Daughter Refuses To Dog-Sit After Parents Lock Her Out Of Every Bathroom

Leaving home is supposed to bring a sense of independence, but one woman discovered that family boundaries can become complicated even after moving out.

When her parents asked her to stay at their house and watch their dogs while they traveled, she agreed despite being sick. She expected a simple favor: feed the dogs, keep the house safe, and rest when she could.

Instead, she found herself locked out of most of the bathrooms in the house, unable to access basic supplies, and feeling deeply hurt by what seemed like a deliberate choice.

What should have been a normal weekend helping her family turned into a moment that made her question whether she was being treated like a trusted daughter or just a convenient person to call when they needed something.

A daughter is asked to pet-sit for her family but breaks down after discovering she has been locked out of nearly every bathroom

'AITA for refusing to watch my parents dogs after they locked me out of their bathrooms the last time?'

I (22 F) recently moved out of my parents home.

They (mom and dad and 2 younger siblings) all are out of town this weekend for my older brothers wedding

(I am not at the wedding because I could not afford air travel to it).

I was asked to house sit and watch their dogs. I am sick, and yesterday I arrived at the home to watch the dogs.

I needed cough syrup so I called my mom to ask where I could get some. She directed me to her bathroom. The door was locked.

She seemed surprised. I heard over the phone my dad asking why I needed to get into their bathroom.

I immediately got the sense my dad locked the bathroom without my mom knowing. I hung up, found cough syrup in the fridge.

I felt pretty awful about the door being locked (it felt bizaree and like psychological warfare) and just needed a hot shower.

I go to the guest bathroom. There is no soap or shower supplies in there. I go to my brothers bathroom to borrow some, it is locked too.

I basically break down into tears and find DOG shampoo to go take a shower and try to calm down.

I genuinely sobbed for an hour and then took cough syrup and went to sleep.

I told my aunt, she was infuriated at this treatment and she told me to not dog sit for them again.

They are going on a family a trip in december and I have been asked to house sit again.

AITA if I tell them no the next time they ask me to house sit given that this time they locked me out of 2/3 bsthrooms in the house

and the only one I had access to only had dog shampoo in it?

update: i found out tonight from family member the "december trip" I referenced is in fact taking place during christmas.

so I was going to be excluded not just from a family trip but a christmas family trip (bonus points for needing more therapy)

also, i genuinely havent unlocked the bathroom doors because 1) i have been sick still and just feeling like crap physically

2) everytime i go to do it I get just upset and angry at how humilitaing it is to be treated this way

by someone who is supposed to be your family. ive debated unlocking the doors to prove a point or leaving them locked to get my mind off it.

ill be revisiting many of your replies for encouragement that I am not crazy and that this treatment is in fact wild,

abusive, and indicative that im probably not well liked by my dad!

Sometimes the most painful moments are not dramatic arguments. They are the quiet moments that make someone wonder whether they are truly valued by the people closest to them.

For the OP, the locked bathrooms were not only about needing cough syrup or taking a shower. They became a symbol of feeling unwelcome inside the home where she grew up, especially while she was doing a favor for the same people who had restricted her access.

The emotional conflict in this situation comes from a clash between expectation and experience. The OP arrived while sick to care for her parents’ pets, likely expecting to be treated as family. Instead, she encountered locked doors, missing basic supplies, and a situation that left her feeling humiliated and isolated.

Whether the locks were intentional or caused by a misunderstanding, the emotional impact was real. She interpreted those details through a larger history of feeling excluded, which made the experience much more painful.

There is also an important perspective about family obligations. Many people assume that relatives should help each other automatically, especially with practical favors like pet sitting. However, family relationships still require mutual respect.

A request for help does not create an unlimited obligation, particularly when the person being asked feels unsupported or hurt by the arrangement.

Psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner, author of The Dance of Anger, explains that boundaries are essential in relationships because they allow people to protect their emotional well-being while remaining connected to others.

She emphasizes that setting a boundary is not the same as punishing someone; it is a way of communicating what someone can and cannot continue accepting in a relationship.

That framework helps explain why refusing future house-sitting requests may not be about revenge. The OP is not saying her parents can never ask for help again.

She is recognizing that agreeing to repeated favors while feeling hurt and disrespected may deepen resentment. A healthy relationship cannot be built only on one person providing support while ignoring their own emotional needs.

At the same time, the exact intention behind the locked doors remains unclear. It is possible there was a practical reason, a misunderstanding, or a deliberate choice. The most important issue is not proving someone’s motive from one incident but acknowledging that trust has been damaged and needs attention.

The larger lesson is that family ties do not remove the need for basic consideration. People can share DNA and still need to earn trust, kindness, and access to each other’s lives. Helping family can be meaningful, but it should come from love rather than fear, guilt, or the belief that saying no makes someone a bad person.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters criticized the family for not supporting OP financially or providing basic care despite asking for help

Quiet_Temperature843 − NTA. And If your parents can afford a house with 3 bathrooms, surely they can afford to fly you to your brothers wedding.

Who paid for your younger siblings flights?

Grouchy-Towel-3168 − I can’t believe they didn’t help pay for her airfare so she could go to her older brother’s wedding!

Ok_Tonight_3703 − NTA. This was truly sad to read. These people are your parents by the most basic definition.

You are only 22 and neither your parents or brother offered to pay for you to attend the wedding.

Your “father“ locked bathrooms to keep you out like you are stranger pet sitting and didn’t leave you basic hygiene supplies like soap and shampoo.

This is deplorable.

Shame on him. Listen to your aunt never per sit for them again take long break from your parents. Are your younger siblings boys? You deserve better.

Kingbus155 − I babysit for my daughter 3 days a week. Thursday nights I always spend the night to avoid 2 hrs of driving just to babysit the next day.

She keeps toiletries for me. I have a drawer in the spare bedroom where she washes my clothes after my shower and they are there for me the next time...

They also feed me dinner those 3 nights even if they order in. I could not imagine working for family and not having basic necessities.

These users questioned missing details, saying the situation seemed unusual and that more context might be needed

nekochiri − I feel like there’s a whole lot of story missing.

AlphaNautilusNarwal − There has to be more to this story. None of this makes sense for any kind of normal family.

LordCirceOfAeaea − From your post history, your family hates you, or at least your mom does.

And your dad is less-than-caring about your mother not liking you, since he allows it to continue.

Stop doing these people favors since you moved out. They do not have your best interests at heart.

Decent family would pay for you to attend the wedding of your own brother.

Unless you don’t care for your brother, but that’s not mentioned here.

Now that you’re on your own, you get to put yourself out there (safely) and find your own family of friends you love and trust and vise versa. Good luck...

These commenters focused on the locked bathrooms and lack of basic necessities, viewing those actions as disrespectful and humiliating

TheElvesOfXadia − Why did they lock you out of the bathrooms?

serdasus101 − Your no contact with your family was yesterday. They didn't pay for your flight.

They have no problem explaining others you not attending the wedding. They humiliated you by locking the bathrooms.

They asked you to watch the dog while you are sick and need to rest. And I am sure they didn't offer any compensation.

Please don't be a doormat to them anymore.

My sympathies for you. NTA

Relevant-Plankton297 − NTA. Don’t dogsit for them again

Was refusing future favors a reasonable boundary, or did the situation need a deeper conversation first? How would others handle feeling like a guest in their own family’s home? Share your thoughts below.
