Dad Puts Kids’ Basketball Hoop Outside Neighbor’s House, Then Asks “Where?” When Told to Move It

Living in a neighborhood full of children naturally comes with some extra noise, and I think most people expect to hear games and laughter from time to time. Things become much harder to shrug off, though, when those activities repeatedly spill onto your driveway, porch, car, and even the space directly outside your home.

One California resident had already been struggling with neighborhood kids playing around their property for hours when Christmas brought an unexpected addition: a brand-new basketball hoop placed directly in front of their house. The constant dribbling and shouting quickly became impossible to drown out, so the OP finally asked one of the parents to move it.

His response did little to improve the situation, and what happened afterward made the placement seem considerably less innocent. With HOA rules and a fire lane potentially involved, the resident decided it was time to investigate. Scroll down to see how this neighborhood dispute escalated.

not the actual photo

'i live in a court full of kids, they just got a basketball hoop for christmas and put it in front of my house'

we live at the end of a court with five other houses and all of them have kids except for us.

they play in front of our house, in our driveway, and on our porch for hours loud as hell with no parents around.

they've hit my upstairs window and car with kickballs. we play rain sounds and the TV loud to try to drown it out but it's always 3-7 o'clock

(guys these aren't the only times of day they're out lol, just these times consistently everyday plus some mornings or all day)

so we can't really relax after work with the noise. we've never said anything except when they're on our porch.

today's the day after christmas, and they put a basketball hoop in front of our house, not their own house.

our court is lined with a red curb/fire lane, and i'm wondering if that matters in it being allowed to be there.

but it's been incessant dribbling and yelling allll day. the rain sounds don't drown it out.

we are already looking for places to move bc of the issues with them, but i can't live with this escalated noise it's already giving me a headache.

we live in an HOA in CA and i'm not sure what the rules are since i'm not the homeowner, the person i live with owns the home.

edit: i asked the dad to move it and he said "where?" lol, like obviously in front of your house?

so when you bought it, you thought the spot it should go was in front of my house, not yours?? i just said not in front of our house.

i needed to leave soon after and of course he moved it to the very middle of the court blocking my way out....

2nd edit: at 6 am i looked out my kitchen window to the hoop back in front of my house with no one out there, it wasn't there last night.

it's 9 o'clock, still no one's out there playing and it's been raining all morning. what's the point of putting it there other than to be a petty jerk?

we're sending an email to the HOA with pictures today since we checked the rules and it can only be placed in a driveway,

not on the street or sidewalk. to the ppl who understand, thx for the advice and support

Everyone deserves to feel some sense of peace in their own home. Noise is part of living near other people, especially families with children, but there is a point where ordinary neighborhood activity starts to feel like someone else’s lifestyle has taken over your personal space. That difference matters because irritation can slowly turn into resentment when the same boundary keeps getting ignored.

In this situation, the OP was not simply upset that children were playing outside. The deeper frustration came from repeated intrusion: kids using the driveway and porch, balls hitting the car and window, hours of daily noise, and then a basketball hoop being placed directly in front of the house.

The OP had already tolerated a lot without confrontation. What changed was the feeling that their home had effectively become the default recreation area for everyone else.

A different perspective is that the father may have viewed the court as communal space and assumed the location of the hoop was flexible. Families with children sometimes normalize noise and play because it is part of their daily life.

Someone without children may experience the same environment very differently. Neither side has to be malicious for conflict to arise. However, once the OP directly asked for the hoop to be moved and it later appeared back in the same place, the issue shifted from misunderstanding toward disregard.

Psychologists often explain that repeated low-level stressors can have a surprisingly strong effect on well-being. Research on environmental stress shows that persistent noise can increase irritation, reduce the sense of control people feel in their surroundings, and make it harder to relax at home.

The American Psychological Association has discussed how chronic environmental stress can affect mood, concentration, and emotional regulation when people feel unable to escape it.

That framework helps explain why the basketball hoop became such a big deal. It was not only about dribbling sounds. It represented another example of the OP feeling powerless over the space immediately outside their home.

Once someone starts anticipating the next disturbance, even normal sounds can feel amplified because the nervous system is already expecting irritation.

The HOA route therefore seems reasonable, especially because the OP later checked the rules and found that basketball hoops were supposed to remain in driveways rather than streets or sidewalks.

Instead of turning the dispute into a personal feud, documenting the placement and asking the association to enforce the existing rule keeps the focus on the behavior rather than the family.

The most useful boundary here is simple: children can play, but one household should not have to surrender its driveway, porch, quiet, and frontage to make that possible. Shared neighborhoods work best when everyone enjoys the space without quietly assigning the inconvenience to the same person every day.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters agreed the parents should be told firmly to move the hoop and keep the children off private property

[Reddit User] − First They cannot and should not be playing on your porch or yard.

The basketball hoop should be moved to the owner of the hoops house. Backbone time.

Go to the owner of the basket hoops home and demand, yes demand it be moved immediately.

Inform the parents their children may not play on your property or in your porch EVER.

VenusSmurf − 1. Talk to the parents. Tell them that the kids need to stop playing in your yard,

and since the balls are constantly hitting your car, the hoop needs to move away from your house. Be calm and polite but firm.

2. If/when they don't take action or react positively, then see if the hoop's placement is against HOA rules

or the fire code and report them to the appropriate office.

Don't touch the hoop yourself. The neighbors will know it was you. Always stay calm and polite in any interactions. I'd also get a camera.

Perky214 − Why not use your words and ask the parents who are the owners of the hoop to have it at their house?

It’s not okay for their kids to damage your home with their toys.

You should have spoken to the parents the FIRST TIME Ask the HOA about the rules for these toys

If the parents are jerks, park your cars on the street (if allowed by your HOA)

XSC − Jesus that edit makes my blood boil. You need to nail this now before they think they can just do whatever they want in your property.

They really can’t use their driveway?

These Redditors recommended checking HOA rules, liability concerns, or local regulations before taking further action

Mykona-1967 − If you live in an HOA this hoop can result in fines for you since it’s in front of your home.

Usually the hoop has to be put up every night and be out of sight when not in use. Having it in front of your home is a violation waiting...

The owner of the hoop needs to put it in front of their home or in their driveway and follow the HOA rules pertaining to hoops.

Lopsided-Beach-1831 − Tell your landlords, their homeowners insurance isnt going to like the liability…

This commenter suggested involving the fire department if the hoop creates a potential access or safety issue

ohmyback1 − Drop by your nearest fire house. Talk to them about fire code. Ask about the red painted curb, the hoop being there.

Now the hoop in the center of the road.

Maybe it's time fir fire hydrant checks in the neighborhood and a little talk with owners of the hoop from the fire dept.

Thee owner can put it on his roof, in his back yard, in his t. v. room, up his b__t. Anything but in front of your house

These commenters joked about removing or relocating the basketball hoop after repeated problems

Old-Hovercraft7261 − Wouldn’t it be terrible if the hoop mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the night.

Just, like, it was there - and then it wasn’t….

Subject-Recover-9542 − I had a neighbor do that. Instead of their driveway on the cul de sac, played in front of mine.

I moved a huge antthill of fire ants with a shovel where the ball would continually bounce. Kid moved the hoop soon after.

Was contacting the HOA the right next move, or should she have tried another conversation first? And where should a shared court draw the line between kids being kids and neighbors losing reasonable use of their own space?
