Woman Demands Thanksgiving Dinner Without Preordering, Then Blames Caterer For “Ruining” The Holiday

Holiday catering already sounds stressful enough without someone showing up unannounced and expecting a fully prepared Thanksgiving dinner to materialize on demand. I think the funniest part is when the rules were made perfectly clear from the beginning.

One Redditor grew up helping with a family catering business that briefly experimented with “Thanksgiving in a Box” during the early 1980s. Customers had to preorder complete holiday meals, and pickup day meant hours of loading labeled boxes into waiting cars.

Around noon, however, one woman arrived after seeing her neighbor’s meal and announced that she wanted one too, despite never placing an order. The 10-year-old OP explained that every box was already spoken for, but she refused to accept that answer. Scroll down to see how the owner handled her meltdown and why the hungry kid helping outside had very little sympathy left.

'You should have assumed I was coming to this thing I never heard about! You ruined Thanksgiving!'

I grew up in a family that owned a catering company. One year in the early 80s we tried an experiment:

Thanksgiving in a Box. For this and other reasons we only did it one year then ran screaming in horror.

For whatever price it was like $130 at the time you got a box containing a cooked turkey, stuffing,

mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, salad, dressing, cranberry sauce, rolls, butter, gravy, pumpkin pie.

Each box fed 8 people, buy as many as you wanted. Specify if you wanted to pick it up hot.

Ready to eat, or cold and you'd reheat later.. Pre-orders were required. Not a suggestion, mandatory.

6am on t-day we were there.

Car pulls up, gives us the name, Pack mule me would find the box with that name and load in into the car so they could drive away. Repeat hundreds...

Everybody get your boxes by 4pm so we can go gnaw on bits of dead bird ourselves.

Kid me couldn't stay away from the stuffing we made from scratch and I had to smell it all day long.

Kid me was not increasing in sympathy as the day dragged on.

Around noon a lady showed up and when asked for her name declared it to be "my neighbor got one of these boxes this morning

and it looked so good I came to get one myself.". Kid me: these boxes were all pre-ordered, did you do that?

Lady: no, I just want one

Hungry, getting grouchy kid me with all of the tact 10 year old hungry grouchy kid me could muster: I only have boxes for people on the list.

(And asked the next person in line for their name).. Lady: I need a box, go get me one

Kid me: I'll get the boss when I go in to find this customer's order, I don't know how to process new orders. He will come out to talk to...

10 year old me, craving stuffing, was not terribly diplomatic.. Once in the kitchen I found the boss.

Me: hey dad, some lady isn't on the list but wants a box anyway.

I then gathered up a box, took it outside, told the lady somebody was coming amd got the next name.

My dad had been a drafted for Korea and spent the war doing administrative things for officers who were old and set in their ways since

WWII and was good at dealing with mentally ill mothers of brides, so whatever he said eventually made her go away.

I did get snippets of her crying and yelling about how this ruined Thanksgiving and we had so many there should be extras

and could we sell her ours since she knew we must have some set aside for us.. Eventually I took a box out to another car and she was gone.

As the son if the owner I brazenly raided the freezer and grabbed a couple lumps of the frozen

Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookie dough, wolfed them down and got back to loading cars.

As we wrapped up I snuck into the hot racks and picked a bowl of stuffing and hid in a back corner while I inhaled it.

And I didn't share any with her.

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from doing everything correctly and still being treated as though someone else’s disappointment is your failure. The family in this story had spent Thanksgiving working from dawn, preparing hundreds of meals for customers who had planned ahead.

For a hungry 10-year-old hauling boxes while everyone else anticipated dinner, being confronted by an adult demanding something that simply did not exist must have felt especially absurd.

At its core, this story is less about turkey and stuffing than expectation colliding with reality. The woman saw stacks of Thanksgiving boxes and interpreted abundance as availability. From her perspective, there were clearly meals sitting there, so refusing her probably felt arbitrary.

From the catering family’s perspective, however, every box already belonged to somebody. Selling her another customer’s dinner would simply transfer her disappointment to a person who had followed the rules. Her frustration was understandable; her assumption that the business should solve it at somebody else’s expense was not.

There is also an interesting psychological twist here. What looks like simple entitlement may have been intensified by holiday panic. Thanksgiving carries enormous social expectations around hospitality, family, and providing a proper meal.

Discovering a convenient solution at the last minute may have given her instant relief, followed by anger when she learned it was unavailable. Her declaration that Thanksgiving had been “ruined” could therefore have been less about the catering company itself and more about suddenly confronting her own lack of preparation.

Psychotherapist Ilene S. Cohen, Ph.D., explains that unrealistic expectations become particularly troublesome when people assume something should happen without having evidence or agreement that it will.

When reality fails to cooperate, disappointment can quickly turn into resentment, especially when someone mentally assigns another person responsibility for fulfilling an expectation they never agreed to.

That framework fits this encounter remarkably well. The catering company never promised walk-in availability. Preordering was mandatory. Yet once the woman decided she should be able to purchase a box, the employees became obstacles standing between her and the Thanksgiving she imagined.

Even the family’s own meal became negotiable in her mind. The emotional transformation is fascinating: “I would like one” quietly became “you should give me one,” and eventually, “you ruined my holiday.”

The father ultimately did the sensible thing by holding the boundary instead of sacrificing another customer’s order or his family’s dinner to calm an angry stranger. Sometimes kindness means helping when help is realistically available. It does not require manufacturing a solution at someone else’s expense.

And perhaps the young narrator deserved that hidden bowl of stuffing more than anyone. After hundreds of deliveries and one miniature Thanksgiving crisis, eating it alone in the back corner sounds less like selfishness and more like earned compensation.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These users mocked the woman for blaming others when her own lack of planning caused the problem

turBo246 − So she saw her neighbours box that morning and wanted one for herself/family. ...

She claims y'all ruined Thanksgiving by not giving her a box. ... But. ..that means that she wasn't prepared for Thanksgiving at all, since not getting a box ruined everything....

Pretty sure that means that *she* ruined Thanksgiving by not being prepared or even attempting to be prepared until the morning of. ..

Sea-Programmer6880 − Whew, reading this, I was worried your dad was going to give in to her. I'm glad he didn't.

That would just encourage her to continue being a pimple on the ass of society.

i_was_axiom − we ruined thanksgiving Just lol

These commenters shared customer-service stories about people blaming businesses for ruining holidays

Maximum_Employer5580 − used to deal with something similar. Back in 1997, I went to do customer service work for a major computer company.

People would make orders in November and Dec for their Christmas gift of a computer system to the family.

These computers were built to order so they were subject to supply chain constraints depending upon the parts the customer wanted installed,

so sometimes there would be a 2 week lead time due to a video card or HDD not being available. Yeah they could change it, but it would start the...

Anyway, the closer we got to Christmas, we'd have people calling to find out the status

and we'd tell them the estimated date of shipment and delivery was just past Christmas nothing we could do about it,

since we could not guarantee delivery on a specific date (FTC has a mail order rule that only allows mail order merchants to estimate delivery, not guarantee it),

and there were numerous times a day that we would get yelled at by people telling us that we just ruined their Christmas.

Eventually the company moved all of our customer service to India, and I always wondered how they dealt with that,

but more so how many people would tell them that because they ruined their Christmas, they were gonna come

and k__l their sacred cow yeah people are so damn impatient and if you don't do it THEIR way, then the s__t hits the fan

this is why anyone who has worked retail or even mail order, can easily say the customer is NOT always right

kadyg − I used to work at a high-end grocery store that prided themselves on customer service and finding different ways to problem-solve and leave everyone happy.

We also did a similar advance order holiday meal pick-up BUT we were closed on Thanksgiving. So if you didn’t pick up by Wednesday evening, you were just f**ked.

The number of times I had people call on Wednesday morning trying to order a meal for afternoon pickup is uncountable.

It was also one of the few times I could give a polite version of “You snooze, you loose”. So satisfying!

These Redditors focused on the food itself and shared funny Thanksgiving-related memories

Texasfryebaby − Too funny. Give me stuffing every day.

ExpensiveDollarStore − My kids had friends from all over.

One had come from India and was around for Thanksgiving dinner one year and he loved it so much, he convinced his mom to make the meal the next year.

So the time comes around and I happen to have stopped by for some reason and his mom invites me in - she needs to ask me something.

And she has a box of uncle Ben's stuffing and asks what do do with it.

So I tell her about putting it in the bird for cooking and removing it again and putting it in a bowl. And she looks at me horrified and asks...

These users found the story wholesome and charming, especially the family-business angle

DeiaMatias − We have a family restaurant. My kids will love this story :) We make hundreds of turkeys every year for people.

The kids always help out on those days as well.

We've got one lady who orders 50 from us every year for her employees and she's watched my children grow up.

She used to tip them in candy, now she tips them $50 PLUS the candy. The kids love it :)

longestyeahboiiiever − This was weirdly beautiful. I feel like it could be a short story for kids type thing.

Frankensteins-Kitten − "Mentally ill mothers of brides" absolutely sent me 😂

Would you have offered the woman any last-minute alternative, or simply protected the preorders and sent her on her way? And if someone asked you to surrender your own Thanksgiving meal because they forgot to plan, how generous would you feel?
