Woman Survives a Brutal Attack, Then Struggles With the Fact Her Partner Froze While Watching It Happen

by Leona Pham
August 28, 2026
in Social Issues

Trauma can change how someone sees not only the person who hurt them, but also the people who were standing nearby when it happened.

Even when the body’s freeze response is real, the emotional aftermath can still leave deep questions about safety and trust.

One woman is struggling with that after surviving a brutal attack by a neighbor who allegedly lured her outside by cutting the power and then assaulted her with a baseball bat.

Her partner witnessed the attack and initially froze before eventually pulling her back inside to safety.

The neighbor is now awaiting trial, but the poster is left dealing with both the physical trauma and resentment toward the man she expected to protect her.

Things became even more complicated when he asked her not to tell others how he reacted.

Scroll down to see why she is trying to separate what he could not control from what happened afterward.

A woman questions her trust in her partner after he freezes during a violent attack on her

'AITA for being angry that my partner "froze" and didn't fight back during an unprovoked attack on my life?'

I (34F) am struggling deeply with how my partner (44M) reacted during a

literal life-or-death situation, and I need outside perspective.

Recently, I was the victim of an unprovoked, attempted m__der by my

neighbour. I do not know this person, and we have never spoken a single word to each other.

He intentionally turned off my electricity from the outside breaker box to

lure me out. When I went outside to check the box, he was waiting for me

in the dark with a baseball bat and brutally attacked me, attempting to k__l me.

My partner was standing right there and witnessed the entire thing. During

the attack, he did not jump in, yell, or react to defend me. He completely

froze. Eventually, he grabbed my hand and dragged me back inside the

house to safety, but it felt like a lifetime passed before he did anything..

The police were called, and my neighbour is currently in prison awaiting trial.

While I survived, I am deeply traumatised. On top of processing the horror

of the attack itself, I am feeling an immense amount of resentment and

anger toward my partner. I feel incredibly let down, unsafe, and

unprotected. I keep thinking he should have done more to save me, even

though I know the "freeze" response is a real physiological reaction to shock.

Am I the arsehole for thinking he should have done more and feeling like I can't trust him to protect me now?.

EDIT

He did ask me to not mention to family or friends about how he froze as it makes him look bad” my

Family ask “where was he” and I have to tell the truth I can’t lie to them because it’s the truth!.

UPDATE

This Reddit post has actually helped me understand his reaction a lot

better and how he feels about not wanting people to know. I’ve told him

ive made this post and told him how a lot of people understand how he

reacted a lot better than him and I. He asked me how i felt about it and I

explained that i could forgive him for his freeze response but that he needs

to show me in a big way that he can’t change details to make himself look

better. He also needs understand the gravity of my feelings through all this

and how im still recovering, him having his son to help me out when im in

pain would he a start, he needs to show me bit by bit that he is a man that

could come back from all of this. He couldnt prevent the freeze and i cant

prevent how i feel about it happening. I think it’s just so raw and so many

emotions involved. I think a lot of work could save us but it really would

need to be a lot of work. Im gonna just try to focus on my own trauma and

he is gonna work on his, whatever happens later down the line remains to be unseen

There are moments when surviving the danger is only the beginning.

Afterward, the mind often returns to every second, searching for the moment when someone could have acted differently.

For the OP, the attack itself was terrifying enough, but another wound followed it: the realization that the person she expected to protect her stood frozen while she was being assaulted.

Knowing intellectually that freezing can be involuntary does not automatically erase the emotional experience of feeling abandoned.

At the center of her anger is probably something deeper than disappointment.

Her sense of safety was violently destroyed twice in the same moment.

A neighbor suddenly became dangerous, while her partner unexpectedly became unavailable when she desperately needed him.

Meanwhile, he may be carrying his own shame after discovering that his instinct under extreme threat was not the heroic response he imagined.

Those two experiences can exist together. He may genuinely have been unable to control his initial reaction, while she can still feel frightened by what that reaction revealed.

There is also an important distinction between what happened during the attack and what happened afterward.

Freezing may have been automatic. Asking her to hide that part of the story was not.

His request may have come from embarrassment rather than manipulation, but it placed another burden on someone already processing severe trauma.

She should not have to rewrite her experience so another person can feel less ashamed.

Forgiveness and restored safety are different processes.

Her update recognizes that nuance surprisingly well: he could not choose his body’s first reaction, and she cannot simply choose away the fear and resentment that followed.

What matters now is less whether he can prove himself through one dramatic gesture and more whether his behavior afterward becomes consistently supportive.

Practical help, patience with her physical recovery, honesty about what happened, and willingness to address his own shame would mean far more than pretending the incident never occurred.

Their relationship may recover, or it may not. For now, she does not need to decide its entire future.

Recovering her own sense of safety deserves to come first.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters urged professional trauma therapy, noting that unexpected attacks can trigger involuntary freeze responses

Pristine-Mastodon-37 − This is something that you need to work through

with a professional- I don’t mean that in a n__ty or flippant way. You

experienced a deep and horrible trauma and its ripple effects are beyond

Reddit’s pay grade. But NTA, you get to feel what you feel.

I am so sorry you experienced this and I hope the perpetrator is brought to

justice and you find a way to feel safety and peace again.

Bird_Brain4101112 − Please seek therapy to follow up. You say this was an

unexpected and unprovoked attack and the freeze may have been because

his brain was struggling to process what was happening. He did eventually

get you out of the situation which means he has to have important in the

attack at some point. It’s also impotent to know how long this all lasted.

This was unexpected and unprovoked sink the whole incident may have

lasted 2-3 minutes which is a VERY long time when you’re being attacked

but even a 30 second freeze would feel like an eternity.

Ok_Job_9417 − Feelings are complicated. Flight, fight and freeze are the

most common responses to situations. How he acted was completely

biologically/mentally normal. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to accept. I think you should unpack this with a therapist.

indipit − It would really help you to speak with a therapist before you make

any life altering decisions. The anger you are pointing toward your partner

may be redirected anger that should be pointing toward your assailant.

You're partner is just a physical, close reminder of the incident and the fact

that he could not help immediately exacerbates your anger.

It would be interesting if you could find out exactly how long the attack

went on. I had to deal with a dog viciously attacking my dog during a walk.

A neighbors camera got the entire footage. From start to finish, it was only 46 seconds.

After that 46 seconds my dog had been bitten 3 different times, had 6

massive hole in her body, lost the use of her right front leg and had her left shoulderblade broken.

I was helpless to get the dog off, and it took me 20 seconds just to think of

the correct response and grab the other dog by the hind legs and wait for a

chance to remove it. It felt like forever. Your partner may not have frozen

for that long, he was just as surprised as you were.

Your neighbor, on the other hand, knew exactly what his plan was and

didn't have to stop to think of what to do. I'm so sorry you had to go

through this nightmare. I hope your neighbor is put away for a long time.

I also suggest you and your partner enroll in some sort of self defense class

and get whatever personal protection you can and practice using it. The

only good defense to a surprise attack is muscle memory, where you have

practices what to do for SO long, it's second nature to do that.

AmnesiA_sc − In the military, you always send at least one experienced

combat vet with a squad of soldiers. This is because even though they have

months-years of full time combat training, when lives are on the line

freezing still happens. People will actually have a bomb go off, hear bullets

flying, and then step out of the vehicle, stand straight up  and look around.

Somebody experienced needs to see that and snap them back to reality, at

which point we hope that the countless hours of drills will kick in and

autopilot will mean combat effectiveness. You also get soldiers and police who freeze up behind cover.

It looks cowardly as hell, and IMHO kinda is, but in their head they're trying

to make sense of a situation and their brain is telling them to stay safe

while they think it through. Most men want to think they're tough, think

they're the protector when s__t hits the fan, but we're all human.

If trained combatants can freeze up, it's more than reasonable for a civilian to freeze up in an unexpected situation like that.

The alternative could be that you're married to a combat vet who is ready

to shed blood on your behalf at a moment's notice but also wakes up in the

middle of the night fighting for his life against ghosts and who can't function in society.

You can be a well-adjusted person or you can be an always-alert k__ler, but

you can very rarely be both. Of course you have every right to feel

disappointed by it, you counted on him to do something you both believed

was his job. I also agree that him asking you to lie about it is an incredibly asinine thing to do.

He needs to get therapy and own his actions. I was also in a situation once

where some people followed me to my car at 11 PM after work, dragged

me out of the car, and beat me to the point I thought I was going to die or have permanent damage.

Security camera footage showed it lasted about a minute, but it felt like 10.

I spent years trying to compensate, make sense of it, find someone to

blame, plotting revenge, etc. After that, I started carrying a knife and crowbar in my car.

A guy tried to get out of his truck like he was going to fight my wife over a

parking space and I just kind of blacked out: I can remember it through a

haze, like I can remember my emotions more than the confrontation, but I

just opened my door, grabbed the crowbar and was ready to end this dude

when his wife shouted for him to get back in the truck and they drove off after he yelled "He's got a stick!"

in this panicked voice. My wife said she felt safe, a witness said I was in the

right, but I felt horrible about it. I looked calm and calculated but I wasn't

even home in my head, I was scared and lashing out. I could've killed

someone that day over a parking spot because I wasn't dealing with my trauma properly.

PugglePack83 − Trauma therapist here. We can help. The reality is you

won't look at your partner the same. 95% of the time its over from my

experience. There is he didn't do anything and he didn't do enough.

These commenters argued that OP’s deeper concern is his response afterward, especially his focus on reputation rather than supporting her

jerseysaidmaybe − It’s a legitimate response to freeze and it’s a legitimate

reaction to no longer be interested in a relationship with this person. It

says more to me about his character that he is actively asking you to not

seek support from others because of his image. It would be one thing to

freeze, apologize, and empathize with the situation and how you are feeling.

He just straight up is worried about himself and his image as a man. I

couldn’t be with a person who can’t even protect me emotionally.

Lepardopterra − You have been through something horrific and now you

are being told to ‘be the bigger person’ and not tell your truth because if

will reflect badly on a bystander. No. He shouldn’t ask this of you and you

should talk about your ordeal whenever, however and to whoever you feel like telling. It’s selfish of him to ask you to clam up.

You guys will probably break up. You won’t know if the next one is any

better, because you can’t know until they are tested. TBF, many men will

freeze when it comes down to it. I urge you (and every woman) to take self

defense classes because you truly have only yourself to rely on.

Zealousideal_Gas_453 − The fact he also wants you to change the story of how he reacted is ludicrous, bloke is a clown get rid of him

These Redditors shared experiences where a partner failed to protect them during frightening situations, leaving lasting doubts about the relationship

metrogypsy − I'm sorry this happened to you. While your trauma is much

worse, I experienced a similar outlook to my husband from a situation I was

in. It was my due date, so I was extremely pregnant, and I went for a walk in

my neighborhood ("the hood", that my husband pressured me into moving to).

A car started stalking me, looping around the block to follow me more. ..

eventually he ran me off the road and into someone's yard. I think he

wanted me to stop to see that he was masturbating. When he drove

forward agian, I called my husband and explain the situation. He says "I don't have shoes on".

I said "I don't give a f__k, come NOW" I continue walking towards my house,

I turn the corner, and I see him tip-toeing barefoot down the hill. What an

absolute worthless i__ot. I actually don't think I'll ever forgive him. At first I

told the story like it was funny, but it's not. I know I'm on my own.

So, while I have no help, I have solidarity. I realize he does nothing to

protect me or keep me safe or secure in any aspect of life besides our

romantic relationship. As I get older, I realize I have a good boyfriend but a

s__tty husband. He does not provide safety or stability.

I have no advice as your situation would probably lead me to divorce him. Therapy is a good start.

DollySheep32 − Look up the lady who divorced her worm of a husband who

ran away from a pit bull actively attacking his niece and nephew. Maybe they could bond over being absolute dirt. NTA.

The attack itself was traumatic enough, but the aftermath exposed a second problem: trust.

His freezing may have been an involuntary survival response, yet asking her to hide what happened so he would “look better” understandably made the wound deeper.

Her update shows a more balanced view now.

She can recognize that he may not have controlled his initial reaction while still expecting honesty, accountability, and support during recovery.

Do you think this relationship can rebuild trust, or has the sense of safety been changed permanently?
