Her MIL Kept Making “Jokes” at Her Expense, Until Her Husband Finally Started Seeing the Pattern

in Social Issues

For years, this woman wondered whether she was being too sensitive about her mother-in-law.

She is 32, her husband is 37, and they have been married for more than two years. But her MIL’s comments started shortly after they became engaged, and they have never really stopped.

The comments are rarely delivered as obvious insults.

That is part of what makes them so frustrating.

Her MIL usually says them with a smile, almost casually, and often in a way that makes it sound as though she is simply talking to herself rather than directly criticizing her daughter-in-law.

Her husband initially had an explanation for it.

He believed his mother and his wife simply had different communication styles.

His mother was passive. His wife was direct.

Maybe things were getting lost in translation.

After years of hearing the comments, however, his wife was starting to think there was nothing to misunderstand.

Her MIL Kept Making “Jokes” at Her Expense, Until Her Husband Finally Started Seeing the Pattern

'MIL has been saying rude s__t to me for years. Husband thinks it’s “communication differences”?'

I’m 32F, husband is 37M. We’ve been married for over 2 years now but MIL’s rude comments started pretty much right after we got engaged. Some examples of the s__t...

- I’m Korean and Japanese for context and am fluent in Korean but not at all in Japanese.

Husband and I were on zoom call with MIL (we don’t live close thank god) and I was saying how fluent Korean speakers can learn Japanese in just 6 months

(at conversational level) and maybe we’ll go live in Japan for a while so I can learn. She responded “well you’ll probably just forget it all anyways so why bother”

- we were on a family vacation once in a cold climate. I was telling my husband how cold I am and MIL kept insisting that I put more clothes...

I already had on four layers on so I said no thank you. She then responded “I don’t think she’s actually cold she just likes to complain”

- I invited my therapist our wedding. After the wedding MIL approached me and told me “some people” were wondering why my therapist was invited and “isn’t it a bit...

I actually had a very rough childhood but never had discussed it with MIL nor did I plan to so I just gave a pretty diplomatic answer,

something along the lines of “I have a very complicated relationship with my mom and my therapist helped me navigate through it all”.

To which MIL responded “well I’m sure your mom had good reasons for all the decisions she made”

- at the most recent husbands family reunion just a few months ago, MIL got literally 6 INCHES from my face and asked me if my eyelashes were real

(i was wearing mascara) to which I just kind of sputtered yes because of how close she was to my face.

She then told me “my Korean friend so and so told me that Asians can’t grow eyelashes so it’s really hard for me to believe those are real”

- she never fails to make remarks about how “nothing is good enough for OP”. It’s true that I’m very picky about what I eat, or my clothes, etc but...

These are some instances just to name a few. I could go on and on. What almost pisses me off more is that she always says these things with a...

And she actually never says them TO me, she kind of speaks to the room in a direction where no one is hanging out. Almost as if she’s talking to...

I know these comments are nothing compared to some of the stories I read here. And my husband is very…neutral?

about it all although he is starting to question some of the comments too. In the beginning he’d be like “I think my mom and you just communicate very differently”.

And that’s true, his mom is very passive whereas I’m very direct and I don’t mince words. But to me a lot of her comments don’t leave room for “misinterpretation”,...

They’re just outright rude. When I first started pointing these out my husband would be like “idk…”. But lately, I’ve been flipping the script and I’ll ask him if he...

He’s urged me to talk to her a few times but tbh I think she’s just going to claim that she doesn’t remember saying these things and nothing will come...

I also think the conversation should come from my husband where he needs to tell his mom to not be rude to his wife. Am I expecting too much?

She is actually coming to visit us soon and will be staying with us so maybe he will have a conversation with her then or maybe he won’t, idk.

I did plan a trip though so that I don’t have to be here with her (I work from home and my husband works in the office) and I could...

but I was like well you haven’t really done anything to defend me or correct her behavior and I can’t control your actions but I can control mine so I’m...

The Comments Were Getting Harder to Ignore

The woman is Korean and Japanese. She speaks Korean fluently but does not speak Japanese.

During one video call, she mentioned that fluent Korean speakers could potentially learn conversational Japanese fairly quickly. She and her husband even talked about possibly living in Japan for a while so she could learn.

Her MIL’s response?

“Well, you’ll probably just forget it all anyways, so why bother?”

Another time, the family was on vacation somewhere extremely cold.

She told her husband that she was freezing. She was already wearing four layers, but her MIL kept telling her to put on more clothes.

When she politely declined, her MIL smiled and said, “I don’t think she’s actually cold. She just likes to complain.”

Then came the wedding.

The woman had invited her therapist.

Her therapist had apparently played an important role in helping her deal with a difficult childhood and a complicated relationship with her own mother. She never expected her MIL to understand the details, nor did she particularly want to discuss them.

After the wedding, her MIL approached her and said that “some people” had apparently wondered why the therapist was invited.

Wasn’t that strange?

The woman gave a diplomatic explanation.

Her relationship with her mother was complicated, and her therapist had helped her navigate it.

Her MIL responded that she was sure the woman’s mother had “good reasons” for all the decisions she had made.

That one clearly hit differently.

Then Came the Eyelash Comment

At a family reunion a few months ago, her MIL got extremely close to her face and asked whether her eyelashes were real.

The woman was wearing mascara, so she was already confused by the question.

Then her MIL explained that a Korean friend had told her that Asians could not grow eyelashes, so she found it difficult to believe the woman’s were real.

Again, it was said almost casually.

And that was becoming the pattern.

Her MIL also regularly made comments about how “nothing is good enough” for her daughter-in-law.

The woman admits she can be picky about food, clothing, and other things.

But she could not understand why that gave her MIL the right to constantly comment on it.

What bothered her most was that these remarks were always wrapped in a smile.

There was no obvious confrontation to point to.

Just one little comment after another.

Her Husband Finally Started Hearing It Differently

At first, whenever she complained, her husband would shrug.

“I think my mom and you just communicate very differently.”

But his wife started changing the way she explained the problem.

Instead of simply asking him whether his mother’s comments were rude, she asked him to imagine her saying the exact same things to someone else.

Would he consider them harmless then?

Could he imagine his wife telling another family member that their goals were pointless, that they were pretending to be cold, that their therapist’s presence was strange, or making comments about their appearance?

Slowly, he began to understand.

He started questioning some of his mother’s comments himself.

Still, he wanted his wife to speak directly to his mother.

She did not think that was fair.

She believed her husband should be the one to tell his mother that treating his wife this way was unacceptable.

And now MIL was planning to visit.

She would be staying in their home.

Rather than spend the entire visit working from home while trying to avoid her, the woman made another plan.

She was going on a trip.

Her reasoning was simple.

She could not control whether her husband defended her, but she could control how much time she spent around someone who repeatedly made her uncomfortable.

Her husband was visibly disappointed by the decision.

But she felt she had already waited long enough.

Why “Communication Differences” Don’t Explain Everything

Different communication styles can absolutely create misunderstandings between family members. Someone who is very direct may interpret a passive person’s wording differently, and vice versa.

But communication style does not automatically make every comment harmless.

The important question is the pattern.

If someone repeatedly makes remarks that belittle another person’s choices, appearance, relationships, or personal experiences, the impact matters even if the speaker insists they were joking or misunderstood.

That is especially true when the behavior keeps happening after the person has made it clear that it bothers them.

In this case, the woman’s frustration was not based on one awkward sentence.

She described years of comments.

The issue was also becoming bigger than her MIL. Her husband’s response mattered because she wanted to know whether he would recognize the behavior and stand beside her when it happened.

Sometimes the hardest part of dealing with an unpleasant in-law is not the in-law’s behavior itself.

It is wondering whether your partner is willing to see it.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Several commenters encouraged her to take the trip and let her husband deal with his mother.

Massive_Ambassador_6 − Good for you OP. Take your trip. I would wait for her to come, speak and then leave. Let her and her son know that you would rather...

BoopityGoopity − Why is your husband protecting the r__ist and not you?

OGablogian − Husband cares more about his mother than about you.

Skankyho1 − they are definitely rude. she was also r__ist when she said that Koreans couldn’t grow their own eyelashes.

farsighted451 − "Is that meant to be an insult or a compliment? " "What a weird thing to say out loud. "

chooseausernameplse − His consequence for not putting his r__ist muther in her place is you will not be under the same roof with her. If this does not wake him...

Others suggested responding to the comments directly with phrases like, “Did you mean to say that out loud?” or simply asking why she would say something so strange.

Cherryboogers − You need an arsenal of come backs, things like, "wow, did you mean to say that out loud? "

Or "how embarrassing for you" when she says something to humiliate you. Your husband is also an i__ot.

He doesn't want to believe his mother is a rude and self centered person, so you must be the one that's not understanding her correctly.

I would let him know, he can handle his mother or you will be clapping back with the same rudeness and he probably won't like that.

Mick1187 − Call her out in the moment and make her explain herself. Make it uncomfortable. I guarantee she won’t forget then.

Special_Lychee_6847 − So, she's passive agressive, and you're direct. Perfect. If your husband doesn't det her straight, next time, you will.

Memorize different comebacks for the next time she messes up. 'Did you mean to say that out loud? ' ''What and odd thing to say. Why would you say that?

' (OP is so peculiar about things) 'Yes, MIL, I like things up to a certain standard, for myself. What's your problem with that, exactly? '

Novel_Ad1943 − Openly rude and 100% intentional or you wouldn’t be her singular target. My MIL used to do it constantly.

First of her kids to marry AND only son. It has to come from him, or she won’t stop. My DH avoided, then seemed shocked when my faith in him...

He got a blunt individual therapist (male, former military) who had me join 2x. He told him/us, “Loved ones sense a dynamic change as we hit milestones. Some test boundaries...

‘What’s my place? Am I more/most important? ’ Weddings traditionally function as our public declaration of, ‘This is my partner/person.

’ It’s why we celebrate it - to signal support of a healthy marriage. Now that question becomes, ‘Am I more important than your marriage? ’ Do you see where...

Healthy loved ones don’t come between us or ask it. Avoidance does not ignore or void the question, but it is an action - a refusal to answer and affirm...

” His direct, no-nonsense style finally broke through the infuriating avoidance. Nothing kills trust, intimacy or attraction like seeing our partner fold/hide repeatedly! I’m also a MIL - we know...

We either embrace and welcome because we want our kids to have a solid marriage/family or we do and say things we know will make someone feel ‘othered’ or like...

That’s what she’s doing OP and it’s not ok.

Final Thoughts

The woman may never get her MIL to admit that the comments were rude.

Maybe her MIL really would deny remembering them. Maybe she would insist they were jokes. Maybe she would claim everyone had misunderstood her.

But the daughter-in-law does not actually need her MIL to agree with her interpretation.

She needs her husband to recognize what is happening and decide how he wants to handle it.

Because after years of smiling through uncomfortable comments, she has reached a point where avoiding the problem feels easier than pretending it is not there.

Taking a trip may not solve the family dynamic.

But it does send a message.

If her husband wants her to feel comfortable around his mother, he cannot keep asking her to tolerate behavior he would never accept if the roles were reversed.

Was she right to take the trip, or should she finally confront her MIL directly and force the issue?
