The excitement is ramping up for the latest installment in the beloved Despicable Me series, with a fresh trailer and poster for Despicable Me 4 now going viral. This eagerly anticipated sequel, marking the franchise’s return after seven years, introduces the super-powered Mega Minions, promising another round of mischief and mayhem. Let’s take a look at the trailer below:
Despicable Me 4 picks up some narrative threads from its 2022 prequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, which nearly grossed $1 billion globally, securing its status as the highest-grossing animated franchise worldwide. The new chapter in the saga introduces Gru Jr., a lively newborn of Gru and Lucy’s family, who seems to have inherited his father’s villainous side.
In the trailer, Silas Ramsbottom’s Anti-Villain League Headquarters is flooded with the Minions army, who wreaks havoc and pulls pranks everywhere. Ramsbottom also plans to turn some of the Minions into Mega-Minions with super abilities, but things go awry pretty quickly, especially with the arrival of the new bad guys, Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara).
Amid these trials, Gru, Lucy, and their daughters—Margo, Edith, and Agnes—find themselves on the run, as they have to find a way to defeat the new antagonist duo while dealing with Gru Jr.’s antics against his dad at the same time.
Steve Carell shared insights into the continuation of Gru’s journey with Digital Spy, noting, “Gru and Lucy are married; they’re a family at this point. It’s the next step in their world with the Anti-Villain League and how their kids are included in the whole process. It’s the most logical next step in the continuation of their story as a family together.”
While the first trailer of Despicable Me 4 focuses mainly on Gru and his family, the second trailer gives the spotlight back to the Minions, the comedy-relief mascots of the franchise, and their usual hilarious antics. Fans worldwide love the Minions so much, that they even got a spinoff series of their own with two solo movies, telling the story of the little yellow army meeting with young Gru.
Despicable Me 4 is directed by Chris Renaud, known for The Secret Life of Pets, with a script penned by Mike White of The White Lotus fame and series regular Ken Daurio. Illumination’s founder, Chris Meledandri, produces alongside Brett Hoffman and Patrick Delage.
An earlier CinemaCon footage of Despicable Me 4 sees Gru operating a heist with his newborn son, Gru Jr., as they infiltrate a high school. They got into a ridiculous skirmish with the principal’s pet skunk, with Gru accidentally injecting himself with a dose of tranquilizer.
Set for release on July 3, 2024, Despicable Me 4 promises to deliver all the fun and trademark comedy of the 14-year-old franchise that fans have come to love.
