Daycare Refuses Sunscreen For Black Children, Mom’s Review Exposes Shocking Policy

Most parents want to believe that the adults supervising their kids understand basic safety. Sunscreen, shade, and simple prevention should be obvious when children spend hours outdoors.

So when a mother discovered that her daughter was being denied something so basic, she felt a deep pull to get answers and make sure her child stayed safe.

What she found instead were excuses, dismissive comments, and a daycare staff insisting that their actions were appropriate. After yet another painful sunburn pushed her past her limit, she went public with a review that called out what she believed was harmful treatment.

Her honesty sparked conflict, accusations, and pressure to stay quiet. Scroll down to see how this debate grew beyond one bad experience and turned into a question about accountability and protection.

A mother calls out her child’s daycare for denying sunscreen to Black kids, sparking backlash

'AITA for writing a bad yelp review about my childs daycare calling them r__ist?'

A while ago my daughter [8f] was complaining about her daycare because they were not giving her sunscreen.

She asked for sunscreen but they said that black people do not need sunscreen but they actually do.

Before COVID they went on a field trip and they made all the black kids sit in the sun

and made the white kids sit in the shade because it would damage their skin or some bs.

I talked to the ladies at the daycare and they said that it was justified

but said if we brought in a doctors note they would give her sunscreen.

I made my daughter take it to school and let her share it with other kids

but then the teacher took it saying she was not allowed to do that without permission.

The other day she came home with a bad sunburn and her skin was peeling

and I had enough and wrote that they were r__ist and segregating kids and that she could get skin cancer

because they are forcing her in the sun without sunscreen.

I sent the lady in charge articles about cancer and that black people can get sunburned

and sent her names of the workers who enforced this.

She said that they were under her orders and that she was right because we have more protection against this

and said that I was blowing this out of proportion and asked me to take my review down.

I am seriously thinking of contacting a news channel about this.

My friend said I am being a karen for complaining publicly and that black people have melanin

so that gives them lots of protection that other kids don't have.

EDIT: We live in the deep south

UPDATE: I decided to ask my daughter how she feels about all of this

and she said that she likes going to daycare and that all of her friends are there.

I got a lot of nice replies and awards and I am very thankful for all of the support I have been getting.

I'm having my daughter come home from school with her grandma instead of the daycare.

I emailed the owner of the daycare franchise (not the manager)

and they are very furious and have decided to let go the people who were participating in this.

I am not going to report them yet unless they do this again and I am in a group chat with the parents

and I told them to all tell me if they do this to their kids again

and I am afraid that reporting the place could make a lot of the people who didn't know about this lose their jobs.

Turns out the manager and her friends were just power tripping.

I am not very confrontational and my husband also said reporting would not be a good idea

since if they close down other parents would lose childcare.

There is a unique kind of fear and frustration that surfaces when a parent realizes their child is being mistreated by the very adults responsible for their care.

In this case, the mother wasn’t reacting to a single sunburn, she was responding to an ongoing pattern of racially biased decisions that repeatedly harmed her daughter.

Each time her child asked for sunscreen and was denied, each time she was placed in the sun while white children were placed in shade, the message was clear: her comfort and safety didn’t matter.

And when the mother tried to advocate privately, she was dismissed. That cumulative harm is what pushed her to speak publicly.

Emotionally, this conflict centers on a parent fighting for her daughter’s dignity. The daycare’s behavior wasn’t simply negligent, it reinforced discriminatory beliefs that deeply affect children’s self-worth.

The daughter’s skin peeling wasn’t just a medical issue; it represented the physical consequences of adults clinging to racist myths. The mother’s frustration reflects something deeper than anger, it reflects the heartbreak of knowing her daughter was singled out because of her race.

A fresh perspective highlights how misinformation becomes discrimination. Some adults genuinely believe the myth that darker skin cannot burn, and because of that false belief, they justify unequal treatment. But intent does not erase impact.

A child forced into the sun while others sit in shade is not experiencing “misunderstanding”, she is experiencing segregation. From the parent’s viewpoint, calling this racism wasn’t extreme; it was accurate.

Medical and psychological experts fully support the mother’s concerns. The American Academy of Dermatology confirms that people with dark skin can burn and can develop skin cancer, and they explicitly warn against the myth that melanin provides full protection.

The CDC also states clearly that melanoma affects people of all skin tones and that lack of sun protection increases risk.

On the psychological side, Psychology Today explains that microaggressions, including stereotyping or unequal treatment based on race, create chronic stress, emotional harm, and lasting damage to a child’s sense of safety and identity.

Given this, the mother’s decision to post a public review wasn’t overreacting, it was self-advocacy after repeated attempts to address the problem privately failed. The daycare had multiple chances to correct their behavior and chose not to until outside pressure forced accountability.

So, protecting a child’s health and dignity is never excessive. When institutions refuse to listen, parents must speak louder, not quieter, to keep their children safe.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

This group agreed OP was NTA and said the daycare’s racist behavior absolutely deserved exposure

Iseewhatudidthurrrrr − Nta - they are idiots. If you sent them back up explaining why

and they took away your skin care products they can experience the consistencies of their own actions.

You tried to educate them and they refused to listen.

manifestingellewoods − NTA. they were r__ist, you called them out for it.

Primer2396 − NTA please go further than just news go to the cops this is not only r__ist but dangerous.

Contact the news then immediately contact the cops before the daycare can reach the cops themselves

These commenters urged OP to pull the child immediately and report the daycare for discriminatory and unsafe practices

Derbyshirelass40 − NTA you need to shout it from every rooftop you can find. In this day

and age people have no excuse for such blatant racism.

Any one of the staff members could have disregarded the owners words and put sunscreen on the kids

that didn’t have any but they all followed this racial abuse and should be called out on it.

ElfGrove − NTA. If you can, get your kid out of there.

Tell the local news, but more importantly, report the daycare for unsafe conditions

and discrimination to your local childcare licensing department

(If you're US-based childcare dot gov should help you find the local org) and BBB or equivalent.

pinebonsai − NTA, I'd pull my kid, tbh. Who knows what other f**ked up things they think they should tell the kids about race.

Also, I'm like 80% sure segregation of this form

(requiring them to sit in specific areas based on skin color, etc) is illegal?? But I'm not a lawyer.

This group emphasized involving licensing boards, lawyers, or CPS because the daycare’s actions risked children’s safety and violated civil rights

LunarHare82 − 1) Speak to a lawyer because this is considered n__lect, child endangerment,

and is also discriminatory against a protected class (race. )

2) Contact the state licensing board and file a complaint. Encourage the other parents to do the same.

3) Keep the review up.

xxdyskrasiaxx − NTA. Report this center now! I am a preschool teacher

and it is our responsibility to ensure ALL children are taken care of.

I don't know what state you live in but you need to make a report to the state about this.

irishkegprincess − These people are putting your child at risk for not understanding that anyone that has skin needs sunscreen.

They are ignorant and need to be educated. I would not take the post down

and would consider contacting cps on the daycare. They are literally putting children in danger. NTA

These users criticized the daycare’s ignorance and lack of professional standards, insisting OP escalate the issue publicly

ClaudiaTale − This is a horrible daycare. I live in California, where they have so many different kids

with so many different needs and they cater to all of them.

Besides your ACTUAL HEALTH CONCERNS FOR YOUR DAUGHTER! Absolutely NTA. I would call the news.

little_seamstress − NTA and not a Karen. Contact the news channel. These people should not be caring for any children.

Free_spirit1022 − Jesus NTA When I worked at a daycare I had the opposite problem,

having to convince a few black parents that their kids did in fact need sunscreen.

This is something early childhood educators learn in school.

This makes me think that the teachers and director at your school do not have their ECE certification.

This commenter said the daycare was clearly racist but also noted OP should stop sending their child there altogether

icebluefrost − ESH — This place is deeply r__ist. It doesn’t matter what facts you send,

they feel back children should be treated differently than white.

Mild YTA for continuing to send your daughter there knowing that.

What would you do if a daycare dismissed your concerns, lectured you about your own child’s skin, and doubled down on harmful practices? Drop your thoughts below.
