Bridesmaids Get Hit With a $2,800 Bachelorette Bill After Months of Silence, and the Bride Finally Gets Pushback

by Leona Pham
October 18, 2026
in Social Issues

Bachelorette trips can be expensive, especially when the destination involves flights, villas, and several days of activities.

But there is a big difference between agreeing to an expensive trip and being handed an expensive bill after nobody bothered to ask what you could afford.

OP was invited to her friend’s destination bachelorette trip in St. Maarten and knew from the beginning that it would not be cheap.

When the bride mentioned an early estimate of $2,700 per person, OP openly said that amount was a lot and the bride agreed to see if the cost could be reduced.

Then came three months of complete silence.

Suddenly, the bridesmaids received an itinerary for a luxury trip costing $2,800 each, with a deposit due within one week.

Flights and several other expenses were not even included.

OP felt blindsided and began wondering whether she was being unreasonable for refusing to finance someone else’s dream vacation.

But the situation took an unexpected turn after she decided to speak up.

A bridesmaid is stunned when a luxury bachelorette trip costs far more than the budget she warned the bride about

Bridesmaids Get Hit With a $2,800 Bachelorette Bill After Months of Silence, and the Bride Finally Gets Pushback
not the actual photo

'Am I wrong for being furious? MOHs planned a $2,800 bachelorette trip in secret for 3 months after being warned it was too expensive?'

My friend (the bride) has two MOH’s. I know them both personally. The

bachelorette trip is scheduled for 8 months from now in St. Maarten. I

know St. Maarten is a premium destination and I never expected it to be a

budget trip, but what happened next is pure insanity.

3 Months Ago: The bride mentioned to me that the MOHs got a quote for

the trip that was around $2,700 per person. She asked how I felt about it

and I was honest with her. I told the bride directly that $2,700 was a

massive amount of money. The bride agreed with me and said she would

see if the planners could bring the cost down.

The Last 3 Months: Total radio silence. No group chats were made. No

updates were given. Crucially, neither of the MOHs ever asked the

bridesmaids what our budgets were. They just planned in a complete silo.

Last week: Realizing the trip is 8 months out and we’ve heard nothing, I

texted one of the MOHs for a casual update. She told me they were "done

planning" and would be sending out the itinerary and costs shortly.

Today: They drop the bomb in the group chat. They didn't actually plan

anything themselves—they outsourced the entire trip to a luxury travel

agency ("Luxe Tribes") and passed the inflated bill directly to us.

The text read: "Hi ladies! ... The link attached includes a brief itinerary... We

have been working with Luxe Tribes to make it all happen. The link includes

a payment portal where you pay your deposit and set your payment plan.

The deposit is $150 and must be made by August 21st (ONE WEEK FROM

TODAY) to secure the villa. The remaining balance is split into 6

installments...". The total cost? $2,800.

Not only did they completely ignore my budget warning from three

months ago, but the price actually went UP. They kept us entirely in the

dark, locked in a luxury package, and are now demanding a deposit on a

single week's notice. $2,800 doesn't even include flights, drinks, or tips—

this is easily a $4,000 trip when all is said and done.

I feel like they deliberately gatekept the information because they knew it

was too expensive and didn't want anyone "ruining" their luxury aesthetic

vision before it was locked in. It feels incredibly manipulative to present a

done deal and try to corner us into financing a bachelorette party.. IAm I

completely justified in being pissed off, or is this just how people plan

bachelorettes now?.

Edit 1 08/15/26:

I appreciate all of the replies. I didn’t expect this post to gain so much

traction. I’ll answer a few questions and address some things I saw.. 1.) This

isn’t fake/AI, this is real life.

2.) I’m aware I don’t have to go. However, this is a bridesmaids sub and

that’s what it’s for. To vent and ask questions. I’m allowed to express myself.

3.) I honestly don’t know if the bride’s portion is included in the $2800. I

assume, but I’m NOT 100% sure. Last night was the first time they

communicated with us about the trip..

4.) $2,800 includes:. 4 nights' stay at

a villa in St. Maarten. 2x breakfast with a private chef at the villa. Private

dinner at the villa (3-course meal), drinks not included. Private Boat trip to

St. Barths with snacks and drinks. 60 mins In-house massage at your villa.

Round-trip transfers from and to the airport. Ground transportation for all

scheduled activities. NOT including flight, gratuities, travel insurance, drinks.

5.) Since last night, I’ve been debating on whether I should go or not and I

have decided to drop out. I have to admit that I feel guilty since I agreed to

the bach trip. I even wonder if I’m overreacting. None of the bridesmaids

have replied so I’m guessing they feel the same way. I don’t know them so I

won’t ask them. This is someone I have been friends with since 2007, so

she’s practically my sister. But I know I need to stand ten toes down. It’s not

my job to please anyone. I will send a text to the group chat and give y’all

an update later..

Edit 2 08/17/26:

The bride said she understood where I was coming from and was

apologetic. I spoke to one of the MOHs today, and she apologized for not

communicating and for not asking about a budget. She said, “It slipped

their mind.” She agreed that it is expensive, especially since the cost

doesn’t include the flight. She admitted that Luxe Tribes did all of the work (obviously).

I also asked if the bride’s portion was included in the $2,800, and she said

no. The bride is paying her own way. Kind of strange to me since the bride

is usually covered during bach parties/trips.

She said they all want me there, and they’re going to speak with the travel

agent to see if the cost can be lowered. Truthfully, I don’t think it’s

possible. But I did let her know that if it’s not possible, then it’s okay

because I don’t want the bride’s experience to be watered down because

of me. Although it’s very expensive, it’s her right to have the bach trip she wants.

It feels good knowing they didn’t give me any backlash about it. I do think

it’s a lesson learned for everyone, including me. I don’t know how the other

bridesmaids feel because they never replied in the chat. I asked the MOH if

she knew, but she doesn’t know either. Thanks for all the feedback!

There is a particular kind of frustration that comes from being asked to make a major financial commitment after everyone else has already made the decision for you.

OP was not objecting to celebrating her friend or even to traveling to St. Maarten.

She was objecting to being presented with a $2,800 bill for a luxury vacation after explicitly warning the bride that the original $2,700 estimate was already too expensive.

The emotional problem is bigger than the price tag.

Three months earlier, the bride knew OP considered $2,700 a massive expense and apparently intended to see whether the planners could reduce it.

Instead, the bridesmaids heard nothing for months.

Then they were presented with a completed luxury package, a payment portal, a $150 deposit deadline only a week away, and six installments.

By then, there was little opportunity for the group to influence the planning.

OP understandably felt that her financial boundary had been treated as an inconvenience rather than information that should have shaped the plan.

There is another way to view the MOHs’ behavior, though. They may not have intended to manipulate anyone.

They could have been focused on creating the bride’s ideal experience and assumed that anyone who could not afford it would simply decline.

But that assumption is precisely where the problem lies.

A person’s willingness to attend a bachelorette trip cannot reasonably be treated as unlimited financial consent.

Psychotherapist Joyce Marter, LCPC, has written about the uncomfortable relationship between money, guilt, and personal boundaries.

She explains that people often struggle to say no when financial expectations become intertwined with relationships, and recommends deciding what one can comfortably afford rather than allowing guilt or social pressure to determine the answer.

She also notes that saying no to an expense can sometimes protect a relationship by preventing resentment from accumulating.

OP’s guilt came partly from loving the bride. This was not a casual acquaintance; they had been friends since 2007.

That emotional history made saying no feel like rejecting the bride herself.

But declining an expensive trip is not the same thing as declining the friendship.

The eventual update is important because it changes the tone of the story.

The bride apologized, one MOH acknowledged that they should have asked about everyone’s budgets, and they agreed to investigate whether the cost could be reduced.

That response suggests the original planning may have involved poor judgment and communication rather than deliberate malice.

It also demonstrates why OP did not need to sacrifice her financial comfort simply to avoid disappointing someone.

There is a useful distinction between being part of a celebration and underwriting its vision.

The bride is entitled to want private chefs, massages, boat trips, and a luxury villa.

Her friends are entitled to decide whether that experience fits their budgets. Neither preference cancels out the other.

The fairest solution would have been to establish everyone’s comfortable budget before choosing the destination, accommodation, and activities.

Once that conversation was skipped, OP was left choosing between spending thousands she did not want to spend or feeling guilty for opting out.

Her decision to step back was therefore less about being difficult and more about refusing to confuse friendship with financial obligation.

A healthy friendship should survive a sentence as simple as, “I love you, but I can’t afford this trip.”

And perhaps that is the real lesson here: celebrating someone’s milestone should create shared memories, not private debt.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters saw the situation as straightforward

Jodi4869 − Do not go.

beergal621 − “Sorry that’s out of my budget. I won’t be able to make it,

hope all you ladies have fun! ”

CatsMom4Ever − NTA.   Tell them "no". "Sorry ladies, this is completely out

of my budget. I will not be able to go. " Never go into debt for someone

else's event.    Don't let them pull the "but you have time to save" bit. This

is out of your budget.   Period.

emma-butler24 − What's the big deal? Just don't go.

justmekab60 − Doesn't include flights? Insult added to injury. Hell no, don't

go. No need to overexplain or be angry about it. Just say no, tell em to have fun.

These commenters were particularly bothered that OP had already warned the bride months earlier that $2,700 was unaffordable

Ok_Mulberry4331 − Just respond to the group text “Sorry, that’s way out

of the budget I had set for this for myself, I’m sure it’ll be a great trip

though and can’t wait to see pics!

RavenCXXVIV − Easy response. “I appreciate the effort you all put in to

planning this. However, I communicated several months ago that $2700

would be out of my budget and this remains true. I hope you all have a

great time but I will not be joining”. If the bride gets mad at you, she wasn’t

your friend to begin with.

These women are banking on you quietly acquiescing. Don’t do that.

StudiousSeal − This is simple. Just say: “Thanks for getting us the info, I

know I shared with you back on X date that this price would be out of my

budget. Sadly I won’t be able to come with you all. I’m disappointed, of

course, but I absolutely understand why you still chose this.

It looks amazing and sounds like you’re going to have such a good time. I

can’t wait to celebrate with you at the wedding. Please still send me the

hotel info. Since I can’t be there, I’d like to cover a bottle of champagne for

the room. ” Then text the bride individually and offer to take her out for a

mini local celebration afterwards.

Tell her you can’t wait to hear all about it.

These commenters reacted strongly to the overall cost

OkEntertainment4473 − Im so sick of people expecting others to fork over

thousands of dollars for weddings. I just got back from 5 days in Jamaica

for a wedding that cost me $5000. As someone who got sucked into this bs, don't go.

I regretted ever agreeing to it and found myself mostly just annoyed when

I payed an arm and a leg to sweat my ass of in the middle of august in

Jamaica at a resort that wasn't even nice.

brecollier − The way my eyes bugged out of my head when I read that the

$2800 doesn’t even include flights. That’s crazy. Just text the bride

separately that you are so sad you won’t be able to go since they planned

something outside your budget. Hopefully she will be understanding and

shes the only one that matters.

Emotional_Fuel6743 − Do not go. Period. This is absolute insanity I didn’t

even spend $2800 on my entire wedding

WonderorBust − That was the cost of my 10 day honeymoon in Fiji… She’s

the wrong person to be planning this.

What should have been a fun celebration became a financial shock when the bridesmaids were handed a $2,800 luxury package with barely a week to commit.

OP had already voiced her budget concerns months earlier, yet the planners never asked for anyone’s limits and outsourced the entire trip without consultation.

Her decision to step back was understandable, especially once she learned flights and gratuities were still excluded.

Do you think the MOHs simply made a planning mistake, or was the lack of communication unfair?

Would you stay in or bow out? Share your take below.
