Neighbor Harasses a Dog With His Drone for Months, Then Sues After the Dog Finally Destroys It

in Social Issues

Ignoring a neighbor’s repeated warnings can be risky, especially when there is video evidence showing exactly what has been happening.

Sometimes taking a dispute to court only gives the other person the perfect opportunity to present everything you hoped would stay unnoticed.

That is what happened after one man refused to stop flying his drone into a neighbor’s fenced backyard and repeatedly buzzing a terrified dog.

The homeowner complained several times and even contacted police, but the behavior continued until the Malamute eventually caught the low-flying drone and shredded it.

The drone owner responded by filing a small claims case for more than $1,000, insisting the dog had been trained to attack his property.

The homeowner arrived in court with photos, videos, veterinary bills, and plenty of documentation.

Keep reading to see why the lawsuit backfired far more spectacularly than the neighbor expected.

'Neighbor Sued Me After Harassing My Dog for Months, Lost Horribly?'

Several commenters telling me that you guys would enjoy this story;

About 6 or 7 months ago, my neighbor got a drone. I don't mind people

having hobbies, but for some reason he insisted on flying like the biggest

jerk possible. He would hover in front of other houses and windows, try to

"race" cars going down the road, and worst of all he had a habit of flying his

drone in my fenced back yard buzzing over my dog, diving low just over my

dogs head before circling around to do it again. My dog isn't small, he's

about 70lbs and a Malamute, but the drone terrified him, and I was worried what would happen if it hit him.

I asked my neighbor several times to please not fly in my yard and

explained that it was scaring my dog, he basically told me to get lost and

laughed in my face. When it still continued, I called the police.

Unfortunately there wasn't much they could do other than ask him to

please not fly over my house/property.

Finally, in late December it happened - my dog got tired of his s__t and

managed to catch the drone right as it was diving towards him. He

shredded the drone, the thing was just a jumbled mess of wires and plastic.

Neighbor was pissed. He stormed over to my house swearing and

threatening me, which I ignored. A week later, I got a summons to small

claims court, he wanted $900 for the cost of his drone and an additional

$300 for supposedly denying him access to his property (the drone sat in

my yard for a couple hours before it was retrieved). F__k that. He could

have killed my dog. I don't have kids or a girlfriend, I just have my dog who

is my best friend for the past 7 years. That dog has moved with me three

times, was there when I graduated college, saw me buy my first house and my first new car. I love my dog.

Went to LegalAdvice, got some great help from them. Turns out, him suing

me was the best thing to ever happen. When we got to small claims court,

the judge basically laughed away his claims that I had intentionally trained

my dog to attack his drone. But little did he know I was prepared. I had

dozens of photos of my yard showing it was impossible for him to

"accidently" fly that low to my dog, videos of him harassing my dog in the

past, and I had saved all my medical bills from taking my dog to the vet.

$700 for an xray? Check. Another $250 to sedate him during? Why not,

don't want him being uncomfortable. Full dental exam with tooth

cleaning/repair? $400. Then there was the cost of anti-anxiety meds and a

secondary check up, wet food for a week in case his teeth were hurt, and

extra just for good measure. In the end, the a__hole ended up owing me

almost $2,000, and now is being investigated by the FAA for not having a

registered drone and violating several FAA regulations concerning drone

flight, too near an airport, too close to other people, out of sight of

operator and waaay above the maximum altitude.. Enjoy never being allowed to fly drones again, d__k.

Sometimes the most satisfying consequences are the ones a person accidentally creates for themselves.

The OP repeatedly asked his neighbor to stop flying a drone into his fenced yard and frightening his dog.

Those requests were ignored, and even police intervention apparently did little to change the behavior.

By the time the dog finally caught the drone, the conflict was no longer about one damaged piece of equipment.

It was about months of someone treating another person’s boundaries as meaningless.

The emotional core of the story is easy to understand.

The dog was not simply a pet to the OP; he described him as his closest companion through major stages of adulthood.

Watching the drone repeatedly dive toward an animal he loved would naturally create fear and anger, especially after polite attempts to stop it failed.

What made matters worse was the neighbor’s response afterward. Instead of reflecting on his own behavior, he sued and apparently framed himself as the injured party.

Psychology offers an interesting explanation for why disputes like this escalate.

Reactance theory, originally developed by psychologist Jack Brehm, describes how people can become resistant when they perceive their freedom to act as being restricted.

Studies published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology have found that perceived unfair treatment can increase retaliatory responses, particularly when people feel they have been treated without fairness or respect.

In this case, both men likely saw themselves as wronged, but only one of them entered court with documentation showing a longer pattern of conduct and actual expenses connected to the dispute.

That is what separates this from simple revenge. The OP did not secretly destroy the drone or invent losses after the fact.

He preserved videos, photographs, veterinary bills, and other records, then presented them through the same legal process the neighbor had chosen.

The neighbor effectively opened the door to scrutiny of the broader situation.

There is still a useful lesson underneath the entertaining ending. When someone repeatedly ignores reasonable boundaries, documentation is often more powerful than matching their aggression.

Dates, videos, written requests, receipts, and official reports turn “my word against yours” into evidence.

The OP may describe the outcome as revenge, but the more interesting interpretation is accountability.

His neighbor tried to make him pay for the consequences of months of reckless behavior. Instead, the process finally forced that behavior into the open.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors warned OP to protect the dog and prepare for possible retaliation

vilebunny − Watch out for that a__hole. He might try the poisoned meat

b__lshit, let your dog out of the yard, or take the dog out of the yard if

you're not watching. Make sure to put a security camera on your fence and

be in the yard or watching any time your dog is out.

GailaMonster − Keep a CLOSE eye on your dog. Neighbor thought it was

fun to harass him in the fist place, he probably "blames" you and your dog

for the consequences of his actions, and may try to hurt/poison/k__l your

dog in retaliation. No amount of suing him/putting him in jail for doing that will bring back your pupper, so be careful.

Rosewolf − I would move. I've known too many evil, vindictive psychos to

believe he won't try to retaliate in some dark way.

These commenters agreed the neighbor’s drone behavior was reckless and especially dangerous around dogs

RaboKarabek − I'm a drone pilot and enthusiast, and people like this guy

are the absolute worst for a growing industry that's generally trying to

promote an image of safety, with an emphasis on communication and

education. Any drone pilot who's done any amount of basic

training/research will never fly close to any neighbouring houses, animals

or in any antagonistic manner that endangers or harasses anyone.

It really just takes one guy to make it look bad for everyone. S__ew that

guy. He got what he deserved, and I'm glad your dog is ok. edit: a word

clricha − Your neighbor is an absolute i__ot for messing around with a

Malamute! Malamutes are extremely prey driven, most of them can and

will chase down smaller animals and k__l them if possible.

I have 2 malamutes and when I take them to the outdoor dog park I have to

keep a constant eye on them and what they are looking at because I know

they will try to eat mice or squirrels or whatever else that is around that isnt a fellow canine.

One of mine even got a 3.5 foot garter snake and slurped it down like a

spaghetti noodle! My big malamute even likes to chase birds and has

caught a few, I can guarantee that if some i__ot flew a drone in my yard

and it got within ten feet of the ground that it would be destroyed in seconds. obiligatory pics!

These commenters supported OP’s defense of his dog and wanted to know what happened afterward

SchroedingersSphere − That's brilliant. What was his reaction? How has he been since the case?

IUsed2BHot − Good for you! Anyone fucks with my dog, that's it! I got a

bunch of s__tty looks at a family birthday party one year because I

screamed at this sneaky little d__che who kept trying to run my dog over with her Barbie Jeep. I regret nothing.

These Redditors joked about getting a drone while warning OP not to provoke the unstable neighbor

[Reddit User] − good s__t. You should use some of the money to get

yourself a cheap drone, fly it around your house a bit when you know your

neighbor is watching. Just do it by the book, register it and everything. But,

that might be a little far, you dont want to goad him too much. Its clear hes not playing with a full deck.

fat_cloudz − Sounds like you got enough $$ to become a drone enthusiast yourself and f__k that guy.

The neighbor expected a $1,200 payday after his drone was destroyed, but taking the dispute to court only created a paper trail of his own reckless behavior.

Months of ignoring warnings and repeatedly frightening the dog ultimately left him facing nearly $2,000 in veterinary expenses, plus scrutiny over how he had been flying the drone.

In the end, his lawsuit accomplished almost exactly the opposite of what he intended.

Was this perfect accidental revenge, or did the dog simply deliver the consequences his owner refused to accept?
