Cillian Murphy’s Audition Tape for Batman Made Public
Cillian Murphy, then 29, was slightly younger than Christian Bale, 32, when Batman Begins premiered in 2005. While Murphy appeared even younger in hindsight, speculation arose about his potential suitability for the role had he bulked up like Bale.
Ultimately, Christian Bale delivered a stellar performance as both Bruce Wayne and Batman, contributing to the trilogy’s enduring acclaim in the genre.
Recently, Cillian Murphy’s audition tape for Batman surfaced, years after the trilogy concluded.
Despite trying on Val Kilmer‘s Batsuit and screen-testing as Bruce Wayne, it was evident to all involved – including Murphy, Nolan, and the audience – that he wasn’t the right fit for Batman.
Christopher Nolan discussed their initial meeting and mutual recognition that Murphy wasn’t suited for the role in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“When we had our first conversation, I think both of us knew that you weren’t going to wind up playing Batman. But I really wanted to get on set with you, I wanted to get you on film.”
He added: “We did those screen tests very elaborately, on 35mm, with a little set. There was just an electric atmosphere in the crew when you started to perform.”
Nolan also mentioned that he had Murphy do a screen test with the intention of casting him as Scarecrow.
“We did two scenes — there was a Bruce Wayne scene and a Batman scene — and I made sure that executives came down and watched what you were doing on set. Everybody was so excited by watching you perform that when I then said to them, ‘Okay, Christian Bale is Batman, but what about Cillian to play Scarecrow?’ there was no dissent.”
He added: “All the previous Batman villains had been played by huge movie stars: Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, that kind of thing. That was a big leap for them, and it really was purely on the basis of that test. So that’s how you got to play Scarecrow.”
