Woman Finds a Stranger Living in the Bedroom Assigned to Her Lease, but the New Roommate Refuses to Move

Moving into a first apartment comes with enough uncertainty without discovering that someone else has already settled into the bedroom listed under your name. Add conflicting information from the leasing agent, and a simple roommate arrangement can become complicated before everyone has even officially moved in.

One 21-year-old Reddit user signed a lease for a four-bedroom apartment with two friends and asked the leasing agent to find a fourth tenant. Months later, without any meaningful update, they discovered that the mystery roommate had already moved in and chosen room A, the bedroom specifically assigned to the poster on her lease.

When contacted, the new roommate explained that the agent had told her tenants could choose or switch rooms freely. She was also already settled and reluctant to move again. Scroll down to see why the poster is wondering whether insisting on the room listed in her lease would make her unreasonable.

'AITA for asking the girl who moved into my room to move out?'

Any names mentioned are fake

I (F21) am moving into an apartment for the first time this upcoming fall.

I recruited two of my friends to room with me and at the end of April, we signed the lease for a four-bedroom apartment (lease beginning in August).

However, we were unable to find a fourth person to fill the remaining room. I asked the leasing agent, Kyle, if he could find someone for us, and he agreed.

Nearly three months passed and I hadn't heard anything about the fourth roommate from Kyle,

so I reached out to him again and asked if he found anyone to fill that spot. He ghosted me.

We only found out we had a fourth roommate when one of my friends moved in a couple weeks later

and found the mystery roommate already living in the apartment.

My friend assured me the roommate was chill, but that she had moved into "the nice bedroom". For context, the rooms are labeled A, B, C, and D.

I asked my friend if the "nice bedroom" was A as I had suspected, and she confirmed it was.

In my lease, it states I was assigned to room A, so the mystery roommate had moved into my room.

I reached out to the roommate over Instagram

(she had somehow found my account and requested to follow me) and told her she accidentally moved into my room.

The roommate informed me that Kyle said there were no assigned rooms, and that as long as it was one person to one room,

the tenants could switch around rooms how they like. Kyle never told me or my friends this piece of information.

I responded back telling her that and asked if she could move out of room A, as that is the room legally assigned to me per the lease.

I also offered to help her move as well as deep clean room D because that's what she did for room A.

She responded with a very long message that essentially said she appreciated the offer, but even if I cleaned and helped her move,

she would have to do it over again because she's very particular with how her personal spaces are,

and she's too busy with her sorority stuff to have time to re-clean and move everything before the semester begins.

She brought up Kyle again, mentioning how he said it was "up to us" regarding the rooms.

She said if she had known from the beginning that I wanted the room, she wouldn't have had any problem with it.

TBH I found her bringing up Kyle's words again a bit incriminating; if Kyle told her it was "up to us"

regarding switching around the assigned rooms, why did she not try to consult us before choosing a room?

Other friends of mine are encouraging me to push for my room back, but the roommate seems really settled on the staying there

(she's been living there for nearly 3 weeks now). Would I be the a__hole for continuing to push her?

Few conflicts become awkward faster than discovering that two people have been promised different versions of the same thing. The OP signed a lease assigning her to Bedroom A, while the new roommate says the leasing agent told her rooms were effectively first-come, first-served and could be rearranged among tenants.

Neither woman appears to have created that confusion. Yet because management failed to communicate clearly, they are now being pushed into fighting each other over the consequences.

The OP is reasonable for wanting to continue pursuing the room. A written lease stating “Room A” creates a much stronger expectation than an informal statement from an employee that tenants may choose among themselves.

That does not necessarily settle the legal question without knowing the jurisdiction and complete lease terms, but it does mean she is not being petty for treating the assignment seriously. The leasing company should be required to explain the discrepancy.

The new roommate’s reluctance is understandable too. After three weeks of cleaning, arranging, and personalizing the room, moving no longer feels like simply choosing another empty bedroom.

Psychologist Frank McAndrew explains that people become territorial because personal spaces help communicate identity and provide control over their environment. Bedrooms, apartments, offices, and similar spaces can quickly begin to feel psychologically “ours” once we occupy and personalize them.

Behavioral economics offers another piece of the puzzle. Research on the endowment effect shows that people tend to value something more once they feel they possess it, making surrendering it feel like a loss even when they had no strong attachment beforehand. Behavioral economist Gizem Saka, Ph.D., describes how this attachment can form surprisingly quickly.

That may explain the roommate’s resistance, but it does not mean the OP must absorb the consequences. Her offer to help move everything and deep-clean Bedroom D was actually a thoughtful attempt to reduce the inconvenience.

The more questionable part is the leasing agent’s behavior. Research summarized by the American Psychological Association shows that people react strongly to unfair procedures and inadequate explanations, sometimes even when the eventual outcome itself is acceptable. Clear, consistent processes matter because they prevent exactly this kind of resentment.

So the OP should keep pushing—but primarily through management, not through repeated arguments with the roommate. She should document the lease assignment, ask the leasing office for a written explanation, and require them to resolve the conflict they created.

The roommate may understandably hate moving. But being settled for three weeks does not automatically erase someone else’s documented claim to the room.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors warned OP could be liable for damage to the room assigned on their lease

catladyfa − NTA, either she needs to switch rooms or you need to switch leases. You’d be liable for any damage she does in your assigned room.

cuzguys − If in fact your name has been assigned on any paper work to room A you could possibly be responsible for any damages to said room.

watermelonlollies − I’m guessing you all have individual leases (is this American campus communities? Lol)

and if so then you need to be in your specific room because when you or they move out,

the room on the lease assigned to you is what they will inspect for damages. If she causes damages to the room you alone will be liable. NTA.

Tell her she is violating the lease and if she doesn’t move you will go to the leasing office and escalate it.

These commenters said the written lease should settle the dispute and the leasing office should enforce it

Fair_Discipline_1875 − Get the leasing office involved. If your lease states room A is assigned to you, there won’t be a problem getting her out of room A.

BeeJackson − NTA - You’d better tell her to move her stuff or you’ll report her hit squatting. Your lease says A.

If Kyle doesn’t fix it then you have grounds to terminate the lease. Tell him if he doesn’t fix it you will go over his head and have grounds to...

Imagine if you rented a whole apartment then discovered someone living there already and the landlord does nothing by?

lisalef − NTA. If the lease specifies rooms, you need to follow that.

These users advised OP to firmly tell the roommate to vacate the assigned room rather than negotiate further

BrookeBaranoff − Nta.   You don’t need a he said she said when it is written in a lease.   You pull out the lease.

You say “this is my leased space, you are trespassing. Take it up with kyle but get out or I call the police with proof this is my space. ”

Also for her needing things a specific way; so do you.

You need to be in your leased room.

When I pick the window seat I am not giving it up to the person who sits in it while I am waiting to board the plane.

I say move, and I call the flight attendant if needed.

And when they’ve made a big deal about moving their s__t out of the overhead i point at my ticket and say “then you shouldn’t have sat here. ”

Same thing on a bigger scale for you.   They made the choice, knowing they would have to resettle if I wasn’t a pushover.

panic_bread − NTA. Don’t continue to “push” her. Just tell her what’s what.

Let her know that you have a lease for that room and she’s going to have to vacate it.

Don’t leave it up to her or give her any wiggle room. Let her know you will be moving in on X date and that she needs to be out...

These Redditors felt the roommate deliberately claimed the better room hoping OP would eventually give in

Remote-Equipment-340 − 3 weeks is not a lot. Tell her that it is tough luck and she could have talked with you about it.

When it is a decision of the roommates together, it still is not a first come first choose situation.

she just wanted the better room and hoped you would cave NTA

Mytweezer − Info - do all four of you have separate leases? Are rooms assigned in each lease?

It would be very weird if there were 4 leases and 3 of them specified which room and the 4th did not.

If her lease doesn't specify, she did nothing wrong. This is all for Kyle to work out.

So YWBTA if you harass her instead of clarifying with Kyle wtf happened and what he plans to do about it.

Should the roommate move immediately, or should Kyle be the one answering every uncomfortable question first?
