Dad Can’t Get His Son Out of Bed for School, and Strangers Decide He’s the Problem

in Social Issues

School attendance can become a serious source of stress when a child simply refuses to get out of bed, especially when there seems to be no obvious reason for it.

Asking questions, offering help, and explaining the consequences may not be enough when a parent cannot figure out what is really going on.

OP is worried because his son has been missing school once or twice a week, sometimes disappearing from class for an entire week.

He has tried talking to him and even suggested therapy, but his son insists that nothing is wrong.

Now OP is reaching out for advice while trying to balance parenting alone and having very few practical options.

Keep reading to see what happened next.

A single father struggles to get his son back to school after he misses 24 days without explaining why

not the actual photo

'My 10 year old just won't go to school?'

Yes I want him to go to school. He's missed 24 days this school year

I've tried asking him why he won't get up to go to school or if something's

wrong and he just says there's no reason and nothings wrong

I've asked him if maybe he needs a therapist so he has someone to talk to besides me, and he said no it's fine

I've told him that school is important and if he keeps skipping school that

he'll have to repeat the grade but him knowing that doesn't help. I want

him to grow up to be an amazing adult with a job he loves doing

I understand needing a break from school but this is happening once or

twice a week and two times he's been gone for a whole week at a time. I'm

just kind of stuck in a loop. EDIT. I emailed the school asking for help

yesterday, so hopefully they will get back to me on monday

I clearly want him to go to school so I'm not sure why people are assuming

otherwise, im literally on here venting and stressed about it. I have appointments and things I need to get done

I do not have a car and public transportation does not go towards his

school or I would take him there. I cannot afford an uber or id absolutely do

that. He takes the school bus to and from school so after that bus leaves

his bus stop I have no other way to get him there which is the only reason why he stays home

Im a single dad and I have no help at all. Which absolutely sucks. But dont

assume someone's life from one block of text. I'm doing this parenting by myself with health issues

And Im not making excuses, I just have hardly any choices on what to do and it's hard to work with that

I want to say that I am not giving him the option to go to go to school or

not. Sometimes he just won't get out of bed no matter what I do and it's

beyond frustrating. I do not want him to stay home, I want him to go to

school and get a good education, which is why I want advice and help. Im

very thankful for all the nice polite people giving me advice in the comments

I know im not a bad parent, I just have a soft heart because I've been extremely mentally abused as a minor

Few parenting situations are more frustrating than watching a child struggle while being unable to explain what is wrong.

This single father clearly wants his son in school.

Twenty-four missed days, including entire weeks at a time, have left him worried about grades, repeating the year, and his son’s future.

Yet every attempt to ask what is happening produces the same answer: nothing is wrong.

That leaves the father trapped between knowing attendance matters and having no reliable way to get his son onto the bus.

The emotional dynamic deserves more compassion than blame.

The father is managing parenting alone, transportation limitations, his own health difficulties, appointments, and a child who sometimes simply will not get out of bed.

His frustration does not suggest indifference. It sounds more like exhaustion from repeatedly trying strategies that do not reveal the underlying problem.

There is also another possibility worth exploring: the son may genuinely not know why he cannot make himself go.

Adults sometimes assume that children who refuse school have a clear reason they are withholding.

But anxiety, depression, academic struggles, bullying, sleep problems, or other difficulties can show up as avoidance before a young person has language for what they are experiencing.

“Nothing’s wrong” may occasionally mean “I don’t know how to explain it.”

That guidance changes the problem from “How does this father force him onto the bus?” to “What is preventing attendance, and who can help uncover it?”

Twenty-four absences are substantial enough that this probably requires a team rather than one exhausted parent trying harder every morning.

Emailing the school was therefore an important move.

Teachers, counselors, attendance staff, and the school nurse may notice patterns the father cannot see at home.

A pediatrician can also screen for physical, developmental, sleep-related, or mental-health concerns.

The AAP specifically recommends involving medical professionals when anxiety or school avoidance interferes with ordinary functioning.

The father can remain firm that school attendance is expected while staying curious about what makes getting there so difficult.

Consequences alone may accomplish little if avoidance is being driven by distress.

He does not need to solve every part of this by himself.

At this point, asking the school and healthcare professionals to help investigate the pattern is not giving up parental responsibility.

It is using the support system that persistent school refusal often requires.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters argued that the parent needs to take direct responsibility and physically ensure the child gets to school rather than allowing repeated absences

Echo-Azure − He does it because he can! You're letting him just skip school, so he's going ahead and living the kid's dream.

KenzoidTheHuman − You are the parent. Parent your child. Take him to

school. You should also get him into therapy in case there’s something happening that he doesn’t want to talk to you about.

These commenters focused on finding the underlying cause and suggested school accommodations, therapy, structured routines, or specialized support rather than treating the issue as simple defiance

Still_Construction37 − We need more info: what HAVE you tried? taking

away electronics or special events ? Instituting some sort of award system?

When he stays home , always have a big day of chores planned. Have you called the school about bussing accommodations?

In the USA they have to provide bussing for those with disabilities and

when my friend had absolutely no ride and had to go to court for missing

school , at the hearing they agreed to let him take that bus bc there was no other way. So again - what have you tried ? !

discdoggie − Okay, we went through this my daughter’s 10th grade year.

She’s a senior now and preparing for college. She came to me 3 days before

the first day of school (returning in-person after 1 1/2 years of Covid

remote learning) informing me she is NOT going to school. That her (on-

line) therapist told her that I should look into private remote learning.

No, I told her. We are not doing that. I emailed the school and her

psychiatrist. He wrote a note that would give her one month home-bound

instruction where all her teachers came to us every afternoon on rotating

days for them. So each subject was 2-3x per week. Then we set up her

return plan. Our system was a program Effective School Solutions.

She ended up trading in her lunch period for a group therapy class

facilitated by a WONDERFUL counselor who really advocated for these

kids, who had all kinds of special needs…depression, anxiety, garden

variety school refusal, substance abuse issues, ADHD, ASD, LGBTQ, you

name it. Well, my daughter THRIVED. (She has diagnosed anxiety and depression, as well as diagnosed ADHD and ASD.

) Being around 12-15 of her peers going through the same stuff and talking

through it for an entire period 5 days a week did more for her than years of

individual counseling. She returned for the same program the next year,

and this year she’s a peer counselor and involved in extracurricular activities she’d have never dreamed of before.

I think the schools shutting down during COVID affected our kids more

than we want to admit. Now we have to do the work to help them through

it. YOU need to do some hard work. And I get it. When you work full time,

have other children and pets to care for, it all gets so overwhelming. I feel for you.

But you NEED to fight for your kid

These commenters emphasized that a 10-year-old should not be given the authority to decide whether attending school is optional

castorkrieg − You let your kid skip 24 days of school? In France parents

(you) will be dragged in front of the court for n__lect. A 10-year old doesn’t

know if they need a therapist, what kind of parenting is this? You are their

parent, not their buddy, it’s important the kid and you know the difference.

Get him a therapist if you think it’s worth a shot but by the love of a God - put him to school, let him know this is not negotiable.

Candyland_83 − I notice that you posted in a sub called “what should I do”,

then people tell you what you should do, and you’re getting defensive? The

reason they’re putting the responsibility on your shoulders is because it is

your responsibility. You’re the parent. Sometimes as the parent we need to be the bad guy.

Your son wakes up in the morning and says he doesn’t want to go to school.

You ask if he’s sick, you ask if there’s a reason. He gives none. You let him

stay home. You just taught him that school is not important, that you don’t

need a reason to skip school, and that he’s in charge and can do whatever he wants.

OR Your son wakes up in the morning and says he doesn’t want to go to

school. You ask if he’s sick, you ask if there’s a reason. He gives none. You

tell him he’s going to school. He’s going to fight and fuss at first because

you’ve already taught him TWENTY FOUR TIMES that school is not important and that he’s in charge.

It might take twenty four more times to get him to cooperate but that’s

because you, the parent, aren’t teaching him. You might be “telling” him

that school is important. But you are not “teaching” him that it is. That’s

what you need to do. Starting today. Get him dressed and walk with him to school. No more excuses.

jenpatnims − Ok so you say you don't know what to do but you don't seem

to have tried anything at all? The answer is simple- make him go. How does

he get to school when he does go? You escort him daily until he no longer needs it.

You tell him that if he is not at school he does not have free fun time, he

has chores, or reading or school work. You talk to school. You incentivise

going. You get a bank of literacy and numeracy work to do (on paper, not

online) for him to work through. You make being in school preferable to being at home.

He is 10. Most 10 year olds cannot decide for themselves to do the sensible

responsible thing over the what I want right now thing. You have to do it

for him. If he has to repeat a year, it is your fault. You are failing him right

now. It is your responsibility to make him go to school.

These commenters took a much harsher approach

Brock-Savage − Ever heard of a whooping?

Curedbyfiction − All I hear is awful parenting and excuses. Do better. Stop “trying” to GeT HeLp and do your damn job as a parent

InternalCelery1337 − Ive worked with parent that have let kids stayed at

home for years in front of the computer, almost all of them are "too nice"

to force their kids to school. Here is the thing a parent isnt supposed to be

"nice" You are supposed to be the first authority figure in their life and right now you are failing as a parent.

Being nice and big happy family is also required but it cant be the only

thing parent brings to the table. Unless you are sure they are in danger in

school then you are unfit as a parent to let them stay at home like this.

Either you take back the head of the houshold role or surrender your kids future. Its up to you

The father is clearly not asking for permission to let his son skip school; he is asking for help because everything he has tried has failed.

With 24 missed days, the problem has gone beyond ordinary teenage stubbornness, especially when the son refuses to explain what is happening.

Reaching out to the school is a strong first step, but there may be something deeper that he cannot or will not express yet.

Do you think the father is being too lenient, or is he doing the best he can with limited support? What would you try next?
