Manager Gets Pulled Into a Meeting for Refusing to Share a Coworker’s Domestic Violence Details

Workplace friendships can get complicated when personal crises overlap with professional responsibilities. Being a manager may come with certain reporting expectations, but that does not automatically mean every private conversation belongs in the hands of upper management.

One Reddit user described being pulled into a meeting after a fellow manager briefly confided in them about a serious incident at home. The coworker was upset, needed someone to talk to, and shared information that was largely unrelated to work.

The poster encouraged her to contact the police and let management know only about the schedule changes that would affect the workplace.

When their boss later asked what had been discussed behind the closed office door, the poster declined to reveal the personal details. Days later, that decision became the problem. Scroll down to see why management accused them of withholding information they believed was never theirs to share.

A manager is reprimanded for refusing to reveal a coworker’s private domestic violence disclosure to their boss

Manager Gets Pulled Into a Meeting for Refusing to Share a Coworker’s Domestic Violence Details
not the actual photo

'boss pulled me in for a meeting about disclosing coworkers private details'

title basically says it all; i got pulled into a meeting with my boss because she was mad i didn’t disclose another coworkers personal life details.

a work friend (we are both managers) came into my office and closed the door and told me about a domestic violence incident that

occurred the night before. she was very upset and needed someone to talk to.

we were in my office for less than 5 minutes because we had a meeting to get to.

i advised her to call the police and also notify the managers only because her schedule would have to change slightly because there are kids involved.

my boss later asked why i was in the office with her with the door closed.

i mentioned that i didnt feel comfortable sharing what i was told but my coworker would be talking to them at some point that day.

fast forward a few days and i got pulled into the office in trouble for not disclosing her personal details ???

aside from her schedule changing about 30 minutes on each end, NOTHING she told me was work related AND doesn’t affect her performance..

what the hell ??? the perception is that i’m hiding important information from management. absolutely wild.

Sometimes being trustworthy at work means knowing the difference between information management actually needs and information that simply happens to be personal.

A distressed coworker disclosed a domestic violence incident privately, and the OP listened, encouraged her to contact police, and advised her to notify management about the small scheduling change the situation would require.

From the OP’s perspective, that was compassion with boundaries. Being reprimanded days later for not repeating the entire story understandably felt like being punished for respecting another person’s confidence.

The emotional stakes are especially high with domestic violence. Survivors may already feel frightened, ashamed, watched, or uncertain about whom they can trust.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline advises coworkers to approach these conversations confidentially, avoid pressuring someone to disclose more than they want, listen without judgment, and respect the survivor’s decisions.

Its recent workplace research found that 53% of survivors who did not disclose abuse to employers cited fears such as discrimination, job loss, or retaliation.

That makes management’s response worth examining. Workplaces Respond, an initiative developed with Futures Without Violence, specifically emphasizes that privacy is critical for employees experiencing domestic or sexual violence.

Its guidance recommends limiting information to a “need-to-know” basis when disclosure is necessary for accommodations and warns that unnecessary disclosure can be emotionally harmful and, in some circumstances, create safety risks.

There is, however, one important complication. The OP is also a manager. Depending on the employer’s policies, jurisdiction, whether children were endangered, and whether the incident creates a workplace safety concern, managers can sometimes have reporting obligations that ordinary coworkers do not.

Workplaces Respond recommends that organizations explicitly tell supervisors when they are mandatory reporters and what must be escalated, rather than leaving employees to guess.

That is where this employer appears to have failed. If the OP had a duty to report certain information, the appropriate response was to explain the policy clearly: what must be reported, to whom, and why. Simply accusing someone of “hiding information” teaches managers that every private conversation should immediately be passed upward.

The OP should now ask for that reporting policy in writing and clarify exactly what responsibilities come with the management role. Future disclosures can then begin with an honest warning about any limits to confidentiality.

A healthy workplace should make it possible for employees to seek support without assuming their entire personal crisis automatically becomes management property.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors advised asking the manager to put the demand in writing for protection later

BoomZhakaLaka − If they would put that in writing for you, somehow, that'd help you tremendously with any future dispute or disciplinary measures

Deansdiatribes − Ask for that in writing. I suspect it will end there suddenly never to return.

Angry_Pterodactyl − "Can I please get that in writing in the event I need to refer back to it later? "

These users shared experiences showing how quickly private information can spread once others start discussing it

OpheliaRainGalaxy − I had a landlady like that once.

I called and asked to have my locks changed, had the appropriate court paperwork saying roughly why it was required.

Soon as I got the call saying my new keys were in my mailbox, I hurried home to get my life back in order.

And funny thing, about half the neighbors stopped me while I was taking out trash or in shopping or whatever,

to say the same things. Starting with the landlady had called to tell them my business and ask what they knew about the situation.

It turned out to be a bit of a blessing though, because the rest of it was "I had no idea you lived there,

I feel so bad for not knowing what you were going through so close by, I'll keep an eye out for that no good ex of yours and come running...

So I ended up with basically my own personal private security force for a bit there.

Whoknows2736 − I do HR and part of my job is being discrete. I tell the people who need to know things when they need to know them.

It's a small place and some conversations have to happen behind closed doors or after others have left for the day. That's part of the job.

This job knows that I talk with people when I can.

I've also got griped at before because I wouldn't say what someone and I were talking about.

I did some research for them and was trying to help but the manager was upset I wouldn't tell them what we discussed.

It was a personal matter and they didn't need it spread around and I knew it would be.

In the long run it didn't matter, they found out and I don't know how it worked out because I wasn't there to see the ending.

That's not the reason I'm not there anymore.

These commenters said a coworker’s private personal matter was none of the manager’s business

Cultural-Answer-321 − It's none of her damn business.

paintrain10 − It's not your job to spread someone's else's personal business/matters around the work place.

It's how rumors start. Your boss could do well to understand personal matters.

gargravarr2112 − "So by your own logic, you're okay with me disclosing the contents of this meeting to your boss? "

A closed-door meeting is universally treated as confidential.

Well done for not breaking your coworker's trust and I hope she gets the support she needs. Your boss is a POS for not understanding that.

These commenters noted that legal or safety reporting duties may apply in limited situations without requiring workplace gossip

cadillacactor − You don't owe the manager anything. One potential caveat to this scenario:

If you're in a state that has mandatory reporters for harm to/around a child,

you might need to call your equivalent hotline for Child Protective Services to make a report.

You're not investigating or verifying because that's CPS' job, but you're letting them know it happened. Clarify your local laws first.

If you are in such a state and if it is found that you knew but did not report, there can be fines/punishment for ones who don't disclose the abuse.

At least in my state, ALL adults are mandatory reporters for harm of any type directed at a child

as well as harm witnessed by a child (domestic violence in front of a child is also a form of child abuse).

I would let the person know upon speaking with me that this is a conversation about a mandatory report issue

and invite them to stay with me to help make the call (attempting to empower them to self-advocate).

And I still wouldn't tell my boss, because it's not their business.

JustmyOpinion444 − The only reason my work knew I had a DV issue, was because I got a no contact/protective order. And I had to give it to HR and...

Was the manager protecting reasonable privacy, or should managers automatically escalate serious personal disclosures?
