Dad Ignored Exam Etiquette And Cheated Aloud, Teacher Had To Respect It

Some lessons in life come with a syllabus, a manual, and a clearly defined punishment for mistakes. But some lessons? They come with laughter, disbelief, and one bold dad who refused to play by the rules.

During an adult education course decades ago, a Redditor’s father found himself in a multiple-choice exam with an unusual rule: students were allowed one free pass to cheat.

Sound reasonable? Not quite. This was the kind of situation where you either obey the rule or write your own history and Dad chose the latter, hilariously.

A dad in a qualification exam uses the teacher’s “one free cheat” strike by loudly asking the room for an answer and gets it

'How to use a strict teacher's two-strike rule to ace a test?'

This didn't happen to me, but to my dad, and it's one of my favourite stories he tells.

Some years ago (by which I mean two or so decades, roughly), my dad was at a several-day course to earn some additional qualifications for his job.

On the final day, there was going to be a multiple choice test to actually pass the seminar.

On test day, everyone got settled into place, and the teacher announced that he would not go easy on cheaters:

You had one strike to be caught trying to copy off of someone else or use a cheat sheet,

but if you were caught a second time, you would be immediately thrown out and your score made invalid.

Now, this teacher was very old-school strict, and treated grown working people like unruly schoolchildren, and my dad does not like that very much.

So my dad proceeds to take the test, and it goes pretty well!

When he's through with the questions, there is just one left where he's not sure he's got it right. And he has a free strike, after all.

So my dad... yells out into the class. Just calls out, "what's the answer to question 14?".

Some complete bro elsewhere in the room yells the answer back.

My dad fills in the sheet, gets up, walks to the teacher's desk,

presumably tries not to trip on the teacher's jaw as it lies on the floor, hands in his test, and leaves the room.

To the teacher's credit, he approached my dad afterwards with some... begrudging respect.

I don't know if he changed his policy afterwards, or the tone in which he conveyed it.

EDIT: Holy crap this blew up!! I'm glad my dad's shenanigans brought a smile to so many people <3

And thank you for the silver, even though I had to google what that means!

This story is a classic example of pushing the boundaries of rigid rules with clever, harmless defiance. What makes it entertaining and psychologically interesting is how your dad applied a very literal reading of the teacher’s “one free strike” rule to his advantage.

According to educational psychologists, adult learners often respond better when rules are applied consistently, but they also appreciate a demonstration of ingenuity that challenges overly rigid systems.

Dr. Robert J. Sternberg, a cognitive psychologist who studies creative problem-solving, notes that adults under structured testing conditions can experience both stress and a need for cognitive autonomy.

OP’s dad’s action, yelling out for the answer, showcases not just boldness but strategic thinking, understanding exactly what was permissible under the stated policy. It’s a harmless example of “malicious compliance” where the spirit of the rule was technically upheld, even if the intent was subverted (Sternberg, Psychology Today).

From an ethical standpoint, while it might be considered “cheating,” the situation is unique: the teacher created a loophole with the one-strike rule.

Dr. Sternberg explains that adults sometimes test boundaries to understand the flexibility of systems, and that such acts can highlight inconsistencies in rules.

In this sense, OP’s dad’s behavior may have prompted the instructor to reconsider either the wording or enforcement of the policy, fostering a more coherent system for future students.

For those in similar situations, the takeaway is twofold: first, always read rules carefully, as there can be ambiguities or loopholes; second, exercising ingenuity can be effective, but it should not compromise others’ fairness or safety.

This story is entertaining because it’s clever without being harmful, and it reminds us that sometimes, adults benefit from a playful test of boundaries, provided it’s done responsibly.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters loved the cheeky logic and perfect “letter of the rule” compliance

workerbee_s − Seriously weird rule. You get a free pass on cheating once??

I'm totally floored by the idea that adults need a Don't cheat TWICE rule. Textbook MC, though :D

Hamblerger − Perfect to the letter compliance.

nPhlames − Imagine someone asking what answer 1 is and uses up their pass, then someone else asks what 2 is and uses their pass.

Then the process repeats for the entire test lmao

This group questioned the teacher’s bizarre “one free cheat” policy

ILikeMint − To be honest though the opposite of this "two strikes and you're out" rule is a no tolerance policy

[Reddit User] − What kind of teacher would tell you that you can cheat on a test once with 0 repercussions?

[Reddit User] − On test day, everyone got settled into place, and the teacher announced that he would not go easy on cheaters

Ok... Really going to be hard on cheaters

You had one strike to be caught trying to copy off of someone else or use a cheat sheet Proceeds to go easy on cheaters.

Seriously this sounds made-up, I've never met a teacher/prof/assessor/proctor who gave me one free opportunity to cheat.

deadarrow32 − I’m surprised getting caught doesn’t invalidate the score of whatever you cheat on. That’s what most 2 strike rules are like now.

These commenters used the thread to share stories about creative test-taking and outdated academic rules

Jiffpants − My students were offered a one-sided study sheet during their exam (summer school, we move fast).

A student showed up with red-blue 3d glasses and a beautiful one-sided sheet written all over with red in one direction

and the corresponding blue in the other direction. Was impressed. Let her use it.

Made a new rule thereafter, but told future students about her legacy and how I appreciate cleverness. No one has come close since! Lol

mark503 − I had a teacher in college who always put in 5 true/false questions on tests. She always gave us one true answer as correct.

She said it was both answers, so we were technically right one time and one time only.

Adalaide78 − One of the things that still baffles me about college and other adult education is that

we're expected to continue with the childish rote memorization. Life is open book.

If we don't know something, we can just look it up, which is easier now than it's ever been before.

I get needing to have a basic understanding, but temporary memorization of every last detail isn't really helpful.

Also, many of my math teachers were fond of the "no one carries a calculator around in their pocket" saying.

Wonder what BS they're spouting to students now for a reason not to use calculators in class.

Sometimes, the most enduring stories aren’t about perfect grades; they’re about perfect timing, audacity, and wit. Dad’s little stunt is a reminder that rules are only as intimidating as the people enforcing them and a well-timed shout can turn absurd regulations into legendary moments.

Would you have done the same if faced with a “free cheat” rule? Or would you have just silently sweated through the exam? In this dad’s case, the answer was loud, confident, and unforgettable.
