Stranger Rings Man’s Doorbell at 12:30AM Claiming to Collect Trash, Then Tries to Get Him to Open the Back Door

A doorbell ringing after midnight is unsettling enough, but finding a stranger waiting outside and asking you to open another door can make even an innocent explanation feel suspicious.

In that moment, personal safety tends to matter more than worrying about seeming rude.

One apartment resident faced exactly that after someone deliberately rang his doorbell around 12:30 in the morning.

Looking outside, he spotted an unfamiliar man walking around the building before eventually finding him standing on the patio.

The stranger claimed to work for the property’s trash collection service and repeatedly asked the resident to open his back door and hand over a garbage bag being kept inside.

Instead, the resident refused and called the police non-emergency line.

Officers later said the man’s story appeared legitimate, but one strange discovery the following morning left even more questions.

Scroll down to see why the resident is wondering whether calling police went too far.

not the actual photo

'AIO? Last night at 12:30 AM someone rang our doorbell?'

As the title says last night at 12:30 AM someone rang our doorbell. Not an

accidental ring. Like really intentional. So I looked out my bedroom window

and saw someone walking along the front of our apartment building. I

went downstairs to investigate and make sure all my doors were locked

and I saw a man I have never seen before standing on my patio. He claimed

he was with the trash pick up service that our landlord uses and was trying

to get me to open my back door and give him the bag we had kept inside to

keep animals out of it. I told him that I wasn’t doing that and he needed to

leave. He just repeating that he was with the trash guy. I walked away and

called our local police dept (non emergency number) to come and check

things out. They came and spoke with him and his story seemed to check

out. But I just don’t understand why he was there so late and what made

him think it was appropriate to ring a doorbell and try to get a man who

had clearly just woken up to open the back door and give him the bag. I

texted both my landlord and my property manager and have not heard

back. Just to let them know what happened on my side of things before

the “trash guy” gets in his side of the story. Whatever that might be. To top

it off the trash this man collected was just piled in our visitors lot this

morning and hadn’t even actually been removed. Did it I take it too far contacting police?

Sometimes a situation can have an innocent explanation and still feel deeply wrong while it is happening.

At 12:30 in the morning, a stranger repeatedly ringing someone’s doorbell, appearing on their private patio, and asking them to open a back door creates exactly that kind of uncertainty.

The OP did not know this man’s identity or intentions.

All he knew was that someone he had never seen before wanted access to a doorway in the middle of the night.

The emotional dynamics here revolve around uncertainty and personal safety.

Once the stranger claimed to work for the building’s trash service, the OP faced two competing interpretations: perhaps this was simply an employee doing his job at an absurd hour, or perhaps the explanation was being used to persuade him to open the door.

Refusing did not require deciding which interpretation was correct.

He could recognize the possibility of an innocent explanation while refusing to gamble his safety on it.

Calling the non-emergency police number also suggests that he was seeking verification rather than treating the stranger as unquestionably dangerous.

There is a useful distinction between fear and risk assessment.

People sometimes criticize cautious behavior afterward because nothing terrible happened.

Yet hindsight changes the information available. Once police apparently confirmed the man’s explanation, the encounter naturally seemed less threatening.

The OP standing inside his home beforehand did not possess that reassurance.

The strange hour, unfamiliar worker, unusual request, lack of advance notice, and trash later being left in the visitor lot gave him several reasonable reasons to question what was happening.

Importantly, he did not confront the stranger physically, open the door to investigate further, or make accusations he could not substantiate.

He stayed inside, refused the unusual request, and asked authorities to determine whether the explanation was legitimate.

The most useful next step is therefore practical rather than confrontational.

The landlord or property manager should clarify the trash company’s collection hours, whether workers are authorized to enter patios, and what residents should expect if bags are inaccessible.

Future collections should not require tenants to decide at midnight whether an unknown person outside their back door can be trusted.

In this case, calling the non-emergency line was not taking things too far.

It was allowing someone better positioned to verify an uncertain situation to do exactly that.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors agreed that the supposed trash collector’s story was suspicious and likely dishonest

Annual_Government_80 − Just because someone works for a company

doesn’t mean they also couldn’t be up to no good

Ok_Topic_5559 − NOR, why the f__k is the "trash guy" coming to collect

trash from INSIDE your home in the middle of the night? His whole story seems fake.

Psychological-Ad3128 − Thats not a legit thing a trash guy would do. They

dont ever ask for your inside trash lmao. This dude had bad intentions

ParticularHappy6587 − NOR. This is weird af. NO ONE goes collecting trash

after midnight. That is sus and very hinky. This person was up to no good.

Double check your locks etc every night, and double bolt everything if you

can. Maybe get a dog. Wow! That would be very unnerving for me. NOR. At all.

This group stressed that a stranger ringing the doorbell after midnight is an obvious safety concern

dragonflies2299 − NOR - i can't imagine any scenario that requires ringing a doorbell at 12:30am

Sad_Win_4105 − NOR. Someone trying to gain access to my home at zero

dark 30 is going to generate an actual 911 call.

BrianinEureka − Don’t answer your door at 12:30am unless they have a

warrant. I don’t care what the police say, this guy was trying to get inside your home.

SweetMaam − I would never open the door to a stranger after midnight. NOR

These commenters backed OP’s decision to contact police, saying the situation justified taking precautions

shilmish − NOR. thats so sketchy. Your instinct was correct, and you were

not overreacting calling the police to come check it out.

slowasaspeedingsloth − NOR No one needs to be asking anyone to open

their door at 12:30 in the morning! ! If it WAS legitimate, they need to be

reevaluating their business practices. Did he go to any of your neighbors??

Babs1024 − NOR. Wow. That is crazy. I wouldn't have even called the non-

emergency number. That would have been 911 for me. How crazy to ring

the doorbell to ask for a bag of trash in your house!!?

This commenter shared a frightening locksmith incident to illustrate why strangers should never be allowed inside when something feels wrong

ClassicVW2 − Never open your door “to check things out”. My daughter had

an apartment in a large postwar old building and arrived home alone from

having dinner with some college friends and realized she was locked out.

It’s about 20 miles from me, but it’s about an hour drive since I’d have to go through Manhattan to get there and I’m not a locksmith.

Super was not available so she started calling locksmiths. She had her

phone with her. Some places she left a message and didn’t hear back. One

guy did come, and got the door open without a problem. She paid him by Venmo and he left.

She called me to say it was take care of, She got her key from inside and

went back in the hallway with the door open and was making sure the key

still worked and there was no issue with the lock when another guy came

down the hall and said he was a locksmith. I was still on the phone with her.

He was obviously drunk and loud, and she told him another locksmith had

just taken care of it, you probably passed him on the way up here, and if

you’re a locksmith, you never called me back. He got louder and angry and

she tried to go back inside her apartment and he prevented her from closing the door.

I could hear the whole fight, the yelling, the grunting and screaming and

all. Somehow she was able to summon the strength and slam the door shut

and she called the police . They came but he was already gone. My adult

son drove to her apartment and stayed overnight with a gun just in case. Shortly after we moved her out of there.

Calling the police was a reasonable response to an unfamiliar man standing on the patio after midnight and repeatedly trying to get someone to open the door.

His explanation may have checked out, but the resident had no way of knowing that beforehand, and legitimate trash collection still doesn’t make the situation feel normal.

The abandoned garbage afterward only makes the whole encounter stranger.

Do you think contacting the police was appropriate caution, or should the resident have simply trusted the man’s explanation and gone back inside?
