He Was 19 Days Away From Moving to Canada When a DUI Threatened to Derail Everything

At 19, the poster thought his biggest life decision was finally falling into place. He and his girlfriend had spent four months planning their move to Canada, saving money, arranging a place to live, and lining up a job. In just 19 days, they were supposed to leave.

Then he went to a party.

After the party, he decided to keep the night going at a rave. On his way home, police pulled him over and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence. Suddenly, the future he had spent months building seemed to be hanging by a thread.

There was a court date. There were multiple charges. And, worst of all, he believed Canada might refuse him entry because of the DUI.

But there was one thing he hadn’t told anyone yet: his girlfriend.

He Was 19 Days Away From Moving to Canada When a DUI Threatened to Derail Everything

'I got a dui… 19 days before moving countries. i think i just ruined my life?'

Hello, i’m a 19 year old boy who made a really dumb mistake. For years i’ve been planning on moving, leaving the country and i finally got to doing it.

Me and my girlfriend decided on going to Canada, so for the past 4 months we have been planning, saving, and preparing for everything we needed to be able to...

We got the place we’re gonna stay, got my job lined up, set the date, and now that time is just 19 days away.

19 days. 19. last night, i went to a party and decided to go to a rave after because i wasn’t quite done partying. After the rave, on my way...

I was extremely cooperative with the police and even made them laugh a little before being taken to a pd where they blood tested me and had me call a...

After a long day of walking to work and getting my car back. It’s now setting in how stupid i was and how dramatic this will probably change my life.

I just found out that canada doesn’t let people in with a dui. I have a court date on september 2nd which i will need to attend. and im supposed...

i don’t know what im going to do. no one knows about this. I’ve kept it a secret from my girlfriend because she’s a very anxious person and i want...

**UPDATE**
thank you all for the feedback. i listened to the nice ones and told my family and my girlfriend.

My girlfriend didn’t react like i thought she would, maybe she’s just hiding how she really feels. But she’s being very supportive and right by my side and offering ideas...

I contacted an attorney which i’ll be meeting with tomorrow and thank you to the guy who told me to stop thinking with my wallet but with my brain.

I’m not going cheap with a lawyer if they can save my future. after reading most the comments i’m not entirely hopeless anymore. I know what I was doing was...

**UPDATE #2** Alright so this is where we are. I hired a firm to represent me, it’s small but they have a history of being great with their clients and...

they couldn’t guarantee they could get both scrubbed but they’ll try really hard and get body cams and some tracker info on the officers car. For those of you who...

Also some context to how I was pulled over. I tried passing a dodge charger but they cut me off, then i found out that charger was a cop car...

I also found out that my plans aren’t ruined, as I was only charged not convicted. The border can’t see charges, so i’m so grateful for that. I also took...

As for me and my girlfriend we are doing well, I would’ve broken down but she was there for me consulting me and diffusing all my emotions and worst case...

I do not come from a wealthy family and have worked for every penny I have, so this will all for sure be a burden to me in the future.....

I can’t fix a big dui permanently on my record. But besides all of that, my court date is on september 2nd so there is nothing I can do till...

One Bad Decision, One Huge Consequence

The arrest itself was a wake-up call. He said he had cooperated with the officers, was taken to the police department for blood testing, and eventually called someone to drive him home.

The next day, though, the reality started sinking in.

He had a court date on September 2, just nine days before the planned September 11 move. The apartment was arranged. The job was lined up. Months of preparation had already gone into the move.

Now he wasn’t even sure whether he would be allowed into the country.

Instead of telling his girlfriend immediately, he kept the arrest to himself. He described her as extremely anxious and convinced himself that withholding the information temporarily would protect her from the stress he was experiencing.

It was understandable thinking, but it was also risky. This wasn’t a forgotten speeding ticket. It potentially affected both of their futures.

And Reddit quickly picked up on that.

Several commenters urged him to stop trying to handle everything alone. One reminded him that his girlfriend deserved the chance to process the situation and make plans with him rather than discovering the problem at the last possible moment.

Others focused on the obvious lesson. Driving under the influence wasn’t simply an unfortunate mistake. He had made a decision that could have killed someone.

That realization seemed to hit him hard.

He eventually told his family and his girlfriend.

Her reaction surprised him.

Rather than abandoning him or panicking, she stayed beside him and started helping him think through what they could do next. For the first time since the arrest, he seemed less focused on the idea that his entire life was over.

Then he hired a lawyer.

The Problem Was Complicated, But Not Hopeless

The poster explained that he decided not to choose a lawyer based solely on price. His family wasn’t wealthy, and he knew the legal fees would hurt financially, but he wanted someone who could seriously fight the charges.

The firm he hired had experience with similar cases. They couldn’t promise a particular outcome, but they planned to obtain evidence including body-camera footage and information related to the police vehicle.

He also began looking for an immigration lawyer in Canada to understand how the criminal charges could affect his future plans.

One important distinction gave him some relief: at that point, he had been charged, not convicted.

That didn’t mean everything was automatically fine. Canadian immigration rules concerning criminal inadmissibility can be complicated, and the eventual outcome of a case can matter enormously. But it meant his situation was not necessarily as hopeless as he initially believed.

His story also revealed something more important than the immigration question.

He was 19.

He had made an incredibly serious mistake, but he still had decades ahead of him.

A bad decision could have consequences without becoming the definition of an entire life.

Why the Panic Felt So Overwhelming

Psychologist and author Lisa Damour has written extensively about how teenagers and young adults can experience intense emotional reactions when major stressors threaten their sense of control. Her work emphasizes that overwhelming emotions can make a difficult situation feel much larger and more permanent than it actually is. Psychology Today profile of Lisa Damour

That perspective fits this situation surprisingly well.

The poster had spent months imagining one specific future: moving to Canada with his girlfriend, starting a job, and beginning adult life together. The DUI suddenly threatened that entire picture. It wasn’t only the legal charge he was afraid of. It was the possibility that the future he’d already emotionally moved into could disappear overnight.

But the comments helped shift his perspective. He couldn’t undo the decision, but he could control what happened next.

He could tell the truth. Get qualified legal advice. Accept the consequences. And, most importantly, make sure this never happened again.

That isn’t fixing the mistake. It’s taking responsibility for it.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

Hotfartsinyourmouth − My friend was living in Canada and he got a dui and they deported his ass back to the US with a quickness….

Iputahexonyoulol − You’re not gonna be able to leave for a while and there are some countries that won’t let you enter with a dui. I think Australia and Canada...

Flaky_Point_3778 − At least you have time to process. Imagine her thinking she’s going, being excited, then finds out just days beforehand that you messed it all up.

That’s going to be devastating. However, driving under the influence can end up way more devastating way quicker so take it as a lesson learned and give her some time...

berryfrequent23 − I don’t know anything about dui or moving to Canada. However, I do know about making mistakes and feeling like you’ve ruined your life.

I promise you, you have not ruined your life. This is just one of those live and learned lessons, and you’ll look back at this moment and realize how much...

Everything will be okay. You’re going to have to tell your girlfriend though. And maybe you guys can come up with a new plan. Life takes adjusting sometimes. You will...

Puzzleheaded-Bed4682 − Get a good lawyer who is experienced. You might be able to get it plead down

mizu5 − As a Canadian, I cannot fathom how a 19 year old could move here or get a job lined up. Jobs are insanely competitive, even serving at a...

Frogbreakfest69 − Maybe dont drink and drive and put other people on the road in danger. This isnt your first time doing this.

thatonethrowaway44 − Buddy, I don't really know how to comfort you in this, because I did the same thing when I was 19.

I had a buddy in Canada I was gonna move with, and I was jazzed, but I got a DUI after a concert and I had barely drank, but being...

At least do better than me. I'm sorry, for what it's worth. Good luck, friend.

Thiscantmatter − Canada will not take you with a DUI record. My uncle can't come from NY into Canada to visit the family house on the thousand islands. Sorry bud

suitable_zone3 − My aunt was killed by a drunk driver. Her life was ruined. You caught a charge. You didn't ruin your life or anyone else's. But thank God you...

Final Thoughts

The DUI wasn’t nothing. It was a serious mistake with potentially serious consequences, and pretending otherwise wouldn’t help.

But the poster learned something important before the situation became even worse. He stopped hiding, told the people closest to him, hired professionals, and started facing the problem instead of imagining every possible disaster.

He may have lost money. He may have had to change his plans. But a life can survive a bad chapter.

The real question was never whether he had ruined his life. It was whether he was willing to learn from the mistake before making another one.
