A Cousin Tries to Hijack Wedding with Proposal – Gets Kicked Out Instead

A wedding should be about the couple, even if it takes place over Zoom. But in one family, a cousin nearly hijacked the spotlight with a proposal attempt.

The brother hosting his sister’s scaled-down ceremony wasn’t about to let that happen. When he spotted his cousin flashing a small ring box mid-call, he made a split-second decision, booting him from the guest list entirely.

The fallout came quickly. Furious texts from relatives accused him of ruining a surprise and embarrassing the cousin in front of the family.

Now, the question lingers: was he the protective hero his sister needed, or the villain who went too far?

A Cousin Tries to Hijack Wedding with Proposal - Gets Kicked Out Instead

A Zoom wedding took a wild turn when a cousin tried to steal the spotlight. Here’s the brother’s story:

'AITA for kicking my cousin off of my sister’s wedding Zoom call?'

My [27M] older sister [30F] and her fiancé [31M] were planning for over a year for their wedding to be this month.

Obviously, they can’t have the wedding as planned, but they still would like to get married, so they decided on a “Zoom wedding

where all of the family/friends would just call in to watch the officiant, my sister, and her fiancé.

My sister didn’t want to be in charge of hosting the Zoom call because she thought it would stress her out, so she asked me to and I gladly accepted.

She and her fiancé decided to invite everyone they originally wanted to, and it was a very big list. When we were going over the list,

my sister mentioned to me that she wanted everyone else to be muted for the majority of the wedding as she was worried that others would talk over her and...

and quote “overshadow” them on their big day “that was already scaled down”.

However, her and her fiancé said that I should unmute everyone at one point so everyone could talk and have a nice time with each other.

Fast-forward to the day of the wedding, everyone is muted during the ceremony which goes great, and so I then unmute everyone and ask to please raise a hand if...

My cousin (around my age) starts waving his hand crazily, and he’s with his longtime girlfriend (also similar age I guess). He’s a very gregarious guy, so I was not...

Then, he says stuff like “(my sister) and (her husband) are such an inspiration, it’s given me the courage to do this” then turns to his girlfriend and pulls out...

I immediately saw this as him trying to steal the spotlight (something that he’s done since we were kids, ex: he would secretly mess up my sister and I’s drawings...

Then I quickly announced that my cousin had technical difficulties and would not be joining again. Everyone else accepted this and went about talking, and my sister and her husband...

The rest of the wedding went smoothly, except for the fact that my cousin kept texting me angrily saying that he finally wanted to propose as a surprise with family...

The bride had planned a simple virtual wedding, with her brother acting as Zoom host to keep everything running smoothly.

Guests were muted, cameras were spotlighted, and the focus stayed on the couple, at least until one cousin decided the event was also his moment.

As vows wrapped up and toasts began, the cousin leaned into his camera, holding up a small velvet box. His intentions were clear. Before anyone could react, the host booted him from the call.

The cousin didn’t take it well. Messages from his parents poured in, accusing the host of being rude and “stealing” their son’s big moment.

To them, it had been a surprise proposal, one meant to celebrate love alongside the wedding. To the host, it was nothing more than a shameless attempt to steal his sister’s thunder.

The cousin had a reputation for pulling stunts at family gatherings, making the timing seem more calculated than spontaneous.

By cutting the call, the brother believed he was protecting the bride’s one special day from being overshadowed. Still, his decision left the family split between admiration and outrage.

Expert Opinion

According to wedding etiquette experts, the host’s instincts were spot on. Wedding planner Elaine Swann explains:

“Proposals at someone else’s wedding are a major faux pas unless explicitly approved by the couple” (Brides.com).

In other words, a wedding is not the place for surprise engagements, especially when the couple made clear they wanted an intimate, uninterrupted celebration.

Research backs up the couple’s concerns. A 2023 survey by The Knot found that 65% of couples worry about guests stealing attention at their events, and proposals often top the list of “spotlight theft.”

By acting quickly, the brother upheld both etiquette and his sister’s wishes.

Still, family fallout can’t be ignored. Experts recommend clear communication, explaining that the decision was about respect, not malice and suggesting the cousin choose a new time to propose.

Mediation, whether formal or casual, could also help smooth tensions and prevent long-term rifts.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Many users didn’t hold back in the comments, making it crystal clear whose side they were on:

drseussgrandchild − NTA! !! THANK GOD YOU DID THAT! Your cousin has issues, who would propose at another persons wedding?

That’s the definition of overshadowing that your sis didn’t want. If I were your sister, I wouldn’t even know how to thank you.

[Reddit User] − Nta Good on you for looking out for your sister. Your cousin is an attention*ore that deserved to be kicked out.

So INAPPROPRIATE to take away from your sisters big day, ESPCIALLY since it's already small since a pandemic. Despicable. Your cousin needs to grow up.

Others chimed in with the same verdict, praising the quick thinking and calling out how inappropriate the cousin’s stunt really was:

poodle_kitten − NTA. That was probably the best unintended outcome of the wedding being virtual! Imagine if it had been in person, you’d have had to tackle his dumb ass,...

Good for you! ! I’m sure it’s annoying that you have to deal with his texts and those of his obviously biased parents.

But just be thankful that you’re not posting on here “aita for not stopping my cousin’s proposal at my sister’s wedding? ”

tallclaimswizard − NTA People who propose, make baby announcements, wear white dresses, or do other things that pull focus from the wedding couple are assholes.

unsurehowtoreddit − NTA. It wasn’t his moment. You made a judgment call as moderator. I personally think you made the right one.

loxpoxmox − NTA - I love the swift action to protect your sister’s moment. Well played! !

And the chorus of support kept rolling in, with commenters applauding the OP for shutting down the cousin’s sabotage attempt:

Whycantooooo − NTA He was trying to upstage your sister on her wedding day, and she made it clear she didn’t want anyone overshadowing/usstaging her on her special day.

[Reddit User] − NTA. Your cousin knew what he was doing and you did what you had to to make sure that you kept your promise to your sister.

[Reddit User] − You are a saint! What a clutch move, “Someone is about to propose mid ceremony? NOT ON MY WATCH! ” Obviously NTA

[Reddit User] − NTA and you’re the real MVP for blocking his attempt at sabotaging their wedding. He sounds like a tool.

Was the brother’s boot a clutch move, or did he overstep? Let’s hear your thoughts.

This Zoom wedding saga shows how even virtual ceremonies aren’t safe from drama. The brother’s quick decision kept the day centered on his sister, but it also sparked a wave of resentment from relatives who wanted to see a proposal.

In the end, it’s a story of loyalty colliding with ego and a reminder that weddings, whether in ballrooms or on screens, belong to the couple.

What do you think, did the brother act as the ultimate guardian of the day, or did he overstep by cutting the cousin mid-call?
