The actress has starred in some great films and series over the years, but 2019 was undoubtedly her year. Following the success of Euphoria season 2, many are only now discovering her other great roles.
In this article, we’ll take a look at 5 of her best performances – starting with Euphoria itself.
1. Euphoria
Euphoria is a HBO original series that premiered in 2019. The show follows a group of high school students as they navigate love, sex, and drugs. Maude Apatow stars as Lexi Howard, the nerdy younger sister of main character Cassie McKee. In the second season, Lexi transitions from Cassie’s sidekick to the director of the sensational play “Our Life.” The show-stopping finale gathers the students of East Highland High School to watch “Our Life” which is about them.
Though Lexi is new to the spotlight, Apatow is not, and following the cessation of Euphoria season 2 many are only recently discovering this. Daughter of actress Leslie Mann and director Judd Apatow, Maude Apatow comes from Hollywood royalty and began her career playing her mother’s daughter in her father’s movies. Since then, she has taken on many roles and proven herself to be one to watch. From This is 40 to The King of Staten Island, here are her five best movies and series.
2. Knocked Up
Knocked Up is a 2007 American romantic comedy film written, directed, and produced by Judd Apatow. The film stars Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl as an unmarried couple whose one-night stand unexpectedly leads to pregnancy. Maude plays the daughter of Katherine Heigl‘s character, Alison Scott. It was released on June 1, 2007 to box office success, grossing $219 million worldwide, and received positive reviews from critics.
3. Girls (2012)
Created by Lena Dunham and executive produced by Judd Apatow, HBO’s Girls is a comedy-drama series about four 20 somethings living in New York City. These young women are wannabe writer Hannah Horvath (Lena), free spirit Jessa Johansson(Jemima Kirke), Type A Marnie Michaels & bubbly Shoshanna Shapiro . During its five year run many celebrities made cameos on girls including Maude appatow who played 15year old student Cleo.
Apatow made her small-screen debut in the fourth season of Girls where she played 15-year-old student Cleo. Working as a substitute English teacher at this point, Hannah befriends Cleo and the two enter a short-lived, inappropriate relationship. Hannah confides in Cleo about her relationship with fellow teacher Fran (Jake Lacy), gives Cleo her own(bad) dating advice, and even convinces her to get matching frenulum piercings. Again, this is another duo that just works; Dunham and Apatow bounce off each other in their scenes together and between them have some of the best lines in the season.
4. Other People (2016)
When 30-something year old David (Jesse Plemons) moves back home to care for his mother Joanne who is dying of cancer, he expects an awkward relationship. What he gets instead are memories that fill up the empty spaces in their childhoods–and maybe just enough time with her before she dies?
Molly Shannon gives one helluva performance as grieving parentage; Bradley Whitford also shines despite being cast against type here as dad figure Jack. Alexandra is like any other teenage girl, except her struggles are worsened by her mother’s illness. Apatow portrays this well, allowing audiences to see past Alexandra’s tough exterior. Molly Shannon steals the show, however, as mother Joanne. Known for her strictly-comedic work on Saturday Night Live, Shannon’s deeply moving performance in Other People is a welcome surprise.
5. Hollywood (2020)
Hollywood is a Netflix miniseries that follows the lives of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-war Hollywood. The show features an ensemble cast, including American Horror Story regular Dylan McDermott as well Glee star Darren Criss!
Hollywood has long been the land of dreams where anything can happen. Take, for instance Apatow’s recurring character Henrietta Castello who is married to David Corenswet’s Jack and struggles with being an actress while she awaits his success on stage or screen (which never comes). The relationship between these two leads provides interesting drama in what would otherwise just be another scandalous show; it received 12 Primetime Emmy nominations plus 2 wins!
