Woman Uses Breaking Up With Her Boyfriend as a Weight-Loss Reward After Months of Resentment

Sometimes, staying in a relationship can become harder than leaving it, especially when the feelings have disappeared long before the relationship officially ends. Knowing that someone is kind and cares about you does not automatically create attraction, compatibility, or a reason to stay.

The OP has been dating her boyfriend for about a year, but she admits that her romantic interest faded only a few months into the relationship. Despite being successful, attractive, kind, and deeply invested in her, he has become increasingly difficult for her to feel attracted to.

Rather than ending things immediately, she has been using the prospect of a breakup as motivation while working toward her weight-loss goal.

Along the way, she has become increasingly frustrated by his behavior, their lack of chemistry, and several other incompatibilities. Now she is counting down the final pounds before making a decision she knows will hurt him. Scroll down to see what happened next!

She knew months earlier that the relationship was finished emotionally, but kept postponing the actual breakup

'I’m so turned of by my boyfriend that I’m using breaking up with him as my “Weight-loss reward”'

I know it’s cruel, I know it’s mean, but it’s given me more motivation than I’ve had in years.

After a year together, I’m nearly at my goal weight. I knew I stopped being interested in him after the first 4 months. I know I’m not a good person.

My boyfriend isn’t a bad person. He is sweet, gently, and kind. He is probably the most handsome man I’ve dated. He’s rich and in shape.

He likes me a lot. Everything should be good on paper. But I don’t think I’ve ever been as turned off in a relationship as I am right now.

I’ve tried working on it, taking time to my self, etc but nothing really works. Every time I even attempt to bring up a breakup he just cries.

He has to be one of the dumbest people I’ve ever met. He is mid 30’s, I’m mid 20’s. We went to a trivia thing at a bar two weekends...

He rolls the EASIEST question, “who was the first black president of the United States”? Completely sober. His answer? Andrew Jackson.

When asked by the host why he answered that way, he said “because it sounds black”. This man would’ve fully been an adult while Obama was in office.

Both of us are mixed with black (I’m Mexican and black, he is 1/4th black).

We have some of the worse bedroom life I’ve ever had in my life. In an attempt to meditate it, I filmed it to see the issue.

This man is fully trying to ram into me like he’s Roger rabbit running into a tunnel.

Literally, swinging hips and poking me absolutely NO WHERE and complaining!

He’s very weird about money. I don’t usually care about money much in relationships. I’ve got a good job, I’m fine with going 50/50, it’s whatever.

But he’s started a trend of “you get this I’ll get this” early on in our relationship that favors him. I don’t notice it at first until a concert.

Our first date, he “paid”. It was parking at a zoo that’s free in our city. The next date, I paid.

He planned it saying it was somewhere he really wanted to go. It was one of those VR cafes that are $40 a person.

The date after that, he paid for $5 icecream.

Then for the next date that I had to pay for, he booked reservations at a newly opened place in town that’s $60 a head.

I put a stop to it, but it still leaves an odd taste in my mouth that he’d even do that.

While we make around the same amount, he lives in a house his parents had built for him at his birth.

His car is fully paid off and he’s always digging into his trust fund.. I’ll end it here because I could rant all night.

I’m 11 lbs away from my goal weight

UPDATE: I broke up with him. While I do feel guilty, I think it’d be worse to just continue indefinitely.

We sat down and spoke, and while he did cry, I just comforted him and didn’t take back my choice.

Sometimes a person stays in a relationship long after their feelings have disappeared because ending it feels crueler than continuing it.

That can create a strange emotional trap: the longer the relationship lasts, the harder it becomes to admit that affection has already faded. Eventually, even something unrelated to the relationship can become the motivation needed to finally leave.

The OP is unusually candid about that dynamic. She says she knew within four months that she was no longer interested, yet remained with her boyfriend for another eight months. During that time, she became increasingly irritated by his intelligence, sexual compatibility, money habits, and other traits.

Her weight-loss goal eventually became a psychological finish line: reaching the goal would give her enough motivation to end the relationship. Her boyfriend may be kind, attractive, financially comfortable, and genuinely invested in her, but none of those qualities can manufacture attraction that she no longer feels.

The fresh perspective is that the weight loss itself isn’t necessarily the real “reward.” It appears to represent agency. The OP had been struggling to make one difficult decision, so she attached the breakup to another goal she could control. Each pound lost gave her evidence that she was capable of following through on something difficult.

The danger, however, is that she also turned her partner into a kind of unwanted obstacle rather than recognizing him as another person whose time and emotions mattered.

Psychologist John Gottman has written extensively about the destructive effect of contempt in intimate relationships. His research identifies contempt, criticism, defensiveness, and stonewalling as particularly damaging interaction patterns, with contempt being especially corrosive because it communicates superiority and disrespect.

The Gottman Institute specifically describes mocking, ridicule, sarcasm, name-calling, and an attitude of superiority as forms of contempt.

That framework is uncomfortable but relevant here. The OP’s private thoughts about her boyfriend have moved well beyond “I don’t feel attracted anymore.”

She describes him as exceptionally stupid, ridicules his sexual performance, scrutinizes his finances, and appears to be increasingly disgusted by his personality. Once a partner is viewed primarily through a lens of irritation and superiority, staying simply because they are nice becomes unfair to both people.

None of this means the boyfriend is entitled to remain in the relationship. His crying when she attempts to break up may make the conversation emotionally difficult, but his sadness cannot create an obligation for her to continue dating him. A respectful breakup may hurt him enormously while still being the more ethical choice.

The update is therefore the most encouraging part of the story. She finally sat down with him, ended the relationship, and did not reverse the decision when he cried. She comforted him without confusing compassion with reconsideration. That distinction matters. A person can feel terrible about causing pain and still know that leaving is necessary.

There is also a lesson for the OP herself. Reaching a personal goal can be empowering, but it shouldn’t take an external milestone to grant permission to make an honest decision. She already knew the relationship was over emotionally. The weight-loss achievement simply gave her the courage to act on something she had been postponing.

Her boyfriend deserved someone who genuinely wanted him, rather than someone waiting for the right excuse to leave. She deserved to stop living in a relationship she no longer wanted.

The kindest conclusion isn’t that either person was perfect. It is that continuing a relationship without genuine desire can become more hurtful than ending it honestly.

His tears were painful, but they were not a reason to give him another year of false hope. Sometimes compassion means accepting that someone will be hurt now rather than allowing them to be hurt slowly for much longer.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors criticized her for staying with someone she clearly disliked

araidai − I find it bizarre how people go “My partner isn’t a bad person, but… lists multiple negative attributes that can be considered/are bad traits”

but it really doesn’t help when you absolutely paint yourself as a terrible person in the process.

It’s a good thing y’all broke up, there’s a DEFINITELY need to mature and reevaluate on both ends.

Rough-Contest-7443 − Dunno what's worse, your boyfriend or you.

You obviously dislike him as a person yet seem to only be with him to feel superior and mock him on Reddit.

Why film you both having s__ (unbeknownst to him) to find the issue instead of just realising that and talking it through and helping him etc.

That's enough effort from me.

You're either a troll or just a s__t partner and person.

Both_Success5363 − why would you stay with him this long though? i get that you’re using it as motivation to lose weight but…

you really couldn’t find the motivation anywhere else?

you’re ok w wasting your own time and energy on some dude you don’t even like and you knew this for the past like 8 months?

girl im having trouble understanding you why would u put urself through that

ninjyy09 − I dunno girl, staying with someone you don't like for this long seems pretty dumb to me

These Redditors mocked the intelligence angle and pointed out her own questionable judgment

-Davster- − He may be dumb OP, but can *he* spell “off” in a title?

KingPotus − The Andrew Jackson thing is beyond dumb and I might’ve ended things right there.

You are absolutely in the wrong for wasting his time and yours. Beyond selfish.

These users understood why she wanted out but said she should have ended things sooner

DragonDrama − Everyone’s saying you are awful but he sounds like was financially manipulating you and dumb to boot.

I wouldn’t want to be with him either but you should’ve just ended it.

tesstrater12 − I don’t think you’re bad person for wanting to leave him but making it some sort of weight loss game is truly wild.

Break up with him now so both of you can move on.

Alarmed-Membership-1 − Glad you broke up with him. Hope he’ll find a nicer person next time.

Sarcatsticthecat − Just break up now and then you can lose your weight in peace

Was delaying the breakup crueler than the breakup itself? Were her complaints signs of basic incompatibility, or had resentment simply poisoned everything by then? Share the relationship verdict below.
