MIL Gets One Private Hospital Update, Then Turns It Into a Pregnancy Emergency for Everyone on Facebook

in Social Issues

Medical scares during pregnancy are stressful enough without suddenly discovering that private information has been shared with an audience you never agreed to involve.

When someone exaggerates the situation publicly, concern can quickly feel more like a violation of trust.

One pregnant woman experienced that after waking with severe abdominal pain and going to the hospital for testing.

Her husband sent a cautious update to a few close relatives, explaining that doctors were not overly concerned and that they would share more when they knew something.

Less than an hour later, however, his mother posted a far more dramatic version on Facebook, suggesting that both the pregnancy and baby could be in serious danger.

The couple immediately asked her to remove it, only to receive unexpected pushback.

Scroll down to see why this incident may permanently change what information the MIL receives.

A pregnant woman’s hospital scare becomes public after her MIL shares alarming details online

'My MIL shared my medical emergency publicly on Facebook to get attention for herself?'

Throwaway account and my first time needing to post here.

I (29F) am 5 months pregnant with our first child and on Friday night

(technically Saturday morning) I woke up at 2am with some cramps and

tenderness in my lower abdomen. It got progressively worse over the next

30 minutes and I finally woke my husband (30M) to tell him I think we should go to the hospital.

Because it was the middle of the night, my husband waited until 9am to

inform any family about the situation. He texted his parents, my mother,

and his sister that I was in the hospital getting some tests done, but the

doctors don't seem too concerned and he'll reach out once we get more

info. About 45 minutes later, his aunt texted him that she was hoping for

the best. Then his other aunt texted him. His sister called him and warned

him that my MIL posted on Facebook "My daughter in law is in the hospital

in serious condition, please send thoughts and prayers to my unborn grandbaby. We may lose him or her!"

When my husband got off the phone, he left the room and I could hear him

talking down the hall. When he came back, I asked him what was up and he

said he'd tell me later once we know everything's ok.

It turns out a section of my intestines is inflamed and that was causing

what felt like cramps. I'll need to follow up with my GP as it could be a

chronic thing, but it's not related to the pregnancy and shouldn't affect it

at all. Thankfully, baby is ok. :) I was discharged just after 1pm and when we

got home my husband told me what happened. He had left the room to

call her and tell her to take the post down and she said it's her Facebook and he can't control what she posts.

I texted my MIL, "Please remove the post about me. It is a major breach of

trust to disclose this medical incident without my consent, especially to do

so as publicly as you did. [Husband's name] and I are very private people

and we'd appreciate not having our personal information posted on

Facebook. Please let me know when you've removed the post." She didn't reply, but the post is deleted.

My MIL later called my husband and told him I sent an incredibly rude text

to her and he said he read it before I sent it and it wasn't rude, it was accurate.

We're both annoyed and frustrated, but also really hurt that she used what

could have been a tragedy to get attention for herself on f__king Facebook.

My husband is going to call her in a few days, after everyone calms down,

and tell her we don't want her disclosing any information about us or she

won't get any info in the future. He haven't had the "no photos of LO on

social media" discussion with family yet, but he's going to address it then. Wish him luck!

Few things feel more vulnerable than being in a hospital while pregnant, especially when the outcome is uncertain.

The OP was dealing with fear, physical pain, and the possibility that something could be wrong with her pregnancy.

Instead of being given privacy during that frightening period, her medical situation was publicly announced before she had even left the hospital.

Her MIL may have intended to ask for support, but the impact was very different.

The information belonged to the OP and her husband, and they had not consented to having it shared.

The emotional conflict goes deeper than one Facebook post.

The MIL appears to have interpreted the situation through her own role as an excited grandmother, while the couple experienced it as a deeply personal medical emergency.

That difference matters. When someone becomes emotionally invested in an event, they can begin treating information surrounding it as if it belongs to the entire family.

Pregnancy can intensify this tendency because relatives may feel that an impending baby gives them a kind of collective ownership over the experience. But excitement does not erase privacy.

A useful psychological concept here is “boundary turbulence,” where one person’s expectations about access to information collide with another person’s expectations of privacy.

She did not insult her MIL, publicly embarrass her, or demand an elaborate apology.

She identified the specific problem, explained why it violated their privacy, and asked for the post to be removed.

The fact that the MIL characterized the message as “rude” may reflect discomfort with being confronted rather than evidence that the message itself was inappropriate.

The husband’s involvement is particularly important. Rather than allowing his wife to handle his family alone, he immediately supported her and later confirmed that the message was not rude.

That creates a united boundary around information about both parents and their future child.

Their plan to restrict information if the boundary is violated again is also more constructive than trying to police every post after the fact.

Going forward, the couple would benefit from treating personal information as something shared by permission rather than by default.

Medical emergencies, pregnancy updates, birth details, photographs, and information about the baby can all remain private until the parents decide otherwise.

Family members may feel disappointed, but disappointment is not the same as being wronged.

The larger lesson is simple: being related to someone does not automatically grant access to their private life.

The MIL can be excited, worried, and eager to ask for support while still respecting that the OP gets to decide who knows what.

If she wants to be trusted with sensitive information after the baby arrives, respecting that boundary now is probably the best place to begin.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors urged OP to keep MIL uninformed about labor, birth, and other sensitive details

northern225 − Word of advice, don’t tel MIL when you go into labour, the

name, or any other piece of information you don’t want public. Her

response shows she is unrepentant and will likely do it again.

Your husband should definitely speak with her and make it clear nothing is

to be posted without your consent and he should follow up with a text

after so she can’t claim he never said it. He’s the son, you shouldn’t be the one messaging or enforcing boundaries.

KGG9K − Don’t even tell her when you’re in labor. She will announce your

baby’s birth the moment your baby is born, before you can tell those close to you!

Katiew84 − Why would you even consider giving her information going

forward? She already lost that privilege. Also, do not tell her when you’re in

labor. In fact, cease all contact with her around 2 weeks before your due date. ALL CONTACT.

This way, when you do go into labor and you’re unreachable she won’t be

tipped off by not being able to reach you and your husband. She will share

your birth news before you can. Don’t give her the opportunity to do so.

Background-Place-795 − “MIL I’m not rude. I’m just not prioritizing your

comfort. ” 1000% info diet. She’s already proven she can’t handle

information without defaulting to Main Character Syndrome. I wouldn’t tell her when you’re in labour, either! 🙄

These commenters backed putting MIL on a strict information diet because she cannot respect privacy

buckeye-person − we don't want her disclosing any information about us or

she won't get any info in the future. The time to stop giving her

information is now. Some boundaries don't deserve a 2nd chance. It isn't

like you will never see her again, you just wont give her sensitive

information. Stop telling her important things now, not after she does it again.

InviteAmazing − I have an idea. Going forward don't tell MIL anything that

you don't want blasted on FB. She obviously cannot be trusted.

Lindris − And this is how she gets to be last to know anything.

Friendly-Channel-480 − Don’t tell her anything important ever.

10e32K_Mess − OP, I’m glad everything is ok. He might not be able to

control what she posts, but both of you can control the amount of

information she receives. She doesn’t care about your privacy and will most

likely continue to post what information she receives but she’ll just hide it

from you. Going forward, I wouldn’t give her any information. She’s lost that privilege.

These Redditors suggested DH clearly explain the no-posting rule and reinforce consequences for violating it

naranghim − she said it's her Facebook and he can't control what she posts.

Welp, she's just put herself at the bottom of the list when it comes to

finding things out. "Why was I the last one to know! " "Because you told us

we couldn't control what you put on your Facebook page.

This is the natural consequence of that because we don't want you blabbing anything. "

l00zrr − If she thought the text you sent was rude, boy is she weak and

immature. He can call her and let her know its easy no posts, no sharing of

info or no sharing of info. She will be the last to know.

These Redditors warned that MIL’s current behavior could become worse after the baby arrives

Theslowestmarathoner − If this is the starting point with her this is going to very very bad very fast when the baby comes

Flat_Werewolf_3569 − So your husband said that the doctors aren't too

concerned, but she posted like your near death. This woman is not ok.

A frightening hospital visit was already stressful enough without discovering that private medical information had been turned into a dramatic Facebook announcement.

The bigger issue wasn’t simply that MIL shared the news, but that she exaggerated the situation and then defended her right to post instead of recognizing the breach of trust.

Setting firm information and social-media boundaries before the baby arrives seems especially important now.

Do you think limiting what MIL is told is justified, or should she get another chance to respect their privacy?
