Mom Leaves Husband One Dinner Task, Returns to Raw Chicken Scissors and an Open Baby Gate

When you’re raising six children, there are probably few things more important than keeping the youngest ones safe, especially when you’re juggling dinner, errands, and everything else that comes with a busy household. Sometimes, though, one small decision can create a much bigger problem.

The OP was preparing dinner when she realized they were missing tortillas, so she asked her husband to put the chicken in the oven while she quickly went to the store.

She expected to come home to find dinner underway. Instead, she discovered raw chicken mess left on the counter, a pair of children’s scissors that had been used to open the package, and the baby gate left open near the kitchen.

With a two-year-old in the house, the open gate immediately raised some serious safety concerns. When she confronted her husband about it, he became furious and accused her of treating him like a child. But there was another detail behind his behavior that made the situation even more frustrating. Scroll down to see what happened!

A mother confronts her husband after he leaves a risky kitchen mess while rushing back to a game

'AITA for getting after my husband “like a child”?'

40 wife and mom of 6 (20 - 2), I was preparing to cook dinner when I realized that we were short on tortillas.

I asked my husband (37) if he could put the chicken in the oven while I ran to the store.

We usually cook together or take turns cooking so he knows his way around the kitchen.

I returned home to find the kitchen baby-gate open and no husband.

I noticed on the counter the remnants of him opening the package of chicken with a pair of children’s scissors.

There’s a drawer of utensils (including a knife)underneath the area he left the raw chicken juice covered scissors and trash.

The kitchen shears are in the knife block an arm’s length directly behind.

He chose to use the pair the kids do homework and crafts with and are kept on the ledge in a pen cup.

When my husband came back into the kitchen, I asked “Why did you use these dirty-a** **scissors when there are a million other ways to open the chicken?

Why is this mess still sitting here?

And the gate was open, Boogie (2) could have been in the kitchen with the oven and stove on, what the heck were you thinking?”

He starts screaming at me saying I treat him like s*** and he’s not a child.

Turns out he was playing a flight simulator video game in the bedroom when I asked him to help, so he was just trying to get back

before he crashed. Am I the a-hole for reacting the way I did or has my husband freaky friday-ed with our 16 yr old?

Few things exhaust a parent faster than believing they can hand off one small responsibility, only to discover they still have to supervise it afterward. In this situation, the wife was not simply angry about a pair of children’s scissors.

She returned to raw chicken residue, an open baby gate, hot appliances, and a two-year-old who could potentially wander into the kitchen. The discovery likely carried a frustrating message: even while running to the store, part of the household’s safety still seemed to remain on her shoulders.

Her husband experienced the moment differently. Hearing “dirty-a** scissors” and “what were you thinking?” probably felt less like criticism of one decision and more like an attack on his competence.

That helps explain his claim that she treated him “like a child,” although screaming back did nothing to address the underlying problem. His explanation also made matters harder to dismiss. He had rushed through cooking because he wanted to return to a flight simulator before his virtual plane crashed.

There is a useful alternative perspective here. Perhaps neither spouse deliberately created a parent-child dynamic. It emerged because one adult completed a task in a way that required the other adult to notice the hazards, question the choices, and effectively perform quality control afterward.

When one partner repeatedly becomes the person responsible for anticipating what might go wrong, resentment can develop even if the physical chore itself was technically shared.

Sociologist Allison Daminger describes this invisible responsibility as cognitive labor. Her research breaks household mental work into anticipating needs, identifying options, making decisions, and monitoring outcomes.

Research summarized by Psychology Today suggests women often carry more of the anticipating and monitoring portions of family life. That distinction matters because completing a task is not the same as carrying responsibility for whether it was completed safely and properly.

At the same time, couples researcher John Gottman’s work offers some context for the husband’s defensiveness.

Relationship therapist Kyle Killian, Ph.D., explains that criticism aimed at someone’s character often provokes defensiveness, while complaints focused on a specific behavior are easier to address. Defensiveness, however, can escalate conflict because it shifts attention away from taking responsibility for the original mistake.

So the wife’s delivery was harsh, but the safety concerns underneath it were legitimate. A useful solution would be practical rather than symbolic: whoever accepts cooking duty also takes ownership of food safety, cleanup, shutting gates, and monitoring active appliances. Video games can be paused or abandoned; a toddler near a hot kitchen cannot.

The bigger question is not whether the husband was “a child.” It is whether both adults can reliably carry a responsibility from beginning to end without making the other person become the supervisor.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors called his behavior weaponized incompetence meant to dump responsibility on his wife

tired-as-f − He's using weaponised incompetence to see if he can make you do everything because he doesn't want to lift a finger.

Vogelsucht − Weaponized incompetence and video games, name a more iconic "husband has mom as wife" duo. NTA

NormativeTruth − 6 kids and he’s playing games m; then gaslighting you with his weaponised incompetence. Ask yourself, do you really need a 7th child?

You shoukd send this one back to his mother. Clearly she wasn’t done raising him.

Think-Cry-5284 − Think about this: if you had a stroke could you trust him to keep the household together? Let alone take care of you? Plan accordingly.

These commenters said his careless choices were immature and created legitimate safety concerns

Phoenix-Phire38 − NTA - He was extremely irresponsible in every way. If he's going to act like an immature teenager then he can be treated like one.

Maximum-Pilot387 − The fact he left the baby gate open with the oven on while using the kids’ scissors on raw chicken is enough alone to justify you being upset.

That’s not “treating him like a child,” that’s basic safety. NTA. Maybe a calm talk later about pausing games when real-life stuff needs doing.

OHolyNightowl − Him screaming at you is enough for him to be the arsehole.

These Redditors focused on the danger of leaving a toddler near an open gate and hot oven

Send_bird_pics − Most serious accidents to children happen under the “care” of their male care givers.

It is not safe for a 2 year old to be unaccompanied in a kitchen.

antizana − Another day, another woman having several kids with a complete waste of space father

needforcheeses − Why was he playing a game during waking hours for kids?

Do that when they’ve gone to bed/ can entertain themselves (in the case of the 20yo! )

Was her angry reaction proportionate to what she found, or did the delivery turn a reasonable complaint into an unnecessary fight?
