Key Takeaways:
- Denis Villeneuve will only make “Dune: Part Three” if the screenplay is excellent.
- The sequel could explore Paul Atreides’ rule and Chani’s role further.
- Villeneuve’s focus on quality is clear as he works to solve potential issues like the time gap between films.
Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has spoken about the potential next chapter in the Dune universe.
In a recent interview with Empire, Villeneuve revealed his uncertainty regarding Dune: Messiah, despite the open-ended conclusion of Dune: Part Two.
Villeneuve said, “I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me. I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after Part One. We were already designing, writing, et cetera.”
“But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it will be healthy to step back a little bit.”
While Villeneuve intends to focus on other projects for the time being, he remains dedicated to completing the saga with an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s second novel. However, the possibility of a third film remains uncertain.
He went on, “First, make sure that we have a strong screenplay. The thing I want to avoid is not having something ready. I never did it, and now I feel it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm.”
“We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper.” He also added, “If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant. If ever I do Dune Messiah, [it’s] because it’s going to be better than Part Two. Otherwise, I won’t do it.”
Part Two hints at a sequel as Chani leaves Paul, who fulfills his destiny as the Fremen messiah. His rise to Emperor and the start of the predicted jihad against the great houses pave the way for the next part of the “Dune” series.
Villeneuve’s dedication to solving potential problems
Dune: Part Three” is expected to be even more intense than the first two films. However, there’s a challenge with the timeline, as it’s set 12 years after the sequel. If Villeneuve wants to keep the original cast, they may need to portray older versions of their characters.
There are also concerns about whether they can easily step back into roles they haven’t played in years. Villeneuve seems dedicated to resolving these issues before confirming “Dune: Part Three.”
