Man Tells Girlfriend He’s No Contact With His Brother, but She Keeps Pushing for Reconciliation

Dating someone who comes from a close family can be refreshing, but it can also highlight just how differently two people view relatives, loyalty, and boundaries. For someone who has never needed distance from a sibling, choosing no contact may be difficult to understand.

One Reddit user found himself explaining exactly that to his new girlfriend, Jessica. After happily meeting her parents and siblings, he agreed that she could soon meet the members of his family he remains close with. The complication came when she asked about his brother.

He explained that they had been no contact for six months and that his mental health had noticeably improved since making that decision. Jessica initially seemed to understand, but her repeated questions about reconciliation have left him wondering whether she truly accepts his boundary. Scroll down to see why he refuses to budge.

A man’s firm no-contact boundary with his brother creates tension with his family-oriented girlfriend

'AITAH about being upfront with my girlfriend about a boundary and not budging on it?'

I (early 30's) have been seeing Jessica (29F) for a few months now, and we've been known each other through mutual friends for about a year.

We've recently been more involved together and are dating now.

Jessica is very family oriented.

After a few months of us being serious, she wanted me to meet her 2 brothers and 2 sisters, as well as her parents.

This was a little early for me, but I went along with it. Her family was very nice and welcoming to me.

Although both of her brothers are very big into sprots while I'm a casual fan at best, we got along very well.

Her sisters were also both very kind and were interested in hearing about my travels around the world. Her parents, same deal, nice.

Overall, it went a lot better than I thought and I was happy to have met them.

I am not as close with my family compared to her. While I'm close to my parents and my sister, I am no contact with my brother and his family.

I have posted before about them if you want to read about that.

After meeting her family, Jessica asked when she could meet mine. I normally wait longer to do so, but since it went so well with hers,

I decided to go along with it. I told her that my sister would be in town in October, and we could meet her together then meet my parents.

I figured that was a pretty good idea.

Jessica seemed to agree, but then remembered I said I had a brother who had a family, and asked when she could meet them.

I told her I have been no contact with them for about 6 months now and then explained all the issues we had since I was in high school.

I said I do not hate my brother, or his family, but I was in a better mental health space since doing that.

My sister(who is also NC with them) and my parents are aware of this and support it, though grudgingly so for my parents.

Jessica was somewhat taken a back by this. She told me that she understood that I had issues with my brother and his family,

but didn't think I had gone so far as to go no contact. I told her I had tried to make thing works,

but they both(mostly my SIL) did not respect my boundaries and doing this was the only way to make them understand.

I brought up that I still send them Christmas gifts, to include my nephew Connor, and pitch in

for helping cover the cost of Connor's extra treatments/therapy but I have not spoken or seen them in about 6 months.

And that my life and mental health has improved since then.

Jessica got quiet after that. She asked if I would ever stop her from seeing her siblings. I told her no.

If she wants to see her siblings or parents, even if I had a falling out with them, I would not stop her or tell her she can't.

She is more than welcome to if she wants to. It is not my place to tell her no.

But at the same time, she can't tell me I have to see my siblings or parents either. That is my decision.

She then asked if she could meet them. I thought for a bit and said that in the future, if she really wants to, maybe.

But I would not be joining her in meeting them. I told her that I wouldn't break up with her for meeting with them,

but I would consider it if she met them and then tried to convince me to get back in contact with them. I explained that I was happy with that...

She nodded and said she understood. Since then, things have been going well but she's been making comments

about how it's unfortunate that if and when our families meet, that my brother and his family won't be there.

That her family couldn't really fathom going entirely no contact with a sibling, much less one who has a family.

I said I'd be happy to sit them all down and explain why I did what I did, but there were reasons to it.

She asked if I'd ever reconsider having them in my life, and I said probably not. I won't say "never" but I don't really see it happening.

She said "ok" and was very quiet the rest of the night.

AITAH? I really do like her, and her family,

but I am very adamant about staying no contact with my brother and his family, as uncomfortable as it makes her.

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to respect are the ones we would never need for ourselves. The OP clearly cares about Jessica and has made an effort to enter her close-knit family world, even meeting everyone earlier than he normally would.

What he is asking in return is different but equally important: that she accept his decision to remain disconnected from a brother whose presence, according to him, repeatedly damaged his well-being.

Jessica’s reaction is understandable to a point. Someone raised in a tightly connected family may experience sibling estrangement as almost unimaginable. To her, meeting a partner’s family may symbolize intimacy, commitment, and eventually blending two families together.

Discovering that one branch will remain absent can therefore feel unsettling. But discomfort with someone’s boundary is different from having authority to renegotiate it.

A fresher way to view this conflict is as a possible values mismatch rather than a disagreement about one brother. Jessica appears to believe family relationships should be preserved despite serious conflict.

The OP believes continued access depends on respectful behavior. Neither philosophy automatically makes someone cruel, but compatibility may depend on whether Jessica can live with a family structure she personally dislikes. Her repeated comments about future reunions suggest she may still be hoping his boundary is temporary rather than accepting it as his current reality.

Family-estrangement researcher Lucy Blake, Ph.D., of the University of the West of England, explains through the American Psychological Association that sibling estrangement is more common and complicated than people often assume.

Family members caught between estranged relatives can feel pressure to restore unity or demonstrate loyalty, while the estranged person may experience grief alongside relief. Blake also emphasizes that research still does not provide a simple formula for successful reconciliation.

Counselor and family-relations professor Suzanne Degges-White, Ph.D., similarly notes that estrangement is rarely an impulsive decision. People often reach no contact after prolonged attempts to tolerate, explain, repair, or establish limits, and distance may function as protection rather than punishment.

That context fits the OP’s description. He still sends gifts and contributes toward his nephew’s treatment, so the cutoff does not appear rooted in indifference. He has simply decided that direct contact costs him too much.

He is therefore not wrong for refusing to budge. The more important conversation now is whether Jessica can genuinely respect that decision without treating herself as the future mediator. She does not have to understand why he chose no contact exactly as he does. She does need to stop assuming that loving him means eventually repairing a relationship he deliberately left.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors said Jessica needs to stay out of OP’s private family issues

Loulou107 − Jessica really needs to mind her business about your family issues with your brother.

It simply doesn’t affect her. Next time she mentions it, tell her you’re not comfortable discussing it and then change the topic.

Similar_Corner8081 − NTA She needs to learn to stay in her own lane. Not every family is like the Brady Bunch.

I haven't been in contact with my family in awhile and I would be upset if someone kept trying to push it like they know better.

BefuddledPolydactyls − NTA. Wow. A few months of dating and she's trying to shame/guilt you for choices you made for your mental health.

With your family members that you have a lifetime of history with?

To me, nice girl or not, she's pretty pushy so early in, as well as trying to involve herself in things that aren't her business.

Be very careful, she seems the type to arrange an "intervention," or worse.

These commenters saw Jessica’s persistence as clear disrespect for OP’s established boundaries

Substantial_Value359 − NTA you should always be upfront with your boundaries. It allows you to see early on how your partner reacts to them.

Your current partner does not respect your boundary. How are you going to respond to that?

1Sluggo − She is already boundary stomping. You’ve been a little uncomfy every step of the way, met the family a little early

and now she’s pushing to meet yours and not respecting your family dynamic. This behavior will not change. Choose wisely. NTA

These users warned that differing views on family boundaries could make the couple fundamentally incompatible

Historical_Agent9426 − NTA It sounds like you may not be compatible

Befub14435 − Nta- Honestly id consider this a fundamental difference and lean towards breaking up.

I wouldnt want to be with someone that didnt understand not all families are the same and the importance of boundaries.

Abusers are most often the people in our immediate circles. Id ask her what would make her cut contact with someone.

Couples therapy is an option but its a lot of work for a fairly common scenario that should be respected without effort.

AcanthisittaThat5746 − NTA It sounds like her caring and loving family has made it very difficult for her to comprehend not having a relationship with a family member.

If she can get her head around this and respect your boundary with your brother, it should be great.

If she really can’t, it’s not clear that things will work out with her.

It’s great she’s got such a great family, but she needs to understand that not every family member is a positive contributor to others’ lives.

These Redditors thought Jessica’s happy family background may prevent her from understanding toxic family dynamics

Adelucas − The problem with people from happy families where everyone gets on is that

they often have a fundamental lack of understanding of how terrible some family dynamics can be.

She's used to a family that talks, and works through problems so she truly can't grasp the idea you can't do the same with your brother.

In her mind if you only sat down and talked it out everything would be fine again. These people are dangerous.

Reddit is littered with stories of people who's partner has gone behind their back

and invited a parent or sibling to an event because they think it'll be an all is forgiven Hallmark moment.

I've a feeling your girlfriend is one of those from her reaction and constant niggling about it. If she was "sure babes,

you do what's right for you" and left it then I'd say it was all good. But she didn't.

She thinks people are fundamentally good and family is more important than everything. Which is fine for her family, but not for yours.

Be prepared for her to develop a relationship with your brother behind your back and then attempt to surprise you.

theprismaprincess − NTA but she will absolutely try to get in contact with your brother "on your behalf" and then will 100% cr

y about "but what about FaMilY" when called out on stomping over your boundaries.

Sounds like she cares more about the concept of family than the actual, real you. My condolences.

Is Jessica simply trying to understand an unfamiliar family dynamic, or has repeated questioning already crossed into disrespect? Share the verdict below.
