now it’s grown to 10 inches. My husband said I could really use shoveling snow as a form of exercise to...

Because I was exhausted and hurting badly. I told him that I won’t go to the grocery store unless he shovel the snow for me.

He became really upset and began calling me a lazy a hole. He claimed that I disrespected him and his parents by not being enthusiastic about hosting.

I feel very conflicted, do I have the right to say no in this case or am I just lazy?

Sometimes the clearest way to expose an unfair expectation is to exaggerate it until nobody can pretend it sounds reasonable anymore. This post does exactly that.

A woman supposedly gives birth three days earlier, comes home to a newborn and toddler, is expected to cook an elaborate multi-course dinner, grocery shop, shovel a huge driveway, breastfeed exclusively, manage every household task, and lose weight, all while her husband insists that maternity leave means she should do more.

The Nobel Prize, Harvard professorship, nine-inch waist, and McDonald’s cashier details make it obvious that the story is satire.

Underneath the absurdity, however, the emotional target is recognizable. New mothers are often surrounded by contradictory expectations: recover physically, bond with the baby, keep the home running, host relatives, feed everyone, return to their previous body, and somehow remain cheerful throughout.

The post exaggerates that pressure into something grotesque enough that the unfairness becomes impossible to miss.

There is also a psychological element here involving normalization. When unreasonable demands are introduced gradually, people can begin questioning whether they are selfish for resisting them.

The fictional narrator repeatedly treats her husband’s expectations as sensible even when they are clearly dangerous. That is part of the joke, but it mirrors a real pattern in unequal relationships: someone can become so accustomed to carrying disproportionate responsibility that asking for basic help starts to feel like failure.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists explains that the postpartum period involves substantial physical recovery and recommends ongoing support after birth rather than treating recovery as an immediate return to normal activity.

ACOG also emphasizes that postpartum care should account for fatigue, pain, feeding demands, sleep disruption, and broader physical and emotional needs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention likewise stresses that serious postpartum complications can occur in the weeks after delivery and that symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, shortness of breath, dizziness, or extreme weakness require medical attention.

That medical context makes the satire sharper. Shoveling snow three days after giving birth is not a quirky disagreement about chores. In a real situation, demanding strenuous exertion from someone still recovering from childbirth could be unsafe, especially when combined with sleep deprivation and newborn care.

The more realistic lesson is straightforward: postpartum recovery is not laziness, maternity leave is not household servitude, and parenting responsibility does not belong exclusively to the person who gave birth. Support during that period should reduce physical strain, not add to it.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These users mocked impossible expectations placed on new mothers by exaggerating them to absurdity

Valuable-Wallaby-167 − YTA I was shovelling snow while giving birth to quadruplets in a blizzard because that's what it means to be a new mum!

You don't get to be lazy and only work 24 hours a day. You have to steal Bernard's Watch and work at least another 18.

Weird_Maintenance185 − YTA. You do realize how tired your husband must be after having to attend your labor+delivery?

+ Being forced to deal with a pregnant woman for long periods of time must have put massive strain on his body.

Why force him to do hard labor after all he's been through? That's just cruel. .. 🙄 what a b__ch.

HealthNo4265 − First world problem.

Here in myCountry, we just squat in the rice paddies, drop the baby, and get back to work. Harvard professor, hah. You people are soft.

These commenters flipped the situation into ridiculous jokes about babies, toddlers, and family responsibilities

Radio_Mime − NTA. You just gave birth. Let the newborn and toddler start earning their keep. /s

Lulu_531 − You are not the a__hole. First of all, as everyone knows, you should not be having visitors until the baby is at least 14.5 years old.

Your in-laws shouldn’t have met your toddler yet.

Additionally, when they are allowed to come, they need to bring enough food to stock you up for 14

more years and they should renovate your house while viewing your teenager from a distance as you hold him or her.

Obviously, you won’t put either child down until HS graduation.

If your husband doesn’t understand this, mommy influencers on Instagram can explain. Good luck!

These Redditors parodied crude AITA tropes by dragging appearance and sex into the judgment

Spoon90 − YTA for not describing your post pregnancy boobs

H0SS_AGAINST − YTA for not using that Nobel money to get a Ariens Deluxe 30 EFI

to blow the snow like you should be blowing your husband for gracing you with child.

These users leaned into absurd gender and family expectations for extra satire.

Overwatchingu − NTA you gave birth to a beautiful baby. Now if you had given birth to an ugly baby that would be a different story.

Edit: YTA. Just noticed you gave birth to a GIRL! ?! it’s your job to give your husband a SON to continue his lineage, not spout out more mouths to...

JoeDelta14 − Info; is your husband a snitch?

GuineaPanda − Didn’t notice the sub and was like this is the least believable thing ever

Do you think couples argue more because of the actual chores, or because they feel unappreciated? How should new parents divide responsibilities after welcoming a baby? Share your thoughts below!
