Teen Says He Isn’t Into His Girlfriend, Until He Imagines Her as a Man and Everything Changes

Relationships can become complicated when one person is still figuring out something deeply personal about themselves while the other is trying to understand where they fit into that journey. Sometimes, what begins as a difficult confession can also uncover feelings that neither person expected to have.

The OP is an 18-year-old man who has been dating his 19-year-old girlfriend for seven months. She recently told him that she thinks she may be transgender and is considering whether she wants to transition someday. He tried to support her, but after learning more about transitioning, he realized something that left him surprisingly confused.

He may actually feel more attracted to the person she could become than the girlfriend he has known so far. Now he wants to be honest without making her feel pressured into changing her life for him. Scroll down to see what advice he received!

He realizes he may be more attracted to his girlfriend if she transitions, but struggles with how to tell her without influencing her decision

'My(18M) girlfriend (19F) confessed she might be transgender; she’s worried i’m gonna break up with her. how do i tell her i would like her more if she transitioned'

BTW she says girl pronouns for now

I’ve been dating this girl for like 7months now. I gotta be real, i’m not that into her. My hearts never really super in it with any of my relationships.

Idk I have girlfriends because my dad wants me to be dating and wife someone up, and it’s nice to have someone around.

She’s great, really nice and probably the funniest person i’ve ever met.

I try to treat her right and all that, but i feel pretty guilty because I feel like i do romantic stuff just because I have to, I don’t really...

Last night, my girlfriend confessed that she thinks she wants to be a guy. She was crying and i comforted her and stuff.

She told me that she’s felt this way for a long time but she is still really unsure.

I tried to be there for her, and I think i did a pretty good job considering I’m way out of my depths here.

After she fell asleep i researched female to male transgender stuff, read all about it, etc.

I don’t know that much about lgbt, my parents hated all of that and i grew up in a very conservative area (Russia) before moving to USA.

So my apologies if I am not using the right words, please let me know if I said anything wrong.

But I would like to think i’m very accepting, totally cool with lgbt i just really don’t know much about it.

However, when I was researching, I saw that to medically transition genders the people take testosterone and get surgeries and stuff.

And I was just imagining my girlfriend with facial hair and no boobs and all that.

And I found myself just smiling imagining it, it seemed really nice. I was just sitting in bed imagining us doing masculine stuff together.

Ive been wanting to take her hunting, and i imagined us hunting but her as a guy and us like making out and jerking each other off.

And it’s like the hottest thing i’ve thought about, ever. I read that some people have fetishes for transgender people and thats not ok.

I hope this is not that; it’s not that I want transgender people, I just want my girlfriend to be a guy. That sounds gay when I say it like...

In the morning, I asked if she has ever wanted to go on the hormones or get the surgeries.

She said yes and she told me she feels really bad about it, because she dated me feeling this way.

She says she never intended to do anything about it, and she still probably won’t.

She told me a big reason why not is because then we would have to break up because I don’t like guys and she loves me.

I told her I want her to be happy and live as her true self.

I didn’t really say anything about the breaking up part. I think she assumes that means I will break up with her if she decides to actually transition.

How tf do i tell her i want her to transition and get surgeries?

Obviously I don’t want to push her one way or the other, it’s all her decision to make, but she is clearly already basing her choices at least partially on...

Sometimes the most confusing feelings arrive when attraction, love, identity, and expectation suddenly overlap. A person can discover something surprising about themselves without immediately knowing what it means, and that uncertainty can be especially intense when someone they care about is involved.

The OP’s situation is complicated because he is not simply reacting to his girlfriend coming out as potentially transgender. He has also realized that his attraction may be stronger toward a masculine version of her, while admitting that he has never felt deeply invested in his previous relationships. That creates two separate questions.

He needs to understand what he wants from a relationship, while his girlfriend needs the freedom to understand who she is. His excitement about imagining her as a man may be meaningful information about his own attraction, but it cannot become evidence that she should transition.

Even with good intentions, telling someone that he wants hormones or surgery could place enormous emotional pressure on an already uncertain person.

There is also a fresh perspective worth considering: the OP may be discovering that the problem isn’t simply that his girlfriend could become a boyfriend. He may be learning something about his own sexuality and what kind of relationship feels authentic to him.

Being attracted to a particular transgender man would not automatically dictate a specific label for him. Attraction is personal, and he does not need to solve his sexual identity in the same conversation in which his partner is exploring gender.

Psychologist Walter Bockting, PhD, has explained through the American Psychological Association that transgender people do not all follow the same transition path.

Some transition socially, some pursue hormones or surgery, and some do not transition medically at all. He emphasizes that psychologists can help people explore and affirm their gender identity while also helping loved ones understand the process.

The APA similarly advises people not to assume that being transgender means someone wants particular hormonal or medical treatments, because each person’s transition is different.

That is probably the most important distinction for the OP. He can absolutely tell her, “If you discover that you’re a guy, I won’t automatically stop caring about you.”

He can even honestly explain that he has been thinking about his attraction and that imagining her as masculine surprised him in a positive way. What he should avoid is framing testosterone, surgery, or transition as something he wants her to do for the relationship.

His girlfriend needs room to ask herself, “What do I want if nobody else’s relationship depends on my answer?” The OP deserves that same freedom when asking, “Who am I attracted to, and what kind of relationship do I genuinely want?” Those questions can coexist without either person having to provide an immediate answer.

There is one other issue that may deserve attention: he admits he is dating largely because his father expects him to have a girlfriend and eventually marry.

That sounds separate from the transgender question, but it may be the most important revelation in the entire post. Before trying to help his girlfriend decide whether to transition, he may need to decide whether he is genuinely choosing this relationship at all.

Supporting someone does not mean steering their identity toward the version that makes the relationship more exciting. Sometimes genuine support means saying, “I care about you enough to let you figure yourself out, even if neither of us knows what that means for us yet.”

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters urged him to reassure her while letting her gender journey remain independent of his feelings

starwaterlily − First of all, don’t worry about everyone in here trying to give you a label.

You two can take time to discover and work through your identities together and separately,

it’s nice to be in a supportive relationship for that, but you don’t have to start using a gay or bi label if you’re not comfortable.

I think you can share some of what you did here, but be gentle about it.

Tell her that you’ve done research to try and support her, and that when you imagine being together through a transition,

you’re very okay with it and still attracted to her.

Tell her you’re happy to stay with her and support, and that you can discover your new form of relationship together.

Be clear that she should make her decisions based on what’s best for her, but you support and want to stay with her.

Do be prepared for medical transition to take a long time, and don’t expect her to start to look or act a certain way.

She won’t necessarily like hunting just because she’s transitioning!

By the way, it’s great that you’re able to shake off some of the conservative influences and support the community. Best of luck!

Alternative-Knee-765 − Just tell her that if she transitions you will love her and support her just as much as before. Then leave the rest to her

white-as-styrofoam − she should make any and all decisions about her gender independent of you.

if you’re attracted to her at the end of that, cool! if not, break up and hopefully stay friends so you can go hunting together.

and it’s ok to be gay if you are! or bi or whatever!

my ex-girlfriend was a russian lesbian, so i definitely know how much that culture tries to stifle queerness,

but… you have to accept yourself. try to figure out what you’re into first, and let the labels come second. <3

These Redditors teased or encouraged him to reconsider his sexuality based on his attraction to her as a man

angelbabydakota − ‘i’m not gay but i want my girlfriend to be a guy’ this is comedy

Bitter-Unit-905 − dude you're gay

ElectroByte15 − Why are you so sure you aren’t gay?

If you’re truly as open minded as you claim, maybe reflect on why you don’t feel you connect with women in that romantic

or even s__ual way, but do when you imagine her being a guy?

These Redditors suspected the post was fake, joking that its premise sounded too absurd to be genuine

Will_Thug − This has got to be a fake post

hayitsmejam − This can’t be real

NoYoureAPancake − This is an A-tier s__t post and I commend you for it

makeoutallie − it's ok to be gay, i know it's really frowned upon in Russia 9at least from what I've seen Putin say) but you're in the US now, be...

Should he tell her that imagining her as a man made him feel more attracted to her, or could that unintentionally pressure her? And does attraction have to come with a label before it can be understood?
