Man Knows Why He Suddenly Collapsed and Broke His Jaw, but Is Hiding the Truth From His Doctors

A sudden medical emergency is frightening enough when nobody knows what caused it. It becomes even more complicated when the person at the center of it knows exactly what happened but is too ashamed or afraid to explain the truth.

One Reddit user described collapsing at a train station on the way to class and waking up badly injured, eventually needing hospital treatment for a broken jaw. Doctors ran multiple tests because there seemed to be no obvious reason for someone in their late twenties to suddenly lose consciousness.

The poster, however, knew there was an explanation. Earlier that day, while overwhelmed and upset, they had made a dangerous decision involving medication and later chose not to tell anyone.

Now their family and medical team believe it may have been a mysterious accident, while the poster is carrying the truth alone. Scroll down to see why they feel unable to admit what really happened.

A hospitalized commuter hides the real reason behind a sudden collapse that left them seriously injured

'I know exactly why I passed out and broke my jaw but I don’t want to tell anyone'

Last Monday I was on a train going to class, the train stopped at a station and I started feeling like throwing up,

I just managed to stumble out of the doors and the next thing I remember is being on the floor,

with my face covered in blood while some employees were telling me to stay down and I was trying to put part of my jaw back in place.

For the next few days I was on the hospital, getting exams done and putting screws on my jaw, my face is still pretty sore and swollen.

The doctors, and my parents, wanted to know how someone in their late twenties, supposedly healthy, had just collapsed out of nowhere.

They monitored my heart, my brain and found nothing out of place, so they still don’t know how that happened. I know.

About an hour and a half before the accident I took ten pills consisting of three different medications,

all antidepressants, including two pills of one that always knocks me out at night, and, surprise, it knocked me out.

It was just a stupid decision I took when I was sad about someone I had met once, I obviously regret it,

but I couldn’t tell the doctors what happened because I’m a POS lazy cunt who is 29 and still lives with my parents,

and if they found out I was responsible for this the living situation would become unbearable,

so I just kept my mouth shut and will let everyone believe that it was just some freak occurrence.

Sometimes the most dangerous part of a crisis is not what happened in the moment, but what shame convinces someone to hide afterward.

The person in this story survived a frightening collapse, sustained a serious jaw injury, and then watched doctors search for an explanation while already knowing that they had taken far more medication than prescribed shortly beforehand.

Their fear of being judged by their parents is understandable. Yet keeping that information secret turns shame into a second medical risk.

Emotionally, the self-criticism is striking. Calling themselves lazy, worthless, or irresponsible suggests they are treating the overdose as proof of bad character rather than evidence that they were in significant distress. That distinction matters. Someone can regret an impulsive act without deserving humiliation for surviving it.

Fear of losing housing stability or making family life unbearable can also make silence feel safer than disclosure, even when that silence works against recovery.

Psychologist Kyle D. Killian, Ph.D., notes that people experiencing suicidal thoughts frequently hide them even from therapists and family members.

Research he reviews suggests shame, embarrassment, fear of judgment, hospitalization, and unwanted consequences are common reasons for nondisclosure. The problem is that secrecy can deepen isolation and leave the underlying crisis untreated.

There is also an immediate medical reason honesty matters here. Poison Control explains that antidepressant overdoses can cause drowsiness and fainting, but depending on the medication may also produce seizures, dangerous heart-rhythm changes, serotonin toxicity, or other complications.

Combining multiple serotonergic medications can increase risk, and treatment decisions depend heavily on knowing what was taken.

That makes the situation fundamentally different from hiding an embarrassing detail. Doctors were evaluating an unexplained loss of consciousness because they were missing clinically important information.

Whether the pills were taken with an intention to die, to escape emotional pain, or during an impulsive moment, the ingestion itself needs to be disclosed.

The safest next step is to tell the treating physician exactly what happened, including which medications were involved, and request a mental-health assessment. Fear of the parents’ reaction can be discussed separately; it should not determine what clinicians are allowed to know about the collapse.

Regret alone is not protection against another crisis. SAMHSA advises urgent help when someone is experiencing an overdose or immediate risk of self-harm.

The person survived something serious. The goal now should not be preserving the appearance of a mysterious accident. It should be making sure they survive the next difficult night too.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors urged OP to seek professional help and reminded them they deserve support

Warm-Perspective8271 − I am more concerned about how much you are struggling.

If these feelings come up frequently, pls get some help. ❤️29 is still very young. You can do amazong things. Good luck.

FutureJaimeGhost − It will be the hardest thing you ever do . ...but please ask for help.

Your parents don't have to know. You are worth the effort to feel better and get to a more stable place.

vapid-voice − please ask for help!

ResearcherNo4617 − You need to talk too someone and need urgent help. . im sorry

These commenters said OP can keep things private from family but should be honest with doctors

orange_lilly − It's okay to keep that from your parents, but you need to seek therapy to address why you even chose to take meds in the first place.

Also, you should probably tell your doctor. No good in lying to them, and they dont have to tell your parents since youre an adult.

It only hurts you to lie to your doctor

No-Sandwich1511 − Please tell the doctors, you dont need to tell your parents and they doctors can't tell them anything you dont consent to.

Please also dont refer to. yourself in such a negative way.

Hopefully the doctors can work with you and point you in the right direction to seak help. Wishing you all the best.

These users questioned how the hospital failed to discover what caused OP’s medical emergency

Develyna − The hospital didn’t run a toxicology screen? They didn’t pull any bloodwork?

If they truly don’t know, they’re an insanely negligent hospital and need to be heavily investigated I’m sorry you’ve been struggling.

Please seek professional help.

That level of sadness from a singular meeting is not typical, and you deserve space to process your emotions and responses without judgment

TheNerveofdatGuy − They would have tested you for all kinds of drugs? You would have been knocked out for hours as well and they didn't notice? Bad doctors.

This commenter suggested concealing the true cause from others, though the safer advice is to be truthful with medical professionals

Churlish_Performer − Here's your line OP: I was feeling sick anyhow,  I knew I needed to throw up but I didn't want to do that on the train

so I beared down so as to hold it back.   started to get dizzy and passed out.

Dr suggested it was a vasovagal syncope. Use that EXACT PHRASE! Do not deviate - and ffs, lay off the f__king pills,  Jesus.

These Redditors reassured OP that 29 is still young and their current circumstances do not define their future

Vazo-vaygul sing-cuppy. That's an ICD code, a real thing,  it's untreatable but TOTALLY understandable thing to have happen,

and it covers your ass in this situation.

Zill-Under-The-Tree − Please be careful, and no one is worth this much,

plus it's nothing bad living with your parents, we all have our circumstances, just take care of yourself.

The most important confession here is not necessarily one the man owes his parents. It is information his healthcare team needs.

Routine toxicology testing has real limitations, and clinicians cannot reliably reconstruct every medication exposure from laboratory work alone.

Rather than inventing another diagnosis, the safer path is to speak privately with a clinician, disclose what happened, and ask for help addressing why it happened.

The broken jaw may heal first. The distress behind the decision deserves treatment too.
