Woman Asks Boyfriend to Stop Calling Her Names, He Says He’s Trying to Desensitize Her

Humor can bring couples closer together, but what happens when one partner’s jokes consistently make the other feel uncomfortable or disrespected?

Everyone has different boundaries when it comes to teasing, sensitive subjects, and playful insults. While one person might dismiss certain comments as harmless fun, the other may experience them as hurtful, especially after repeatedly asking for them to stop. When those concerns are ignored, the disagreement can become about much more than having different senses of humor.

One 25-year-old Redditor recently shared her growing frustration with her boyfriend of seven years. Throughout their relationship, he had frequently made inappropriate jokes and called her insulting names, despite her efforts to establish boundaries. After another uncomfortable joke sparked an argument, he offered an explanation that left her questioning his intentions.

Rather than reassuring her, his reasoning raised concerns about how he viewed her feelings. Keep reading to discover why the conversation made her reconsider their relationship.

A woman questions her relationship after her boyfriend says his hurtful jokes are meant to desensitize her

'My partner want to “desensitize me”'

I’m 25, been with my partner 26M since I was 18. He has always made inappropriate “jokes”, jokey name calling,

“edgy” jokes blah blah blah I thought it was because he was young and we just had different senses of humor.

Well I started getting upset with him calling me names “jokingly” like $lut or b!tch.

I have been trying to set boundaries about him not calling me those things even as jokes

because I feel like he will say it in a “joke” or in our dogs voice just to be able to call me that.

We got in an argument last night because he made a joke about how someone remoted into his computer and found all his p**n.

I have made it clear since the beginning of our relationship that I don’t care what he does in his free time as far as watching that content goes,

I would just prefer to be ignorant about it and don’t find jokes about him watching p**n, referencing p**n stars,

or talking about having other “b!ches” funny and it makes my brain go into overdrive because I have an anxiety disorder and I’m insecure.

I said “that’s not funny” and he said “I’m sorry I just am trying to desensitize you that’s why I say those jokes” so I immediately said “I don’t like...

those jokes will always be a problem for me and they’re not funny so I don’t see why it’s such a problem for you to not say them

if you care so much about me”.

He kept trying to justify it and spin it as a good thing but couldn’t think of anything that wouldn’t make him sound manipulative.

He finally settled on “I’m dumb and I say dumb things idk but it’s not supposed to be a bad thing because they’re not intended to be mean towards you”.

He doesn’t say jokes like this around ANY of his friends so I don’t understand why he NEEDS to say them to me.

And why he’s trying to manipulate me into changing my mind so he can say them instead of just NOT SAYING THEM.

I think he is verbally abusing me with these “jokes” but I literally can’t tell. He always says sappy things after we argue like

“you’re my entire world and I just need you” but last night when he said them I felt like he was being manipulative instead of meaning them.

He wants to get married but I don’t feel like he even likes me,

just likes that I take care of absolutely everything, that I make all of his decisions, and that I make a lot of money.

Sometimes, the most troubling part of a relationship disagreement isn’t the original comment. It’s discovering that someone understands a boundary, knows their partner feels hurt, and continues crossing it anyway.

For one 25-year-old woman, that realization has become increasingly difficult after seven years with her boyfriend.

Since they began dating when she was 18, he has regularly made edgy jokes and used insulting names toward her, sometimes disguising those comments as playful teasing or speaking through their dog’s imagined voice.

Initially, she attributed the behavior to immaturity and differences in humor.

But as the years passed, the jokes continued, even after she repeatedly explained that being called degrading names made her uncomfortable.

The conflict escalated when her boyfriend joked about someone remotely accessing his computer and discovering pornography.

The woman had previously made her position clear: she wasn’t trying to control his private viewing habits, but she didn’t want to hear jokes about pornography, other women, or sexual comparisons.

When she told him the latest joke wasn’t funny, he offered an unexpected explanation.

He claimed he was deliberately making these comments to desensitize her.

Rather than apologizing for repeatedly upsetting her, he framed his behavior as something intended to help her become less sensitive.

That explanation understandably disturbed her.

She began questioning whether the jokes were actually verbal mistreatment and whether his affectionate declarations after arguments were sincere.

Her doubts extended beyond the humor itself. She described feeling responsible for most decisions and practical responsibilities in the relationship, while also contributing significantly financially.

The central problem wasn’t whether the boyfriend had an unconventional sense of humor. It was whether his desire to make certain jokes should outweigh his partner’s repeatedly expressed discomfort.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline identifies repeated insults, humiliation, manipulation, and dismissing someone’s feelings as warning signs of emotional abuse. It also explains that people experiencing these patterns may begin questioning whether they’re overreacting, particularly when a partner minimizes hurtful behavior as humor.

The boyfriend’s explanation about desensitization is particularly concerning. Genuine therapeutic approaches to anxiety are structured around the person’s needs; repeatedly making unwanted sexual jokes or calling a partner degrading names isn’t an appropriate substitute for treatment.

It’s possible he genuinely considers these remarks harmless. But good intentions don’t eliminate the responsibility to change behavior that repeatedly hurts someone.

The woman could benefit from discussing these experiences with a trusted friend or individual counselor, especially before making decisions about marriage. She can also examine whether her partner respects boundaries through consistent actions rather than affectionate promises after arguments.

The fact that he reportedly avoids these jokes around friends suggests he can adjust his behavior depending on the audience.

Ultimately, a healthy relationship shouldn’t require someone to become comfortable with repeated disrespect just to preserve their partner’s preferred sense of humor.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors said his behavior showed deep disrespect and urged OP to leave

hey-look-its-reddit − Don't 👏date👏men👏who👏don't👏respect👏women👏 (*this man does not respect women)

Shadowpriest − Fuuuuuuck no. You aren't his property. You aren't his chattel. He's got no right, no permission, no authority to make you accept that.

Throw him right out of your life.

BubbleCrum − Believe people when they show you who they are. He has shown you this entire time that he doesn't respect you.

Be strong, shine up your spine, and act accordingly. I do not recommend marrying a man that makes you feel abused.

PluralMimsy − He's trash, doesn't respect you (or women in general), and isnt going to get better.   Well?

These users saw the “jokes” as deliberate verbal abuse meant to normalize mistreatment

slamminsalmoncannon − He’s trying to desensitize you to his verbal abuse so you’re too broken and numb to it to push back.

He may love you, but he doesn’t love you well or the way you deserve.

There are plenty of potential partners who would never dream of calling you a s__t or a b__ch. And let’s be real - it’s never been a joke.

Edit: I’m so pleased to come back to this and see that it really resonated.

Especially the part about ‘he may love you, but he doesn’t love you well…’

I’ve been in abusive relationships and have definitely heard ‘he doesn’t love you’ from people who were trying to help me. But it does the opposite.

These abusers do often love their victims.

In a twisted, toxic, possessive, and broken way. And telling a victim ‘he doesn’t love you’ can actually help the abuser dig their claws in deeper.

So instead of denying that love exists in these destructive relationships, offer an alternative.

Affirm that they are deserving of love and kindness both. That it’s not only ok to prioritize your safety and mental health, it’s essential.

You don’t have to stop loving your abuser but you do need to get away from him.

Any_Breakfast_8450 − A man who is trying to effectively train you to be okay with being verbally abused is every red flag.

His weaponized incompetence responses (“I’m dumb”) to your reasonable requests are not excuses.

Please get out and find someone who loves and respects you. 🙏🤍🫂

USAF_Retired2017 − If he says horrible things to you and says he’s “joking” and “desensitizing you”,

then he’s verbally abusing you and trying to desensitize you to it so you don’t leave. Girl. This behavior is disgusting.

Should a partner’s claim that something was only a joke matter once they’ve been told repeatedly that it hurts? And can trust recover when someone admits they’re deliberately trying to make their partner tolerate unwanted behavior?
