He Swapped His Co-Worker’s Chair for a Broken One, Then Tried to Take the Fixed Chair Back

Walking into the office and finding your chair replaced with another one is strange enough. Finding out that the replacement is actually more comfortable, but also partly broken, makes the situation even more confusing.

That is exactly what happened to one employee when he arrived at work and discovered that someone had swapped his office chair with another one. The replacement chair was noticeably more comfortable, but one of its armrests was barely attached. Instead of complaining, he decided to repair it himself.

What happened next turned a simple chair swap into an unexpected workplace dispute involving a manager, accusations of disrespect, and one very unhappy co-worker.

He Swapped His Co-Worker’s Chair for a Broken One, Then Tried to Take the Fixed Chair Back

Here’s how the chair drama unfolded.

'AITAH for not returning a co-worker’s chair that he put in my cubical when it was broken but I fixed it?'

So this morning, I walked into my office and when I sat down in my chair, I noticed that it was different. A little bit more comfortable, which was nice,...

I also noticed that one of the arm handles was extremely loose, almost rotating 90 degrees and about to fall off. I looked at the side of the loose handle...

Now I have two options. 1) swap this chair out with someone’s chair in the office or 2)fix the chair and continue to use it.

I decided to fix this new comfy chair. I went into our work area, grabbed an allen wrench, and secured the handle back to the frame. I also tighten all...

An hour passed and Charlie (46M) walked back into the office. The thing about Charlie is he suffers from a TBI from his time in the military.

He some times isn’t always thinking things through, is constantly questioning everything he has to do no matter how simple the task is, and he is always thinking the world...

When Charlie thinks he won a battle/argument/conflict, etc, he gets this smirk on his face that makes you want to punch him.

So when Charlie walked into the office, he had that smirk on his face because he thought he pulled a fast one, but that smirk disappeared when he saw that...

Charlie then brings back my original chair and says “hey man, thanks for fixing my chair. You can have yours back now.” I told him no that this chair is...

Charlie went on to say how he ordered that chair specifically for himself and that he needs it to do his work comfortably.

When I asked for proof that it was bought with personal funds, he said it was bought it through the GSA card for the office.

So, that meant the chair is an office chair and not a personal chair. I also asked why didn’t he fix the chair himself?

Charlie answered he didn’t know how. Which is funny because he’s a maintenance guy and we have all sorts of tools in the work area where he could’ve looked for...

Charlie went on a rant about respect and fairness for a bit before going to the manager’s office. I got called into the manager’s office through a Teams message.

When I walked in, Charlie had that smirk on his face again. When the manager asked why I stole Charlie’s chair, I calmly gave a play by play of what...

Finally, the manager asked “are you willing to give Charlie’s chair back to him?” I answered no because he left it broken in my cubical broken, I fixed it, and...

The manager sided with me and Charlie storms out of the office pissed off at the world. AITAH here?

The employee quickly realized that the chair sitting in his cubicle was not his. He also noticed that one of the arm handles was extremely loose and could rotate almost 90 degrees. One of the bolts had apparently come loose from the main frame.

He had two choices. He could find another chair and swap it again, or he could simply repair the one that had mysteriously appeared in his cubicle.

He chose the second option.

He grabbed an Allen wrench from the work area and secured the loose handle. While he was at it, he tightened the other bolts, checked the wheels, and generally gave the chair a quick tune-up. By the time he finished, the chair was not only functional, but more comfortable than his original one.

As far as he was concerned, the unexpected chair upgrade was a win.

About an hour later, his co-worker Charlie returned.

Charlie apparently had a habit of assuming people were working against him, according to the employee, and he walked into the office wearing a particularly satisfied smirk. That expression quickly disappeared when he noticed the repaired chair.

Charlie then brought the original chair back and casually told his co-worker that he could have his old chair back.

The employee refused.

That was when Charlie explained that he had specifically ordered the more comfortable chair for himself and wanted it back. The employee asked whether Charlie had personally paid for it. Charlie admitted that the chair had actually been purchased using a government office card.

That changed the situation considerably.

If the chair had been purchased with company funds, it was difficult to argue that it was Charlie’s personal property. The employee also pointed out that Charlie could have repaired it himself. Charlie said he didn’t know how.

The disagreement escalated into an argument about respect and fairness. Eventually, Charlie went to the manager.

The employee was soon called into the manager’s office through Teams. Charlie was already there, apparently confident that he had won the dispute.

But when the employee calmly explained what had happened, the manager listened to the entire story before making a decision.

The manager eventually asked whether he was willing to give Charlie the repaired chair back.

His answer was no.

The chair had been placed in his cubicle without his permission, his original chair had been taken, and the replacement had been left broken. He had repaired the replacement and was now using it.

The manager ultimately sided with him.

Charlie left the office furious, while the employee kept the newly repaired chair.

There was also an important detail behind the situation. Charlie had a traumatic brain injury from his military service, and the employee believed it sometimes affected the way he handled situations. That may explain some of Charlie’s behavior, but the commenters largely agreed that it did not make the chair swap fair.

See what others had to share with OP:

Carradee − NTA. Where was Charlie's respect for you and your property when he took your chair and gave you his broken one in the first place? He's flunking basic...

Leucastic_Leopard − NTA. If Charlie ever steals it "back" I highly recommend covertly "breaking" it in the way it was when it was gifted to you. Then just repair it...

Bubbly_Concern_7522 − NTA. Charlie f'ed around and found out.

Status_Reflection993 − No lol. Who steals someone's perfectly good chair, swaps it with their broken one. .

then acts like its all hunky dory cause they want to now return the stolen chair now that the chair they abandoned got fixed. . NTA. that guy is tho....

mcgee00 − Nta, what did he think was going to happen? Hes TA for swapping chairs like he did. Wonder why he choose you.

MyLadyBits − Charlie’s just going to take your new old chair.

BodaciousVermin − Charlie's now known by your manager to have generated some unnecessary office drama. Fairly petty stuff, too. You're certainly NTA. He's a twat.

HamRadio_73 − NTA. If I were the manager I would have reprimanded the complainer and commended OP for repairing company equipment at no expense.

Odd-Elderberry-6681 − I want to feel sorry for Charlie having a TBI, but the behavior you've described makes that kinda hard.

If I were a manager at your company, I would thank Charlie for his service to the country and refer him for mandatory therapy to learn how to not be...

votemarvel − NTA but you realise he's just going to swap the chairs like he did last time.

Reddit had plenty to say about the strange workplace showdown.

One commenter pointed out the obvious question: where was Charlie’s concern for respect when he took someone else’s perfectly good chair and replaced it with his broken one?

Another joked that Charlie had effectively “f’ed around and found out.”

Several people also warned the employee that Charlie might simply try swapping the chairs again when nobody was looking. Others suggested that the manager should have reprimanded Charlie for creating unnecessary drama over office equipment.

The most common opinion was simple: the employee was not the one who started the chair situation. Charlie took the employee’s chair first, left him with a damaged replacement, and only wanted his preferred chair back after someone else had taken the time to repair it.

There is also a broader lesson here about workplace property. If office equipment belongs to the organization, employees cannot necessarily treat it like personal property simply because they prefer using it. The manager’s decision appears to have recognized that distinction.

Final Thoughts

Was keeping the chair petty? Maybe. But the employee did not originally choose the chair. Charlie put it in his cubicle and took the original one away.

Once the replacement was repaired and became more comfortable, Charlie suddenly wanted it back.

In the end, the manager had the final say, and Charlie walked away without his chair. Sometimes the strangest workplace conflicts really do come down to one simple question: who thought they could get away with swapping the chairs in the first place?
