Baker Shares Her Cookie Recipe After Friend Sells It As A Fake Family Secret

Creative work can become complicated when something you made is shared, repackaged, and presented in a completely different way. What starts as a simple favor between friends can turn into a conflict about honesty, credit, and personal boundaries.

The original poster (OP) created a cookie recipe that became popular among friends and eventually shared it with someone she trusted. Years later, that friend started selling the cookies at a farmers market and claimed they were a secret family recipe passed down through generations.

After discovering the story was not true, OP decided to share the recipe publicly without directly naming her friend. Read on to see why this decision caused tension between them.

'AITA for posting my cookie recipe after my friend started selling it as her grandma’s?'

I bake a lot and a few years ago I came up with this brown butter espresso cookie recipe that all my friends love.

Around that time I made a good amount of money messing around on pump fun and finally bought myself a proper stand mixer and some other kitchen stuff,

so I was baking basically every weekend. One of my friends asked for the cookie recipe so I sent it to her, no big deal.

She recently started selling baked stuff at a farmers market and I found out she was selling the cookies for $5 each.

Honestly didn't care until I saw the sign next to them saying "Grandma Rose's secret recipe, passed down 3 generations.".

Her grandma is alive. I've met her. She doesn't bake lol.

I asked my friend about it and she basically said the story helps sell them and asked me not to say anything.

Then some local food page posted her booth and mentioned the family recipe and she reposted it saying her grandma would be proud.

That annoyed me way more than it probably should have, so I posted the recipe on my Instagram with an old picture from 2022

and said since people keep asking, here it is. I never mentioned my friend.

We have a lot of mutual friends though and people figured it out pretty fast.

Someone commented on her post asking which generation of her family I was and now she's pissed.

She says I embarrassed her and hurt her business when I could've just asked her to stop using the grandma story.

Which I guess is true, and I definitely knew some people would connect the dots.. AITA?

This situation was never really about a cookie recipe. The recipe was only the surface issue. The bigger conflict was about ownership, honesty, and using someone else’s work to create a story that was not true.

The OP had spent time developing a brown butter espresso cookie recipe that became popular among friends. She shared the recipe with a friend casually, not expecting it to become a commercial product. Later, she discovered that the friend was selling the cookies at a farmers market while advertising them as “Grandma Rose’s secret recipe, passed down 3 generations.”

Selling a recipe someone received from a friend is already a complicated topic. Recipes are often shared, adapted, and recreated. Unless there is a formal agreement, simply using a recipe someone gave you may not always be viewed the same way as stealing a physical possession.

However, the situation changed because the friend did not just sell cookies. She created a personal history around them that connected the recipe to a family tradition that apparently did not exist.

The OP confronted her privately first. According to the post, the friend admitted the story was meant to help sales and asked her not to reveal the truth. That response likely made the issue feel less like a misunderstanding and more like intentional deception.

When the OP later posted the recipe publicly, she did not name her friend or directly accuse her. However, she also knew mutual friends would probably recognize the connection. That is where the situation becomes more complicated.

There were two separate choices available. One option was to privately demand that the friend stop using the false backstory. Another option was to share the recipe publicly and allow people to make their own conclusions. The OP chose the second approach, which created public consequences even without naming anyone.

At the same time, the friend’s complaint that she was embarrassed ignores an important detail: the embarrassment came from a claim she made publicly. A business built around a false story is always vulnerable if someone who knows the truth speaks up.

Trust is especially important for small businesses because customers are not only buying a product. They are often buying the story behind it. A family recipe, a grandmother’s tradition, or a personal origin story can become part of the product’s identity. When that story is invented, it changes the relationship between the seller and the customer.

The more constructive conversation would have been for the friend to acknowledge where the recipe came from and create her own story around it. She could have said she learned the recipe from a friend or developed her own version. Authenticity does not require pretending something was passed down through generations.

The cookie itself may be delicious, but the disagreement is really about whether a good product needs a fake history to succeed.

Both people had choices that affected the outcome. The friend created the misleading story, while the OP chose a public response instead of a private resolution. But the original problem began when someone else’s creation was used to build a business around a story that was not true.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors criticized her dishonesty and said she should take responsibility

PathlessMaster − NTA. Liars shouldn't prosper

Spookendocker1 − She got caught in a lie, and YOU embarrassed HER? Classic DARVO - Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim & Offender.

Dishonest people often pitch a fit when they get caught. Personally I love the way you handled this.

Annual_Government_80 − She was profiting off of something that you created. And she was lying to her customers.

She’s not a very nice person. I hope you take it as a blessing that she may be out of your life.

These users argued that using someone’s recipe for profit without permission was unfair

SnarkyUnicorn23 − Your ‘friend’ is a user, and never would have come clean if you didn’t post your recipe.

I think she owes you a cut of her sales since she would have NOTHING without YOUR. recipe.

withcatlikegrace − She should be embarrassed that she lied And using your recipe for commercial purposes without your permission is tantamount to stealing.

Shame on her - she’s not your friend.

Trick_Few − NTA Your friend stole your intellectual property. It’s a big business No-No.

These commenters were interested in getting the recipe and joked about wanting to try it

Mother-Teaching472 − NTA She deserved it! Can I please have the recipe?

freddbare − We all came for one thing....

chilton25 − NTA (And may I admit that I was sad to not see the recipe shared here as well? 😂 fingers are crossed its shared, because it sounds amazing)

JHawk444 − NTA She gave credit to her grandma instead of you. That is not okay. Don't give her anymore cookie recipes.

Was posting the recipe a fair way to set the record straight, or should the baker have handled everything privately first? And would a “secret family recipe” claim make you more likely to buy a product? Share your thoughts below!
