He Sacrificed His Childhood to Support His Brother, Then Asked Him to Move Out of His Basement

At 16 years old, most teenagers are worrying about school, friends, and what they might do after graduation.

This man was worrying about how to keep his family afloat.

His mother couldn’t keep a steady job, so when he was 16, he dropped out of high school and started working full-time. He took on the financial role of a parent, providing for his younger brother and giving him an allowance.

His brother, in return, did something that made the sacrifice feel worthwhile. He worked hard at school and eventually earned a full scholarship to study abroad.

Years later, both brothers were adults with lives of their own.

The older brother, now 37 and married, had built a comfortable life. His younger brother had married too and recently completed his master’s degree.

When the younger couple returned to the city without savings, the older brother offered them a place to stay in his basement for a year.

It was supposed to be a chance for them to save money and reconnect after more than a decade apart.

Four months later, he was ready for them to leave.

He Sacrificed His Childhood to Support His Brother, Then Asked Him to Move Out of His Basement

'AITA for asking my brother and wife to vacate the basement?'

I'm four years older than my brother, and we've always had a unique relationship. Growing up, my mother was unable to keep a job, so when I was 16, I...

When I started working, I took on the role of a father in a financial sense. I provided for his basic needs and gave him an allowance. He paid me...

I'm 37 now, married, and have a decent quality of life. My brother got married too and just finished his master's degree, so they moved back to the city.

He and his wife just started working but had no savings, so I offered to let them move into my basement for a year to save a little money and...

They've been here for about four months now, and I feel disrespected and unappreciated in my own home. Here are a few scenarios:

1. At the beginning, I was super excited and tried to be hospitable. I cooked for them and tried to be a nice host, but they always complained about the...

it was never to their liking. I took them out for dinner: same story, not to their liking.

I even took them on a trip, and from the hotels to the food, it was still not to their liking.

However, my brother's wife has cooked a few times and cannot stop talking about how great their food is, asking us, "Aren't you happy that I'm here to cook for...

2. They started criticizing things around my house, from the cleanliness (due to dog hair) to the brand of utensils and kitchenware we use. They even went so far as...

3. I asked my brother to take turns cutting the grass. He never did, and when I confronted him, he said he was too busy and tired.

4. I noticed my sister-in-law would not reply with a "hello" or "good morning" to my wife. I decided to talk to them, and my brother said that's just how...

I talked to them about all these issues, but their behavior didn't change, or they would say "good morning," "thanks," or "it's good" with a sarcastic tone.

I got upset and started doing the exact same things they did. Am I the A-hole for that? My brother complained and told me I was being rude toward him,...

Now, my wife and I have talked, and we are going to ask them to move out in two months. AITA?

The Favor Started Feeling Like an Insult

At first, the older brother was genuinely excited.

He wanted to be a good host.

He cooked for his brother and sister-in-law, took them out to restaurants, and even brought them along on a trip.

But almost nothing seemed good enough.

The meals weren’t to their liking.

The restaurants weren’t to their liking.

Even the hotels and food on the trip apparently gave them something to complain about.

Then the sister-in-law began cooking.

She would apparently praise her own food enthusiastically and ask them whether they were happy she was there to cook for them.

The homeowner tried not to take it personally.

People have different tastes.

But then the criticism moved beyond food.

His brother and sister-in-law began commenting on the house itself.

They criticized its cleanliness, including the dog hair, and complained about the brands of utensils and kitchenware he and his wife used.

At one point, they even suggested throwing some of his things away and replacing them with their own.

That was harder to shrug off.

This wasn’t their apartment.

It was his home.

And they were living there because he had offered them a favor.

Then Came the Lawn

The older brother eventually asked his sibling to help with one simple household responsibility: cutting the grass.

It seemed reasonable.

The couple was staying in the house, and he didn’t expect them to become full-time housekeepers. He simply wanted them to contribute.

His brother never did it.

When asked about it, he said he was too busy and tired.

That response apparently became another piece of a much larger puzzle.

The older brother also noticed that his sister-in-law rarely acknowledged his wife.

No “hello.”

No “good morning.”

Nothing that suggested basic friendliness.

When he brought it up, his brother defended her by explaining that she was simply like that and had been raised without much of a filter.

For the homeowner, that explanation didn’t make the behavior less disrespectful.

He had already sacrificed years of his life for his younger brother.

Now he was opening his home to him.

The least he expected was basic courtesy toward his wife.

The Relationship Had Quietly Changed

The most interesting part of the story isn’t really the food, the lawn, or even the dog hair.

It’s the relationship underneath all of it.

For much of his life, the older brother had occupied a caretaker role.

When they were children, he had been the one providing money.

He had essentially acted as a father financially.

His younger brother had been the child he was protecting.

But that younger brother was no longer a child.

He was a married adult with a master’s degree and a new career.

And perhaps the older brother hadn’t fully adjusted to that reality either.

He had spent so many years giving that helping his brother may have become almost automatic.

But generosity becomes complicated when the person receiving it stops behaving as though it is generosity.

The American Psychological Association emphasizes that healthy relationships require open communication, constructive conflict, and attention to repeated patterns of resentment rather than simply allowing problems to build.

That’s exactly what seems to have happened here.

The brothers talked about the problems.

Nothing meaningfully changed.

Eventually, the older brother stopped trying to be the bigger person and started mirroring their behavior.

If they were sarcastic, he became sarcastic.

If they were dismissive, he became dismissive.

If they were rude, he gave the same energy back.

His brother noticed immediately.

And suddenly, the behavior that had apparently been acceptable when it came from his wife was unacceptable when directed at him.

Mirroring Them Wasn’t Exactly the Best Solution

This is where the homeowner isn’t completely above criticism.

Matching someone’s rudeness may feel satisfying, especially when you’ve repeatedly tried to explain why their behavior bothers you.

But it rarely solves the underlying problem.

It turns a boundary dispute into a competition over who can be more unpleasant.

The APA notes that repeated destructive communication patterns can damage relationships, while constructive approaches involve listening, expressing concerns clearly, and addressing recurring problems directly.

So while the brother had every right to be frustrated, deliberately copying their behavior probably wasn’t the healthiest response.

But that doesn’t mean he has to keep hosting them.

Those are two separate questions.

Asking Them to Leave Is a Different Matter

After discussing everything with his wife, the homeowner decided they would ask the couple to move out in two months.

That sounds harsh until you remember the original agreement.

He offered them the basement for a year so they could save money.

The arrangement was never supposed to mean they could criticize his home, ignore his wife, refuse reasonable household responsibilities, and continue living there indefinitely.

Two months also gives them time to make other arrangements.

He isn’t throwing them onto the street overnight.

He’s simply recognizing that the arrangement isn’t working.

And family support doesn’t have to mean unlimited tolerance.

The Arc’s family-support guidance, although focused on families supporting relatives with intellectual and developmental disabilities, makes a broader point about family caregiving that applies here: support should strengthen families rather than rely on one person carrying an unsustainable burden indefinitely.

The same principle can apply to financial and housing support.

Helping someone should not require destroying your own peace.

There Is Something Sad About the Whole Situation

The irony is that the older brother didn’t have to help in the first place.

He had already given his brother something enormous when they were young.

He sacrificed his own education and teenage years so his sibling could have opportunities he didn’t have.

And his brother apparently made good use of those opportunities.

He earned a scholarship.

He studied abroad.

He completed a master’s degree.

In many ways, the older brother’s sacrifice worked.

That’s probably why this situation hurts so much.

He wasn’t asking for repayment.

He wasn’t demanding that his brother spend the rest of his life thanking him.

He simply wanted some respect.

And when that respect wasn’t there, he finally realized that being someone’s brother doesn’t mean being their permanent provider.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

HoneyBloomxe − NTA. You gave them a place to stay and they responded by disrespecting you and your wife. Asking them to move out is completely reasonable.

BlondDee1970 − NTA. You tried to do them a favor and it sounds like they don't appreciate it. Let them move out.

Stock_Particular6525 − NTA You're really generous OP, I'd have given them 30 days. Make sure they don't knock a few holes in the walls on their way out.

2ndcupofcoffee − They aren’t happy to be the recipients of your help. They need to convince you and themselves that they are staying with you as a favor to you....

2ndcupofcoffee − Frame telling them to leave as you recognizing how unhappy they are living in your home.

Be so understanding of how much they have suffered during the past four months and that it has also been difficult for you and your wife to host them knowing...

No-Requirement-2420 − NTA you sacrificed your education for him so he could got to school and get this education and get a masters. Time to stop looking at him as...

HuntAccurate9397 − NTA your brother and SIL need to learn the hard way obviously not to bite the hand that feeds them, also known as FAFO!

Swirlyflurry − NTA You gave them a chance to shape up. Now you’re giving them two months to ship out.

You were doing them a favor by letting them stay with you and save money, and they couldn’t even be bothered to have some basic respect while living with you.

Vahuo89 − How can you even think that you're the AH? It's perfectly reasonable to ask not to be disrespected in one's own home

Any_Assumption_2023 − "Hi , brother: its clear you are not enjoying living here, and you both seem uncomfortable around my wife and myself. "

"We also are uncomfortable,  and I feel its time you found a new place to live, given our differences.

" "We'd appreciate it if you would move out in 2 weeks. ( select time frame. )" Time for them to go, the sooner the better.

Final Thoughts

There is a difference between helping family and allowing family to take over your home.

The older brother gave up a significant part of his own adolescence to make sure his younger sibling had a chance at a better future. He then opened his home to that same brother years later.

He wasn’t asking for worship.

He was asking for courtesy.

Mirroring their behavior may not have been his finest moment, but deciding that the arrangement needs to end is entirely different.

Sometimes the healthiest family boundary isn’t a dramatic confrontation.

It’s simply saying, “I love you, but this isn’t working anymore.”

And after everything he had already done for his brother, he has every right to finally protect the peace he spent years working to build.
