Bride-To-Be Says Her Fiancé’s Constant Slipups Are Draining Her Trust Before The Wedding

in Social Issues

Everyone makes mistakes, and a little clumsiness can even seem endearing at the beginning of a relationship. But when everyday tasks repeatedly go wrong, the person dealing with the consequences may eventually stop finding them amusing. It’s not necessarily about one spilled drink or forgotten responsibility. Sometimes, the bigger concern is whether you can depend on your partner without constantly checking what they’re doing.

One Redditor is struggling with exactly that as she prepares to marry her fiancé. What she once considered his charmingly scattered personality has become a source of growing frustration. From household responsibilities to wedding preparations, she says even simple activities often require her intervention or end up costing additional money.

After one particularly exhausting day filled with mishaps, the original poster (OP) began questioning whether this pattern could affect their marriage. Keep reading to discover why she’s considering couples counseling before the wedding.

A bride-to-be questions her future marriage as her fiancé’s constant mistakes erode trust

'My fiance frequently "messes up" but it's not cute and funny anymore'

I suggested couples counseling but I worry this is just something I have to learn to accept, or accept it could be a deal breaker.

Below is how our day went today. But it's like this all the time, with so many tasks. I thought it was cute and funny at first.

Oh, he's so frazzled, he just needs a little help! But now it's gotten to the point where I feel like it's affecting trust.

I feel like I cannot trust him or comfortably offload tasks to him. I think that's a crucial disconnect in a relationship and I'm stressed...

Today, we're getting home from work where we got $400 from coworkers for a wedding gift (important for next paragraph).

I had our lunches with me in a plastic bag.

He offers to carry it, so I hand it to him. He doesn't grab it by the loops or in a secure way - he just grabs the part closest...

which is a single strap of the plastic bag. I know if I let go, it'll fall, and he has cloth seats so I really don't wanna clean that up.

I hold on and ask him to grab both straps. He does so. This happens EVERY TIME he grabs a plastic bag. It's become routine.

I can't stand it. I go to ask him why and he interrupted me and said "I know I know I grabbed it wrong I realized."

No... You didn't realize... I had to tell you to grab it right.

I tell myself, it's small. It's just a bag. Move on. He gets out of the car. He starts mumbling to himself. I close my door but it doesn't close...

I realize it's locked. I say hey, unlock the door, I didn't close it hard enough. He says one second. He's saying things I can't hear. I say what?.

No response. I slam my door with my hip and say "it's all good I closed the door". He says "I locked the keys in the car what do I...

You seriously couldn't have told me that when I had the door partially open!?!? He had to pay $375 for a locksmith.

There goes the wedding money from coworkers.

We finally get inside. But our dog is out of his crate and has eaten the half eaten breakfast my fiance left out on the table.

For context, he does the AM dog chores and I do the PM ones.

I don't blame my fiance for leaving the crate door open, we have started taking our dog to day care in the AM so he may have just fallen out...

But the food on the table and the combination of it all was frustrating.

I walk the dog to decompress. I come back, feed him (and us) dinner, and the dog starts having some acid reflux.

I ask my fiance to give the dog his meds. He opens the container and spills all the pills onto the floor.

Then realizes the floor is wet from ice cubes that fell out of the freezer.

So the pills are a total loss and we'll have to get a refill. It's only $20 but it's still frustrating. Again compounded with everything else.

We start working on a wedding DIY. He wants to print out our wedding crossword on this nice paper he bought

(with his new cricut machine, he's a crafting fan).

He prints all 32 copies in one go. But the printer settings were wrong, so they're all misaligned and blurry.

Well he ruined so much paper that he doesn't have enough left to re do it, and has to get regular cardstock from staples. More wasted money.

I just don't know what to do. I've never had someone mess up this much. I never thought it would matter. What do I do?. Edit: we're not having kids...

There is a difference between having an occasional bad day and feeling like you have quietly become responsible for another adult’s mistakes. At first, a partner’s absent-minded moments can seem endearing. Over time, however, repeated preventable problems can create something much heavier than annoyance: the feeling that you cannot safely rely on the person beside you.

That appears to be the OP’s real frustration. None of the individual incidents is enormous. A plastic bag is handled carelessly, a car gets locked with the keys inside, food is left where the dog can reach it, medication is dropped, and wedding materials are printed incorrectly.

Yet the incidents happened within a single day and repeatedly required the OP to anticipate problems, correct them, absorb the consequences, or help repair the damage. The $375 locksmith bill makes the pattern especially painful because money intended for their wedding disappeared because of one avoidable mistake.

A useful psychological distinction is between making mistakes and being unreliable. Everyone makes mistakes. Reliability is about what happens afterward: Does the person learn from recurring errors? Do they create systems to prevent them?

Do they take responsibility without expecting their partner to supervise them? If the answer is consistently no, the emotional burden can shift from partnership toward something resembling management.

Relationship researcher John Gottman has emphasized the importance of trust as a central component of healthy relationships. His work describes trust not simply as believing that a partner loves you, but as experiencing that person as someone who has your interests in mind and can be depended upon when life becomes difficult.

That distinction matters here. The OP does not seem furious because her fiancé occasionally drops something. She is frightened by the possibility that delegating responsibility to him means she must remain mentally involved anyway. If she cannot hand over a task without checking whether it was done correctly, then the task has not truly been shared.

Psychologist and relationship researcher Dr. Sue Johnson similarly emphasized that secure relationships depend on partners experiencing one another as accessible, responsive, and dependable. Her work on Emotionally Focused Therapy describes emotional security as partly arising from knowing that a partner will respond when support is needed.

That provides a different way to interpret the OP’s stress. She may not be demanding perfection. She may be asking for confidence that when her fiancé says, “I’ve got it,” she can genuinely stop thinking about it.

The fact that he sometimes recognizes the mistake only after she points it out is also important. An apology after every accident is not necessarily enough if the same accident keeps happening.

Accountability includes adaptation. For example, if the plastic-bag problem happens every time, he can deliberately grab both handles. If he frequently forgets things, he can use reminders. If he damages materials by rushing, he can test one page before printing 32 copies. These are ordinary compensatory strategies, not unreasonable demands for perfection.

Couples counseling could therefore be useful, but not because the OP needs to learn how to tolerate everything. The goal should be discovering whether they can create a sustainable division of responsibility in which both adults carry the mental load and learn from recurring problems.

The OP also deserves to consider something uncomfortable: if nothing changed, could she happily live this way for another ten years?

That question may reveal more than any individual mistake.

A partner does not need to be flawless. But when “I messed up again” becomes a permanent relationship role, love can slowly be replaced by supervision. And once trust begins to depend on constant checking, the problem is no longer the spilled pills or the printer. It is whether two adults can genuinely rely on each other.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors urged OP to postpone marriage until the pattern is understood and improved

Grouchy_Evidence2558 − Do not get married. If you are already resenting him and these antics, getting married will not help.

And having kids will drive you over the edge. Postpone the wedding. Get him evaluated for ADHD. If he has it, get him medicated.

Get him some executive function coaching. And 100% yes to couples counseling. Do not just “accept” this.

psj3809 − Don't rush the wedding. Have more time to think. He can't have just been like this recently though ? Surely this is constant ?

Counselling won't cure this though, he just seems to be stupid or something.

Just constantly one thing after another You want a lifetime of this ? Why rush to get married ?

rpom915 − It’s either ADHD, which is treatable with meds and coaching or It’s a misalignment of expectations and poor communication,

which is treatable with couples counseling or He’s just an i__ot. The first two are fixable if you’re both all in.

The third one isn’t. Don’t marry until you have more clarity.

Lulu_42 − What was his life like before you were a part of it? What would it look like if you just stopped for awhile?

I think this needs an intense conversation with him. Explain to him that he’s offloading too much mental worry to you and how frustrated you are.

Maybe, depending on that conversation, you two can try out having the consequences fall only onto him:

make sure money like from his mistakes only comes out of his accounts, pack your lunch separately, don’t help him clean up his mistakes.

And see if it gets better. If neither consequences nor talking help, maybe this wedding should be put on hold.

These users warned from experience that chronic incompetence can become exhausting and worse after marriage or kids

CherryDietCokeSlut − Hi, my soon-to-be-ex-husband was like this.

There was a circumstance where he was gone for 7ish months and my life was so incredibly peaceful and so much easier it kind of inspired

a crisis because we’d been together for 5ish years and I’d forgotten what competency was like. It does not get better with these types of people.

I thought it would, and the arguments devolved from just about the specific thing of the day to pleas to just… learn? From anything?

Never did. See lots of comments blaming possible ADHD, that was a factor in our issues but he never would get treatment,

which was also an argument between us frequently.

Just save yourself the trouble and don’t get married until there’s a solid history of improvement or else I promise you’ll end up like me.

Dull-Confection5788 − Well, I have two kids with someone like this. I honestly didnt know he was this incompetent because I did everything

(was raised to accept my forced role as caretaker). So whe. I needed help after kid 2- I found out.

We have two kids. But it’s honestly like I am a single mom with two preteens and a teen that is just there.

It’s more work to ask him for help and show him how to do things because something else falls off. I have to be on top of everything.

When he continuously forgets I hear “your expectations are too high, everybody makes mistakes. His COUNSELOR told him to tell me this.

The guy couldn’t give our kid a water bottle for daycare- his ONLY RESPONSIBILITY when it came to kids.

The daycare would call and scold ME. Example: he insisted he feed cats and dog in am as contribution to hectic mornings

(hectic for me, he has barely any am duties) because we went to counseling and counselor called out his lack of contribution.

He will not give our cats and dogs water. Nope. Never. If I don’t do it myself daily it will not get done. He has screamed at me that he...

But that’s not ok. Do it right. Not half assed. My husband sees attempting effort as success, regardless of outcome.

He was raised this way. Weaponized incompetence.

Don’t have kids with this “forever a kid” fool. Edit: I typed fast and it was messy.

But seriously, do NOT marry him if you don’t want to be his mother. You’re already being prepped for it. Don’t be me. Choose yourself.

Gtfo Edit 2: H THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I FACE NOW BRCAUSE I MARRIED AN INCONPETENT MAN

IS PARENTING MY CHILDREN TO KNOW THEIR FATHERS BEHAVIOR ISNT TYPICAL OR ACCEPTABLE-

yet here he is DOING THE THINGS I HAVE TO TIRN AROUND AND SAY “it’s not ok to react as your father did”

I can’t leave him because I have no money no support.

Plus I could never split custody because I fear for their safety under his care. Does that sound like a life you want to live?

Knowing your kids are learning that this is what a father/husband is?

The harm that it’s done my kids marrying someone incompetent and lacking any paternal instinct is hell

JTCinthehouse − My boyfriend is like this and also has other things he does as well. He has ADHD.

There was a time he was getting into car accidents all the time too and many other “quirks”.

Having to be on top of things all the time has made me into an on-edge person and angry all the time especially

because it has affected the progress I have been able to make in my own life in several important areas.

We also have two dogs and it is extremely difficult to agree on decisions.

His inattention even got our first dog’s arm broken at 4 months( another dog bit it).

You become angry and on high alert and people in public or who don’t know you think you are a mean b__ch.

People who know you don’t want to be around when the boyfriend is around. I have lost friends and become more isolated.

I’m tired a lot and only have time for certain things. It has real life affects. He has a lot of good qualities that neurotypical people don’t.

I truly know people like this aren’t trying to be mean or do it on purpose but for the people around them that it affects,

it’s really hard and I’ve been depressed a long time.

Mostly because of the lack of progress in my own life. I feel for people with ADHD and all those who struggle,

but I also feel for those who care for those that do. I don’t like who I have become and I have never been like this before.

I have tried to end the relationship but it hasn’t happened.

I don’t love myself anymore and I’m constantly anxious.

LingonberryNormal374 − Please leave now. I did not. I always think back to how I almost canceled the wedding

when he didn't get me his addresses for the invitations despite me asking repeatedly.

He missed the printing deadline so all my family invites were printed and he scribbled his on with a pen.

These things seem silly until you are dealing with them every day year after year. I wish I had called it off then.

This user bluntly said persistent incompetence is a major turnoff and may not be fixable

kaylesmac88 − I sound mean but you cant fix incompetence. Its a huge turn off. Some people are just idiots and that's that

This commenter pushed back on blaming ADHD and stressed personal accountability instead

SnekoLovesCakez − Why y'all gotta start blaming us with ADHD 😭 even I ain't this careless. ......

it's still a man problem! If he has ADHD he should have totally learned SOME coping mechanisms

however it seems all he's ever done is rely on the women in his life to get it right which STILL makes it a him problem.

He shouldn't be using joint money like wedding money gifts and should be taking better accountability of his actions.

So, is this a fixable problem with the right help, or a preview of married life she should take very seriously? Share your hot takes below!
