Future Grandma Calls Baby “Her Child,” Then Denies Everything When Confronted

by Leona Pham
August 17, 2026
in Social Issues

Pregnancy is supposed to be a time filled with excitement and happiness, but it can become overwhelming when someone else starts acting like they have ownership over the experience.

Setting boundaries with family can be difficult, especially when they refuse to accept that becoming a grandparent does not mean becoming a parent again.

The original poster (OP) was excited to finally share her pregnancy news, but her mother-in-law’s reaction quickly turned the moment into something uncomfortable.

Instead of respecting their wishes, MIL insisted she would be involved on her own terms and later denied making the comments that left OP and her husband shocked.

Read on to find out how OP handled this unexpected family conflict.

Pregnant woman faces anxiety when her MIL reacts strongly to boundaries around the upcoming baby

'MIL referred to our unborn baby as “her child” and said she’s “coming over whether we like it or not”?'

Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster, interested in shared experiences or advice.. A little backstory:

My husband and I have been friends since childhood/grew up together so I

know his mother fairly well. We have never been close, but used to be

friendly enough in middle/high school, but not since then. For the entire

time I’ve known her, she has been extremely religious, believing she is a

powerful witch. Both of his parents have been borderline neglectful/are

extreme narcissists. His mom initiated a very dramatic/ugly divorce as soon

as he turned ~18, that has created a lot of problems for both of his parents,

who have become increasingly emotional needy/reliant on my husband.

This includes frequent/late phone calls crying and sharing

intimate/inappropriate details of the marriage, lying about things

said/done (that we know did not happen), and both of them using

information he shares about his life to try and manipulate the other. Over

time some boundaries have been somewhat set but it’s been challenging

and it is obvious they still see him/me as children and don’t really respect

our wishes. Despite this, all has been well enough since husband and I

moved across the country for our careers. We have been busy in

school/later establishing careers and thankfully neither of his parents has

made a true effort to come visit more than a couple times for less than a

week, which is nbd. During this time, we have been in therapy/planning for

a family, and we finally felt ready this past spring. We lost our first baby

early (before telling anyone) and it was very upsetting. Following this, we

both agreed to wait to tell family, and wait extra to tell his family since we

knew they would likely have inappropriate/overwhelming reactions.

Well. Today was the day. And holy s__t, it was just so much worse than

anybody could have ever prepared me for. I am genuinely still in shock. I

knew his mom was in love with him and aggressive (as shown by her words

and actions during the divorce) but today was just beyond.

We told her and her first reaction was that “she already knew”, which was

already a weird thing to say. Then that she was disappointed to be finding

out so late (I’m 23 weeks). Then she announces that she has a trip planned

to visit our state conveniently during the baby’s due date, so she’ll “be

there”. Husband politely and calmly explained that we aren’t having any

family at the hospital or at home for the first few weeks, so she’d have to

come back later. I could feel her anger through the phone immediately. She

followed with, “oh. Well okay. I’ll just drop in really quick then”. My husband

again politely enforced our boundary and even wavered a little to placate

her, saying we could play it by ear. The rest of the call was uncomfortable,

as she kept making passive aggressive and n__ty comments about how “she

can’t believe we are making her wait to meet her baby” and she’s “shocked

we waited this long to tell her”. Whatever, I thought I could ignore the

comments. Then, she casually tried to mention visiting again. Once again

my husband enforced the boundary, at which point she raises her voice and

says, “okay, well once you finally allow me to visit, get ready because I’m

going to be by. I’m going to see my child. And I’ll visit often, whether you

like it or not. I’m going to be an active grandmother, not like your

grandmother (name). And don’t worry, I know how busy it gets, I’ll be here

when you need the help. And you’ll need help”. She laughed at the end as if

to play it off as a half-joke or something? But we were honestly speechless.

I don’t even remember how my husband finished the conversation because

I just felt sick to my stomach. The whole call felt so threatening and cold.

He is planning on talking to her tomorrow since this call happened late and

we were both too emotional to think rationally about how to handle this.

But I can’t help but feel just so bad. Angry that she thinks she can act this

way, sad that my husband has to deal with this/my kids can’t have a normal

grandmother, and hurt that someone would refer to my baby as their own

child.. Any advice, similar experiences, or just words of comfort welcome. 🥲🤍

UPDATE

Hi again everyone. This is unfortunately not the update I want to be

posting, but I’m at a loss at where to go from here. Check post history to read OG post.

After the comments made during that last phone call, husband and I felt

extremely uncomfortable with MIL. Neither of us expected that response

and were totally shocked, but we both felt addressing her comments was

important, especially the “my child” comment. My amazing partner spent

most of the following morning drafting a respectful but firm text message

and the response has floored both of us. The text essentially said:

‘Hi mom, I want to address your comments during our call last night. I

understand it was an exciting moment and you have a strong desire to

help, but wife and I have decided that we do not want any visitors for the

first few weeks, and our decisions are not up for debate. Your comment

about our baby being “your child” was not appropriate as well. You may not

show up uninvited to the hospital or our home, and you will be turned away

if you do. Our relationship with all family is invitation based and depends

on understanding and respect. Thank you for your support, and for understanding.”

Fine, right? Wrong. She immediately texts him saying “I never said that. Call

me” and proceeds to blow up his phone trying to call him. After several

unsuccessful rings, she finally leaves the most bizarre voicemail. For the

sake of privacy I am not posting it here, but it essentially is COMPLETE

DENIAL that any of this happened. She states she never said she would

show up, and was not disappointed, and did not push the boundary (all

factually false). She insisted this was “one big misunderstanding”. She said

that she was merely talking about how “hopeful” she is that she “will be

around her grandchildren often and be very active in their lives”. She made

several appeals to emotion and became clearly frustrated during the VM,

saying she just wants a relationship with husband and baby, and when she

was pregnant she “just wanted her mom there, so this is a shock”. At the

end of the voicemail, she essentially said “I wish you’d just call me to talk

about this, but you can forget me ever showing up on your doorstep

unannounced. I don’t do things like that.” She made zero mention of me

and did not even address the ‘my child’ comment at all.

My husband and I were floored by this response and immediately felt

beyond gaslit. We both sat there and talked about how we HEARD her

clearly say those things to us and have a cold, threatening demeanor that

left us both feeling like shit the day before. But it’s like she‘s pretending it

never happened. In response to this, my amazing husband drafted a brief message essentially saying:

“thank you for your message. I know clearly what I heard during our call

yesterday, and that language still makes me uncomfortable. There is no

misunderstanding. Please understand and respect the boundaries that

myself and wife have in place, and we can talk more about meeting baby during (insert life event ~a couple months).”

Well, her response was just another text saying that she never said those

things, and this is very upsetting for her. Both my husband and I are at a

total loss of how to address this. I personally feel extremely uncomfortable

around her and her language around our baby, and I think her ability to lie

so blatantly about a conversation we all had is scary. Husband has been

amazing at enforcing boundaries but feels as though we can correct any

overstepped boundaries as we go, and she may become more reasonable if she realizes LC/NC is on the table.

My concern is that she has already shown her character and intent, and

there are deeper issues not mentioned in this post in detail (religious

psychosis, jealousy and dislike of my family, previous extremely

manipulative behavior husband’s father) that make me extremely nervous

about this person being around my child. My husband is personally not

comfortable setting a true LC/NC boundary and is not comfortable not

TELLING her we are basically doing one of those. He feels as though we

need a “definitive reason” to go LC/NC, and this kind of language as well as

her religious beliefs and other behaviors are not reason enough.

As a separate note/emotional rant: I feel horrible. I have always been

excited to be a mom and be pregnant and now I feel like there’s this person

who is going to be breathing down our backs forever, who doesn’t view me

as a real person, let alone the mother of MY child. The fact that she has not

once spoken to me personally about the pregnancy, and has made no

effort to build any kind of relationship with me prior to this, but was

EXPECTING to be in the delivery room without my consent is hurtful. She

has also texted my husband recommending supplements to give me and

it’s starting to feel like I am not anything close to family, but rather just a

baby machine. I have always wanted a relationship with future in laws

before I even met my husband, but this just feels like a nightmare.

For all of the comments suggesting therapy: husband and I both attend

separate sessions, but will be meeting with a couples counselor to discuss

this. We both agree it’s us vs. the problem and we just want a decision that is best for our child and our marriage.

Sorry for the long post. Any advice or opinions are welcomed, please be kind.

A healthy family relationship is built on trust, respect, and the understanding that love does not give someone ownership over another person’s life.

For many new parents, one of the hardest moments is realizing that becoming a parent does not just create joy, but also reveals which people can respect boundaries and which people see those boundaries as personal rejection.

In this situation, OP was not simply dealing with an excited future grandmother.

She was navigating a long history of emotional pressure, blurred family roles, and a person who seemed to view her son’s pregnancy as an opportunity to reclaim a central role in her husband’s life.

The most upsetting part was not just the demand to visit. It was the underlying message: that MIL believed her desire to be involved mattered more than the parents’ decisions.

For OP, the comment about “seeing my child” crossed an emotional line because it suggested a lack of recognition that this baby belongs first to the parents.

A different perspective is that MIL’s behavior may come from fear, insecurity, or unresolved emotions rather than simply wanting to cause harm.

Some grandparents struggle when their adult children create a separate family because they experience independence as abandonment.

However, understanding the possible reason behind someone’s actions does not require accepting those actions.

A person can be excited, lonely, or eager to help while still behaving in a way that damages trust.

The important question is not whether MIL loves the baby.

It is whether she can love the baby while respecting the people responsible for that baby.

That explanation is especially relevant here. OP and her husband were not preventing MIL from ever meeting her grandchild.

They were setting a normal postpartum boundary: deciding when they would be ready for visitors after birth.

MIL’s reaction transformed a simple parenting choice into a conflict about loyalty and access.

The later denial of what was said also created another layer of difficulty because it shifted the conversation away from the original behavior and toward whether OP and her husband were “allowed” to feel hurt.

The strongest path forward may not be proving every detail of the conversation or convincing MIL that she was wrong.

Those arguments can become endless.

Instead, OP and her husband may need to focus on consistent expectations: visits happen when invited, parenting decisions belong to the parents, and respectful communication is required before deeper involvement can happen.

The most important thing OP already has is a partner who is beginning to recognize the problem and stand beside her.

Protecting their marriage and creating a calm environment for their child does not mean they are keeping family away.

It means they are building a family where love and respect exist together.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters urged OP to immediately correct MIL’s “my baby” language and reinforce that the child belongs to the parents

Smolduin − If she calls the baby "hers" again, tell her to go f__k herself

because it's your baby. Yours and your husband's. Do not be nice about it, snap at her. That's disgusting.

ReferenceOk7162 − “You’re not the mother. This is not your child. It is your

grandchild. Please reign your behavior in now, because it won’t be tolerated when our child is born. ”

Phoenix1294 − She needs to know the consequences of any potential

boundary stomping (preferably by text): "Mom, if you stop by uninvited

you'll be turned away and that will push back any previous planned visit by

two weeks (or whatever is comfortable for y'all). Also, nip the 'my baby' thing in the bud immediately and make her acknowledge it.

"Mom, it's not your baby, it's OP and my baby, understood? " Get her to

verbally say it and if she can't she needs to leave until she does. Remember,

y'all have all the power here she doesn't get to dictate s__t.

Condensed_Sarcasm − She sounds scary. Just remember that you've

already told her "no" and that's a complete sentence. You also don't have

to open the door if/when she shows up. You don't have to answer texts.

You don't have to answer the phone. This is YOUR baby. YOUR home. She's

not allowed to bully her way into things because "she's a grandma".

Make sure to tell your hospital that you want no visitors and if possible,

password protect your stuff if you think she's the type to try and illegally get access to your information or hospital room.

This group recommended practical security steps such as informing the hospital, changing locks, and installing cameras

Alternative-Dig-2066 − I’m thankful that as wonderful as my mother in law

seems over the phone and facetime, she lives in another country, and is

even more afraid of flying than I am. We have never met in person. There

are no grandchildren involved, she’s got enough from her other children. I wish you luck.

Tell your doctor/ midwife/ doula/ hospital that she’s not welcome at the

birth. Make sure she doesn’t have keys to your home. Get cameras. Be firm with your boundaries.

-tacostacostacos − Does she have a key? Change your locks, get cameras up

outside, don’t open the door to her if she hasn’t been expressly invited.

Holiday_Horse3100 − Tell her If she shows up uninvited she won’t be let in-

hospital room or home. Any visits will be limited to whatever you feel

comfortable with -whether 1 day or 5. Also the hours she can visit. She can

also stay at a hotel, which will limit the interaction. Make it difficult. Congrats on your new one!

These Redditors shared experiences with boundary-pushing MILs and advised consistently enforcing consequences

Maximum_Job3136 − My husband and I went through this a year ago. We

live 17 hours away from family. We stayed firm with our boundaries, my

husband handling the majority of the communication. My MIL made

comments like “no one will keep me away from my baby” constantly.

I always told her if she showed up uninvited, she would not be getting in

our house and would be escorted off the property by law enforcement.

She seemed to get the hint. FIL threw a fit because baby’s due date was

RIGHT before the busy season of his favorite hobby.

So if he didn’t get to visit once baby was born, he would have to wait until

the summer. We reiterated that prioritizing his hobby over meeting his

grandchild was his decision, not ours. They both pulled the classic “when

you need help…” line. We didn’t need help. My husband and I seriously knocked that newborn stage out of the f!

cking park and it drove them insane. Coincidentally, they came to visit for a

week about a month after baby was born. They were 0 help. I was their

host & maid the entire week while they held my baby and their dog s__t all over my house.

I’m now due with my second in April and will not be allowing them to my

house for “help” for longer than a month after baby is born. They seriously

made that week hell for me and I hold onto A LOT of resentment towards them for it.

thingmom − I have similar experiences and maybe a little advice. First, my

in-laws divorced over 20 years ago and they BOTH kept putting my

husband in the middle and it was tearing him up. So, I called both of them

separately and was a little manipulative and put the blame on the other

spouse about putting hubs in the middle of their divorce.

They got the message (surprisingly) and knocked it off. I don’t know if it

happened again now if that’s how I’d handle it but it worked. My MIL also

referred to my children as “her babies”. It REALLY bothered me so I started

calling her out on it, both online and in person. No, I’m married to YOUR baby. Those are MY babies.

And she stopped around me at least. But apparently she still said it in front

of DH so recently he put the stomp on her SO HARD for this. I was shocked

and super proud. Advice: call her out on the boundary stomping - coming

to visit whenever, “her baby”, whatever it is - EVERY time she does it.

When she does come to visit, remind her of the boundaries- no kissing, no

baby hogging, etc. and have a plan in place when she pushes those

boundaries because she will be like a toddler and will be testing how firm

your boundaries are. Your plan can be calling her out but also have a consequence.

Nope, you kissed the baby when you were told not to so you don’t get to

hold the baby the rest of the day. Be prepared for a MASSIVE toddler fit

when you enforce the consequence because she’ll try to manipulate things

to get her way but be strong and firm. Put a time limit on her visit. A definitive start and end time.

Be prepared to kick her out and her get a hotel for boundary stomping or

tell her no one is staying overnight right now and she gets a hotel from the

get go. If she stays with you, you be prepared to take the baby and leave if

you need to, go to a hotel, friends house whatever just protect your peace.

This first visit will establish how all the following visits go. If you hold tight

to your expectations she’ll likely hate that she’s not getting to be queen

bee in charge and visit less frequently. Ideally, this will all come from your

husband but he’s been programmed since birth to cater to her whims and give in to her to keep the peace.

So be prepared for you to be the bad guy and THAT’S OK. Because you’re

protecting your child and your household’s peace. Best of luck and hang tight. Congratulations on the little one!

walkonbi0207 − This is going to feel weird but be a broken record on the

topic. Warn her (and follow through) on hanging up on her if she

repeatedly asks. Say 2 asks, hangup after 2nd ask no saying bye or anything.

Statement of broken record being something like "we've discussed this and

will not discuss visitor plans again until xyz time" One major actual

discussion from your husband with her laying down the law that it is your

baby and her grandchild not "her" baby. Any mention of "her baby" gets 1

warning, 2nd time hung up on. Same for bringing up visiting.

Do yourself a favor and make her stay in a hotel when she visits. This ONE

discussion is where she can openly ask questions once and then anything

after this discussion is "you already know the answer, we're not talking

about this again", then a hangup after the second attempt of asking/ info/ demands

MIL’s reaction was not just excitement about becoming a grandmother, it became a fight over control.

OP and her husband tried to set a simple boundary around birth and postpartum recovery, but MIL responded with entitlement, then later denied the conversation happened.

That denial is what makes the situation especially difficult, because it shifts the focus from the original behavior to whether OP can trust her own experience.

Do you think OP’s concerns justify stronger boundaries before the baby arrives, or should they give MIL more time to adjust?

How would you handle a relative who ignores boundaries and then denies it? Share your thoughts below!
