Friend Borrows a Car, Gets an $85 Parking Ticket, Then Sends the Owner a $22 Gas Request

Lending your car to a longtime friend usually comes with an unspoken expectation that they will return it without creating expensive problems. But when unexpected costs appear afterward, figuring out who should pay can test even an established friendship.

One Reddit user lent their car to a college friend who needed it for a day to move furniture into his new home. Everything seemed perfectly normal until an $85 parking ticket arrived in the mail, issued while the friend had possession of the vehicle. When asked to cover the fine, he initially went quiet.

Then, instead of simply addressing the ticket, he responded with a payment request of his own for $22.40 in gas he had voluntarily purchased during the trip. Suddenly, what looked like a straightforward parking fine became an argument about who actually owed whom. Scroll down to see why the car owner refused to send him the money.

A car owner clashes with a friend who responds to an $85 parking ticket by demanding gas money

'AITA for refusing to send my friend the $22 he wants for gas?'

My friend borrowed my car on the 29th to move some furniture into his new place.

We've known each other since college so I said yes without really thinking about it. He had it from about 10 in the morning until the evening.

A parking ticket turned up in my mail last week. $85, permit zone (about 3 blocks from his building), dated the afternoon he had it.

I sent him a photo of it and he said "you should have told me that street needs a permit."

He isn't wrong, I never mentioned it and I had no idea that's where he was going to park. Then I asked if he could cover it and he went...

What came back wasn't about the ticket at all. He sent me a request for $22.40 with a photo of a gas receipt attached,

for filling the tank while he had it, plus a message saying he'd been meaning to send it for a week and thought we should "settle everything at once."

I never ONCE asked him to put gas in that car. He topped it up on his own and didn't mention it to me until the day I brought up...

Was that supposed to have been a bill the whole time?

I told him I'm not sending $22 to somebody who owes me $85

Few things make a favor feel regrettable faster than discovering that generosity has somehow become an invoice. The OP lent a longtime friend a car for an entire day so he could move furniture.

Later, an $85 parking ticket arrived from the exact afternoon the friend had the vehicle. Instead of simply acknowledging the mistake, the friend responded by producing a previously unmentioned $22.40 gas receipt. What began as a straightforward question about responsibility suddenly became an argument over who supposedly owed whom.

The friend’s defensiveness is understandable in one narrow sense. Nobody enjoys receiving an unexpected $85 expense, and he may genuinely have believed replacing fuel was part of being a considerate borrower. But the timing matters. He apparently never mentioned reimbursement until the parking ticket appeared.

That makes the gas purchase feel less like an agreed expense and more like something retroactively converted into a debt to reduce his own responsibility.

There is also an important difference between the two costs. Filling the tank was voluntary unless the friends had previously agreed otherwise.

The parking ticket resulted from where the borrower chose to leave the car while it was under his control. Saying the owner should have warned him about permit parking shifts responsibility strangely. Unless the owner instructed him to park there, drivers generally remain responsible for checking signs and restrictions where they choose to stop.

Social psychology helps explain why this dispute feels bigger than $22. The American Psychological Association defines social exchange theory as the idea that relationships involve exchanges of costs and benefits within an understood sense of fairness. Closely related is the reciprocity norm: people generally expect favors and benefits to be returned in a reasonably balanced way.

Psychologist Marisa Franco similarly notes that satisfying friendships depend on reciprocity, although fairness does not require every individual favor to be calculated dollar for dollar. When exchanges begin feeling persistently unequal, resentment tends to replace generosity.

That distinction fits this situation perfectly. Lending the car was a favor. Adding some fuel could reasonably be viewed as the friend’s way of returning that favor. Treating the fuel as a reimbursement claim only after creating a larger expense changes the emotional meaning of the gesture.

The cleanest solution would be to stop turning every cost into competing invoices. The friend should cover the parking ticket he incurred. If the OP wants to reimburse the gas afterward, that can be discussed separately based on what they normally consider fair.

Friendships survive favors because people trust each other not to exploit them. Once every act of generosity becomes ammunition in the next disagreement, the relationship starts functioning less like friendship and more like bookkeeping.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors said filling the tank was basic courtesy after borrowing the truck

cat-pernicus − He borrows your truck to move, putting gas in is the least he could do as a thank you,

and the parking fee is his problem, he’s the one who parked it and should’ve checked where he was parking

courtneyisfakeaf − NTA He should put gas in for using it, AND pay for the ticket

jgardner827 − Nta and lmao it’s basic common courtesy to return it with either a filled or same level gas tank

These commenters stressed that the borrower was responsible for where he parked and any resulting ticket.

WasWawa − NTA. I suggest something like, "I'm really kind of surprised that you would think

that I'm responsible for buying the gas that you used when you borrowed my car.

It is common sense not to park the car where you are likely to get a violation, and while you are using the vehicle, you are responsible for any violations.

Also, it's common courtesy to return a borrowed vehicle with a full tank of gas in appreciation for being allowed to borrow it in the first place.

Not only am I not going to reimburse you for the gas, but I expect payment for the violation for when you parking my car

where it doesn't belong, and suggest you rent a car for any future needs. " This guy is not your friend.

Otherwise_Turnip7135 − Wait, I'm sorry: his argument is that, as part of lending him your car,

you should have researched all the streets in the general area of his new apartment and let him know which ones need permits and which don't? ?

And that, because you chose not to act as his personal parking-law concierge, you are therefore responsible for paying his parking ticket?? This friend is TRASH. NTA.

These commenters saw the money as a relatively cheap lesson and advised never lending to him again

JackB041334 − Tell him to send $60 and call it a day. I wouldn’t ever lend him anything again though

Capable_Mood_4754 − $85 is a cheap lesson, pay it and forget that p__ck.

These users mocked the idea that OP should have researched parking rules for the friend

Main_Insect_3144 − Why are you in charge of informing him of the parking restrictions near his apartment?

And he wants you to pay for the gas for his move? NTA I would pay the ticket and call it quits on your friendship.

What a jerk. Tell him next time he can rent a Uhaul and see how much that costs.

Probably more than the $107.40 total for his stupidity.

ThrowRA_VeiledInVice − My friend borrowed my car. .. He's not your friend. He's an AH.

TheStanker − That ticket may suck out loud, but it’s a cheap lesson about who this friend really is.

The gas receipt is probably the weakest part of the borrower’s argument.

Major etiquette guides treat refueling a borrowed vehicle as the borrower’s responsibility or courtesy, not an expense automatically passed back to the owner.

The parking ticket’s legal liability cannot be determined without knowing the jurisdiction, but the moral responsibility is easier to see: the borrower chose where he parked.

Perhaps the better lesson costs exactly $85.

Next time this friend needs to move furniture, a rental counter can explain the fuel policy in writing.
