Motorcyclists Pay This Person to Wear Their Stiff Leather Gear Before They Ever Put It On

Some side hustles start with careful planning, while others begin with a joke that unexpectedly solves a real problem. If people dislike doing something enough, there is often someone willing to pay to skip the uncomfortable part.

One person discovered that after joking with a motorcyclist who was struggling to break in a brand-new leather jacket and riding boots. The gear was so stiff that moving comfortably meant dealing with days of rubbing, restricted movement, and sore spots. For $30, the poster offered to wear everything around the house for a few days and soften it naturally.

The rider agreed, and what seemed like a ridiculous one-time favor slowly turned into a regular service. Now people drop off new leather gear, and the poster gets paid to condition, flex, wear, and sanitize it before returning it. Keep reading to see how this bizarre household routine became a surprisingly reliable source of extra money.

A biker turns breaking in painfully stiff leather gear for other riders into a profitable side hustle

not the actual photo

'I make $200 a week breaking in stiff leather motorcycle boots and jackets for people who hate the 2-week friction pain'

It started totally by accident. A guy at a local bike meetup bought a heavy leather track jacket and stiff riding boots,

but was complaining he could barely bend his elbows or ankles without getting brutal blisters.

I joked that I’d wear them around my house and flex the joints for a few days for $30. He actually took me up on it..

Fast forward a few months, and it’s become my weirdest steady side income.. The breakdown:

-People drop off brand-new, rock-hard leather gear.

-I apply a light leather conditioner, then spend 3–4 days doing basic household chores,

walking up stairs, and doing mobility stretches in the gear to build natural flex creases.

-I thoroughly sanitize the inside lining with anti-bacterial gear spray before returning it.

I average around $150–$200 a week just looking like an over-armored mannequin vacuuming my living room.

Riders love skipping the painful break-in phase, and I get paid to wear heavy gear around the house..

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever gotten paid to do that sounds totally unhinged until you explain the logic?

Some of the best small businesses sound ridiculous until the problem they solve is explained. Paying someone to walk around their house in another person’s motorcycle boots and jacket seems absurd at first.

But riders are not really paying $30 for someone to wear their clothes. They are paying to skip several uncomfortable days of stiffness, rubbing, limited movement, and repeated break-in sessions before expensive leather gear becomes pleasant to use.

That distinction explains why the service apparently found customers without much deliberate planning. The original rider already owned the product he wanted; what he disliked was the friction between buying it and comfortably enjoying it. The OP accidentally discovered that this inconvenience had monetary value.

Business research has repeatedly found that reducing customer effort can be surprisingly valuable.

Harvard Business Review researchers Matthew Dixon, Lara Ponomareff, and Anastasia Milgramm argue that customers often care less about elaborate “delight” than businesses assume. Frequently, they simply want their problem solved with as little effort as possible. Reducing hassle can therefore generate considerable loyalty and satisfaction.

That principle maps unusually well onto this little leather-breaking operation. Riders could wear their own stiff boots around the house, climb stairs, flex the leather, tolerate hotspots, and wait for the material to soften.

Instead, some evidently consider $30 a reasonable price for outsourcing several days of tedious discomfort. Consumer-behavior research similarly notes that willingness to pay rises when customers perceive that a service provides meaningful value to them.

There is also something appealing about how organically the side income developed. The OP did not begin with a complicated business plan. A joke solved one person’s problem, word presumably spread, and repetition revealed that the problem was shared by others.

The American Psychological Association notes that side ventures can provide financial flexibility while allowing people to develop unexpected skills or test new income streams without immediately replacing their main employment.

The only important caution is professionalism. Because motorcycle clothing can be expensive protective equipment, customers should know exactly what conditioner, cleaning products, and break-in methods will be used. Anything that might damage leather, protective components, fit, warranties, or hygiene should be agreed upon beforehand.

Otherwise, this is a surprisingly elegant microbusiness. The OP found an unpleasant task that other people could easily perform themselves but strongly preferred not to—and became willing to perform it repeatedly for money.

That is often where unusual businesses begin: not by inventing something nobody has seen before, but by noticing a small annoyance everyone else has quietly accepted.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors were amazed by how unusual and entertaining the side hustle sounded

texan_robot − Now this is the s__t im here for

______Goose − That’s a f__king crazy one.

These commenters compared the work to other niche services involving breaking in expensive gear

SirFentonOfDog − The Queen had a lady who did this for all her shoes. That’s rich people s__t if I’ve ever heard it.

RunnerAtThird − Similar side hustle options breaking in leather baseball gloves.

These users responded with playful curiosity and jokes about the person behind the business

NJHostageNegotiator − I have to ask, sorry--are you male or female? As Albert Popwell said, "I gots to know. "

Reptillianaire_ − You should call your business "Leather Daddy" and make a website for extra cash

ProcrastinationSite − Wow, how do you get more business?

These Redditors were curious about the practical challenges of wearing and breaking in other people’s items

BluelunarStar − Awesome!! Do you get blisters from it?

DeaditeQueenLivs − What do you do if someone is a different size than you?

If something is too big, then you’re not going to be able to give it the flex it might need and if they’re smaller than you, you can’t get the...

tuttero − Maybe buy 2 mannequins, reinforce the joints, connect to a contraption that simulates movement 🤓

Would anyone pay $30 to skip several days of stiff leather misery?

Judging by these customers, apparently yes.
