Man Rescues Topless Woman From Lake, Then Learns She Was Escaping Police

Helping someone who appears to be drowning usually feels like one of those decisions you never need to question. I think most people would act first and worry about the strange details afterward, especially when someone keeps disappearing beneath the water.

One man found himself in exactly that situation after spotting a lone woman struggling across a lake while he was covering his family’s boat. He grabbed a life jacket and flotation cushion, swam out, and helped the exhausted stranger reach his dock. Her first revelation was unusual enough: she was topless and claimed she was fleeing a boyfriend who was “messed up.”

His wife arrived to help, and everything initially looked like a frightening domestic situation. Then a pontoon carrying sheriff’s deputies approached, and the story changed completely. Scroll down to see why the woman suddenly stole the family’s golf cart and disappeared again.

'TIFU by saving a topless woman from drowning?'

So this happened yesterday... my family (wife, kids and in-laws) and I had just returned from a pontoon cruise for the evening.

It was later than usual so I sent the wife up on the golf cart with the kids and in-laws to get them some dinner while I covered up the...

About halfway through covering up the boat, I notice someone halfway across the cove in the water all on their own and she appeared to maybe be in distress.

She wasn’t making progress swimming one way or the other and occasionally going underwater.

There were people on the opposite shoreline yelling at her but I couldn’t tell what they were saying. I yell asking if she needs help and she says yes.

I call my wife and tell her to come down on the cart, someone is in the water and needs help, I’m going in.

I might need help getting the person out. I put on a life jacket and grab the throw cushion from the boat.

I swim out to the person and pass off the throw cushion. She appears out of breath.

First thing she says to me is “I’m topless”. I responsd with “umm ok, but are you okay?”.. I also immediately think to myself:.

1. My friends are never going to believe this.

2. What is my wife going to think with a topless woman swimming to shore with me

She then says she’s running from her boyfriend who is “messed up”. She also asks if it’s shallow enough to touch yet. It wasn’t going to be.

I help her to the dock where my wife meets us. She tells my wife “I’m sorry but I don’t have a shirt on”.

Again my wife just asks if she’s okay and she tells us the boyfriend story again. Sure enough as she gets out of the water she is topless.

But she is carrying a white Tshirt that she quickly throws on.

She then immediately begins running to shore. At the same time we notice a pontoon cruising towards our dock yelling at us.

At first I think this must be her boyfriend chasing her and we are in the middle of some domestic dispute.

They quickly get closer and I realize it’s two sheriff deputies who flagged a pontoon down to carry them across the lake.

As they are jumping onto the dock we notice the girl had just jumped into our golf cart and was riding away on it.

Apparently she was allegedly involved in a string of burglaries and the “boyfriend” she was running away from was the cops.

I had unknowingly aided her swim across the lake to escape and she used our golf cart as getaway.

The cops chased her for awhile through the night tracking her down once more but she escaped again.

We looked all day for the golf cart today with no luck. I notified insurance if the theft around lunch.

About an hour ago someone notified us through social media that it was parked behind a house in a neighborhood over.

So we recovered the cart and it seems ok. They put more warrants out for the suspect and are still looking for her.

TLDR: thought I was saving a topless woman in distress but unknowingly aided a crook in escaping the police.

Few situations trigger instinct faster than seeing someone struggling in open water. The OP did what most people would hope someone else would do for them: he stopped what he was doing, grabbed flotation equipment, called for backup, and went in.

At that moment, he did not know who the woman was, why she was in the lake, or whether the story about her boyfriend was true. He only knew she appeared exhausted and was asking for help.

That is what makes the story so strange. The rescue itself was reasonable. The mistake came from assuming the danger ended once she reached shore.

Her claim that she was escaping a “messed up” boyfriend created a believable narrative, especially when she was already distressed and partially undressed. Then the deputies arrived, the story flipped completely, and the woman drove away in the family’s golf cart.

Psychologically, this is a good example of how people make rapid decisions under uncertainty. When someone appears vulnerable, the brain naturally tries to build a coherent explanation from limited information.

Psychologists call this a form of **heuristic reasoning**: rather than analyzing every possible explanation, people rely on the most immediately plausible one so they can act quickly. In emergencies, that can be useful because hesitation itself may be dangerous.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman’s work on fast and slow thinking describes this distinction well. His research shows that people often use quick, intuitive judgments when time is limited, reserving slower analytical thinking for situations where more information is available. That does not make the first judgment foolish; it reflects how human decision-making works under pressure.

That framework makes the OP’s actions easier to judge fairly. He was not knowingly helping someone evade police. He was responding to an apparent drowning risk. The woman’s later theft and escape were separate actions that he could not reasonably predict while she was struggling in the water.

There is also an important moral distinction here: rescuing someone from immediate physical danger does not require first proving that they are innocent, truthful, or deserving. Emergency aid is about preserving life long enough for the rest of the situation to be sorted out afterward.

The practical lesson is not “never help strangers.” It is to separate rescue from everything that comes after it. Once someone is safe, keep valuables secured, involve authorities quickly, and avoid giving unrestricted access to vehicles or property.

The OP may have accidentally helped a suspect escape, but the original decision to enter the water was still the right one. Sometimes doing the humane thing produces a ridiculous aftermath. That does not make the humane thing a mistake.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors thought the incident was less of a screw-up and more of an unforgettable story worth telling for years

Seventhson74 − You did not f__k up. That's a hell of a story you got now. Totally worth it, wasn't it?

doors43 − I’d be telling that story for the rest of my life lol

This commenter had one simple takeaway from the chaos: owning a golf cart sounded pretty appealing

scotth23 − I wish I had a golf cart.

This user shared a similarly absurd story about accidentally helping someone who turned out to be stealing beer

Johnny_Seven_OMA − I was heading into a Circle K once and saw this guy struggling toward the door with two 30 packs of beer.

So I opened the door and held it for him. Turns out he was stealing them

These commenters emphasized that helping was still the correct decision because the woman appeared to be genuinely in distress

pez_queen − Welp, you did the right thing thinking she was actually in distress. But man what a piece of work she is 😅

Research_Liborian − "I let a lady drown because the whole 'wife vs. another woman's boobs' situation = bad karma, ya know? " -- said no one, ever.

You did the right thing. Obviously the woman has behavioral and psychological issues,

and you can almost certainly add a dollop of drugs (and abuse) to the mix. It's how you act to the least of us that determines who you really are.

These users focused humorously on the bizarre detail that the woman was topless

sleestax − how were the titties?

teapot_party − But why was she topless?

loroller − I'd be looking forward to the line-up. Did they look like those? Those? Those?

This Redditor jokingly treated the entire episode as stereotypical Florida behavior and wanted to know where it happened

SAVAGEtiki − Which part of Florida do you live in?

Would you have gone into the water too, or stayed on shore and thrown flotation while calling authorities? And at what point would you have realized this rescue story was about to become a police report?
