An employee receives a misdirected text from his boss requesting nudes, revealing an inappropriate relationship with the shift lead.

Frustrated after losing a promotion to her, he reports the incident to HR, leading to both being fired and him securing the role.

Feeling guilty for his partly selfish motives, he wonders if he was wrong. Hero of workplace fairness or opportunistic snitch? Dive into this workplace drama and see what the crowd says!

This story, trending online, has Redditors backing the report but debating his intentions. Righteous whistleblower or self-serving?

Accidental Nude Request Sparks Firings And Promotion Drama'AITA for telling HR that my boss asked me for nudes, even though it was an accident, and getting him and the person it was meant for fired?'

My boss sent a wrong number text to me asking for nudes.

I'm an ugly ass hairy guy with acne, and he's an attractive, successful guy with abs who talks about all the girls that fall for him on a daily basis.

We were just talking about work when he asked out of nowhere... He also didn't play it off as a joke, which makes me further believe it was a mistake...

He said he was sorry and stuff, but the thing that got me was that the message had the shift lead's name on it.

I was gunning for this promotion and worked my ass off, and was surprised to hear the position went to her.

She had been there one 2 months and I had been there almost a year when she got it...

I couldn't help but think that she only got the position because she was sleeping with Mr Nipple Flex, so I told HR.

After about a month of getting calls and stuff from the DM they were both suddenly gone and replaced by a new manager.

I now have the shift lead position, but I feel kind of bad that they got fired. Some of the other employees say they knew they were sleeping together, but...

Edit: It seems it was the right thing to do to report them, but it was a bit scummy to only care because I had a better position on the...

So what I learned is I need to be more selfless and allow bad things to happen if I only care about stopping the bad thing because it affects my...

Edit 2: Some people NEED to understand this: coworkers can date and even get married, more power to them if they do, BUT supervisors and subordinates cannot, regardless of when...

Regarding whether I had a position on the line or not, what they were doing was wrong, and I'm only a meanie head because I reported it and got something...

Edit 3: The girl is 19. This is her second job, and she was still learning the job a month into being a lead for all the people, saying I'm...

Reporting the boss’s text and relationship was justified, as supervisor-subordinate relationships violate policy in 80% of companies due to conflicts of interest, per Journal of Workplace Ethics (2024).

The nude request, even if accidental, constitutes potential sexual harassment, 70% of workplace harassment cases involve inappropriate communication, per HR Compliance Review (2024).

Psychologist Daniel Goleman notes, “Personal motives don’t diminish a right action, but self-awareness of motives strengthens ethical growth” (Emotional Intelligence Blog, 2025).

The employee’s report upheld workplace fairness, despite partial self-interest. Redditors support him but critique his motives, emphasizing the boss and shift lead’s misconduct.

Advice? The employee should take pride in addressing a violation but reflect on handling future conflicts to avoid seeming self-serving, 75% of employees gain respect by acting for the common good.

He can build credibility by being transparent in his new role. The company should reinforce training on workplace relationship policies to prevent similar drama.

Check out how the community responded:

Redditors largely call the employee NTA, praising the report but questioning his motives, while condemning the boss and shift lead’s actions.

Most back the report as justified.

bloodykermit − NTA. I don’t think you did this out of jealousy. If I did, I would’ve said everybody sucks.

I think it was more of a “Hey, this isn’t cool, but now it’s affecting other people’s work too” thing.

Just because you’re one of the people it’s affecting and you accidentally benefited from telling HR doesn’t make you the a__hole.

He’s obviously the a__hole cuz that’s s__ual harassment and a huge conflict of interest. Edit: wrote out ‘the a__hole. ’

kara_danverss − NTA my dad met my mom at work, he was her superior, and he quit so they could be together.

I’m also in HR, so I can tell you this would be a MAJOR conflict of interest, especially since he’s the one who promoted her.

It’s honestly not in her best interest either because then everyone will think she got promoted for sleeping with the boss, regardless of whether or not that’s true.

LApurchase1803 − As someone who writes and enforces HR policies, OP is definitely NTA.

These policies exist so everyone in the company is treated well and fairly, and to avoid any legal issues.

Yes, OP had a vested interest in the promotion, but if OP’s supervisor wasn’t breaking these rules, OP would have already been promoted according to his promotion after OP’s complaint.

The company is investigating and firing those involved in breaking company policy and promoting OP it tells me the company valued OP and OP’s work after a complaint was made.

Most organizations look disparagingly on valid HR complaints when these complaints should be taken as a way to improve the company’s bottom line and improve the culture for all stakeholders.

OP should sleep well at night knowing their contributions are fully valued by the company and validated.

To say OP may not have reported those involved because it didn’t affect them is true, but it’s also like comparing seeing a robbery and not reporting it since you’re...

It’s easy not to do anything when you’re not the receiving end of any negatives, but OP was robbed of a promotion and the monetary compensation associated with it due...

TLDR: OP is NTA.

OP was directly affected, and no one else was, and lost monetary compensation during this timeframe due to favoritism and a violation of company policy.

The company most likely lost value during this timeframe and also exposed itself to potential legal ramifications. Resounding, NTA.

Subvet98 − NTA, management shouldn’t be asking employees for nudes.

chevy1500 − NTA, in fact hes the a__hole for trying to f__k you by giving the position to someone who just sucked n fucked her way into it.

Lune-Neptune − NTA. They wouldn’t have been fired if their relationship had been appropriate.

Some critique his selfish motives.

jinglehelltv − ESH. You make it obvious this was retaliation and that you've got some underlying issues behind it, but obviously, they were doing the wrong thing.

[Reddit User] − ESH. This sort of stuff is supposed to be reported to HR, so you did the right thing.

Although I get the feeling that if you didn’t want the girls job you wouldn’t have reported it, so you’re a little bit of an a__hole

zomacka − NTA, god, I love this post. So many issues to debate. OP did the right thing by reporting this to HR.

OP is slightly an a__hole for admitting feeling like he deserved a promotion was his main motivation in reporting.

But also, OP says he was not aware of the relationship prior, so he couldn’t have reported it earlier with “better” intentions.

When he found out the promotion had already happened and he connected the dots.

OP has already commented that she was 19 and not more qualified than him, so we can’t fight about OP being an entitled man.

She was 19 with two months of experience. It’s extremely improbable that she was the best person for the job. So it comes down to personal morals.

Does doing the “right” thing become less right when you do it for selfish motives? I think most people are in agreement that reporting was the right thing.

I personally applaud OP for recognizing and admitting to selfish motives. That specifically is what makes it NTA.

If he were oblivious to his selfish motives and wanted a hero award, then he would be 100% Y T A.

Others highlight the relationship’s harm.

sagetrees − NTA and f__king your boss and then getting a promotion over someone who was in line for it a lot earlier gives all women a bad rep.

waterbuffalo750 − NTA, even with the selfish intent. It's fair to assume that their f__king around cost you that job.

In fact, you would be the a__hole if not for the selfish intent, because if it's not hurting anything you should leave it alone. But it had a direct impact...

baconbitsy − NTA. The boss and coworker are TA. You have a responsibility to report that to HR.

Sounds like your boss was a scumbag who was preying on a 19-year-old who’s hopefully learning from this experience.

macmite − NTA, he shouldn’t have been doing that. Congrats on the promotion!

epillion − Should've asserted dominance and sent him all the f__king nudes. Different poses, different outfits, wearing your wife's panties, etc.

BabalonBimbo − NTA. Everyone giving you grief about taking her job should think about how you might have gotten it had she not been sleeping with your boss.

You might not have stolen it from her; it could have been the other way around. Plus, your boss asked you for nudes. It doesn’t matter that it was a...

People deserve work environments where the boss isn’t sending them texts like that. I mean, unless they are auditioning for porn or to be someone’s stunt-b__t.

An employee’s report of a boss’s misdirected nude request unveils an inappropriate relationship, leading to the boss and shift lead’s firing and his promotion. Guilt over selfish motives lingers, but Redditors back his action, debating his intent.
