Mom Gives Away Her College Daughter’s Bedroom, Then Calls Her Heartless When the Monthly Money Stops

Coming home from college is supposed to feel familiar, even if life has changed a little while you were away.

Finding out that your room has been given to someone else without warning can make that homecoming feel less like a visit and more like being quietly pushed out.

One student experienced exactly that after returning for summer break and discovering that her cousin had permanently moved into her bedroom.

Her mother told her she did not “really” live there anymore because she was away at school, then expected her to sleep on the couch.

What made the situation even harder was that the student had been sending money home every month to help with household bills.

After realizing she was being treated like a guest while still helping fund the home, she made a decision that caused a major family backlash.

Scroll down to see why she stopped the payments and refused to restart them.

A college student stops supporting her mother after returning home to find her bedroom given away

Mom Gives Away Her College Daughter’s Bedroom, Then Calls Her Heartless When the Monthly Money Stops
not the actual photo

'AITA for cutting off my mom's bills after she gave my bedroom to my cousin and told me I don't live there anymore?'

My key was in the door before she said it.

I had just dragged two suitcases up the porch steps after a seven-hour bus

ride home from college. First summer back. I was exhausted, sweaty,

genuinely happy to be home. Then my mom opened the door before I

could and said, "You should've called first. Your cousin is staying in your

room now.". I laughed. I thought it was a joke.. It wasn't.

She had moved my cousin into my bedroom, full-time, while I was finishing

my sophomore year. Not temporarily. Permanently. My cousin had dropped

out of school, needed a place, and my mom gave her my room without a

single text to me. My old desk was gone. My shelves were repainted. There

was a new curtain rod and everything smelled like someone else's perfume.

"You don't really live here anymore," my mom said, carrying the word

"really" like it explained everything. "You're at school.". I asked where I was

supposed to sleep.. She pointed at the couch.

I slept on the couch for three nights while my cousin had my room, my

dresser, and my closet. On the fourth morning I found my old journals in a

box by the back door. She had packed them up herself.

I didn't yell. I sat down at the kitchen table and I said, very clearly, "I need

an actual space here or I can't stay. This isn't okay."

She said I was being dramatic. She said my cousin had nowhere else to go.

She said I had a "whole dorm room" and that I needed to stop making everything about myself.

That word, dramatic, was doing a lot of work. It had been doing a lot of work for years, honestly.

Here's the part I should have mentioned earlier. I had a job since I was

sixteen. My mom had always struggled with bills, so when I started working

I helped. Not because she asked, because I watched the lights get shut off

once and I never wanted that again. By the time I left for college, I was

sending her a hundred and fifty dollars a month. Every month.

Automatically. I kept doing it even from school because I thought that's

what you do for family.. She knew that money was coming in. She had built her budget around it.

After the couch thing, after the journals in the box by the door, I called my

bank from the bus station parking lot and cancelled the transfer. I didn't

tell her. I just stopped.. Three weeks later she called me.. "The electricity

bill is past due," she said.. I told her I knew.. "What happened to the

transfer?". "I cancelled it.". She was quiet for a second, then she said, "After

everything I've done for you?". I asked what she had done for me lately, specifically.. She hung up.

Then she called back and said I was heartless. That I was punishing her. That

my cousin had nothing and I had everything and I was choosing money over

family. She said she didn't raise me to be like this. She brought up things

from years ago, things that had nothing to do with the current situation,

just pulling them into the conversation to muddy it up.

I said, "You gave away my room and told me I don't live there. You can't also

expect me to fund the household.". She said I was twisting her words.

She started calling my aunts. Within a week I had three relatives texting me

about how I was abandoning my mother over "something small." One aunt

said I needed to grow up. Another said my cousin needed me more than I

knew. Nobody asked me what happened. They just carried her version to me like a delivery service.

I told each of them the same thing. "She gave away my room while I was at

school and told me I don't live there anymore. I took her at her word.". Most of them went quiet after that.

My mom eventually called again, softer this time. She said maybe she had

handled it wrong. She said the room situation "could be revisited." She

asked if I could at least cover the electricity.. I said no.

Not because I wanted her to suffer. Because the moment I paid that bill,

the situation would reset. My cousin would stay in my room. I would be on

the couch. And the money would make all of it normal.

I didn't restart the transfer. I found a sublease near campus and stayed

there that summer instead. My mom told a family friend I had "abandoned" her.

The cousin, by the way, moved out four months later on her own. My mom

called to tell me the room was empty now, like that was an invitation.. I

didn't go home for the holidays that year.. She's still telling people I'm

heartless.. AITA for treating a cancelled bank transfer as a response to

being told I no longer live somewhere?. Because I stopped explaining

myself right around the time she packed my journals into a box without asking.

Sometimes the deepest family hurt comes from a sentence that sounds small on the surface.

“You don’t really live here anymore” was not just about a bedroom. For this college student, it changed the meaning of home itself.

She returned expecting familiarity, privacy, and a place that still belonged partly to her, only to find her room permanently reassigned, her belongings packed away, and a couch offered in exchange.

That kind of displacement can feel less like inconvenience and more like being quietly removed from the family structure.

The financial piece makes the situation even more complicated. She had been sending money home since she was a teenager because she wanted to help stabilize the household.

That support was voluntary and rooted in loyalty.

But once her mother said she no longer really lived there, continuing to fund the home would have required her to accept an arrangement where she contributed financially without being treated as someone who belonged there.

Canceling the transfer was therefore not simply punishment. It was a boundary tied to a changed relationship.

There is also a useful psychological perspective here. Family systems often become unstable when one person changes a role that everyone else has come to depend on.

The daughter had become, in part, a financial helper. Her mother may have started treating that contribution as permanent rather than optional.

When the daughter withdrew it, the family reacted as though she had broken an obligation, even though no such agreement had ever been made.

The mother’s response focused less on the daughter’s loss of space and more on the loss of financial support.

Even the offer to “revisit” the room came only after the electricity bill became a problem. That timing understandably made the daughter wary of restarting the transfer.

The healthiest part of her decision was creating an alternative rather than continuing the power struggle.

She found a sublease, supported herself, and stopped arguing with relatives who had already accepted someone else’s version of events.

A home is not only a place where someone sleeps. It is also where they are allowed to exist without proving their usefulness.

Once that sense of belonging disappeared, the daughter was reasonable to reconsider whether she should keep financing the household as though nothing had changed.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors said the mother had no right to expect bills paid after kicking her child out

rocketmn69_ − Tell mom, "Your only family member that lives with you can

get a job and help with the bills. This person helped with the bills when I

lived there. I got kicked out, so I won't be paying the bills. I'm on my own and I need the money do that I can live"

captianjack60 − Why pay for bills where you don’t live? That makes no

sense. Mom needs to learn to be self sufficient.

Cranky70something − NTA. F her. I would have done exactly the same

thing, and on top of that, I would have never talked to her again. Honestly!

Yeah, okay, she carried you around in her body for 9 months and helped

you out until you started making your own money and contributing to the household.

But did she expect you to pay her $150 every month for the rest of your life? Entitled.

macross1984 − I just shook my head when I read your post. Total NTA. Your

mom expected you to support her after she backstabbed you like that? Talk

about entitlement. You did right by cutting her off.

This group joked that the mother demanded independence and then complained when she got it

Brilliant-Fig-7148 − They told you to grow up. You're just being a good child and doing what you're told. 😅😉

Due-Organization9377 − You did good Kiddo! Your mom gotta put on her big girl panties now!

These users sympathized with being unexpectedly displaced and blamed the parent for creating the housing crisis

Tairc − I support you so strongly, you have no idea. Something similar

happened to me; my mom sold our house and moved while I was away for

my freshman year. I returned home for fall break to find the locks changed

and someone else living there. For the next few minutes, I got to stand outside of my former home, and go "Oh.

So this is what homeless feels like. " I blessedly had grandparents that took

me in, and it wasn't a huge issue; I wasn't on the streets. But it's been

decades since then, and my mother still wonders why I've seen her only every 4-5 years since. ...

Tung4BigO − You are NOT T. A. .. The one thing you didn't say is whether or

not you reminded your mother of the fact that your dorm is not available

to you in the summer when you're not taking classes, WHICH IS WHY YOU

CAME HOME. .. Your mom packed up and moved your things out of your

room without saying anything to you. .. SHE IS T. A. ..

These commenters doubted the story’s authenticity and criticized its familiar creative-writing formula

M_Rae-1981 − Obviously it isn’t real and just for amusement just the way

it’s written like a very short story with just the right plot device all the

correct verbiage to entice clicks and aggravate enough to interact wish I

would stop doing it lol obviously if you don’t live there you wouldn’t pay

and no family would blame you once they knew you literally didn’t live there you can’t afford to pay for yourself and her.

Stand_With_Students − OK, so this sub is for fake stories, which is fine.

What isn't fine is that they all follow the same pattern, use the same words

and always include somebody supporting the bad guy in the story. It just isn't interesting any more.

drtennis13 − Good read. Has all the components needed. Conflict,

mistreatment, flying monkeys needing to be set straight. All without going over board A- on the creative writing.

Crown_Princess_263 − Good read. Nosy aunt is there so giving you a B+.

Electronic-Lack-3066 − What makes this story unbelievable is that she

didn’t tell the daughter until she had already humped the 2 suitcases up to the front door. Who DOES that? ?

Being told “you don’t really live here anymore” changed the meaning of that monthly transfer.

The poster had been contributing because she still saw the house as home, but once her room was given away, her belongings were boxed up, and she was expected to sleep on a couch, continuing to fund the household would have meant accepting those terms.

Her mother may see the cutoff as punishment, while others may see it as a boundary with consequences.

Do you think cancelling the money was fair, or should family support continue even after being pushed out?
